NFT: Fantasy Football--HELP!!!!

Milton : 8/20/2017 6:46 pm
Okay, so I get a call from a buddy of mine last night saying he was invited to join a fantasy league with a $100 buy-in, but he doesn't want to do it unless I'm gonna help him. So I said sure, why not. I asked him for details on the league and he said he would find out and get back to me, but he needed to join by today if he wanted in.

So today he gets back to me and it turns out the league is holding its draft tomorrow online and it's a PPR auction league that includes IDP!

I'm completely unfamiliar with auction leagues and have no idea how they work. I understand the general concept (you have a budget and spend varying amounts for each player on your roster with the total not to exceed your budget), but I'm clueless on how the bidding works.

When I offered to help out my friend I assumed there was going to a draft, not an auction, and I assumed it would be two weeks from now, not tomorrow! Any advice from those who are familiar with the auction format (and IDP) would be much appreciated, thanks!

I started googling auction drafts
Milton : 8/20/2017 7:10 pm : link
So I now have an understanding of how they work, but any tips on how to maximize my bang for buck (i.e, how much is OBJ worth when you have a total budget of $500, how much is Aaron Rodgers worth, how much is Dave Johnson worth?) is appreciated.
Tackles and assisted tackles????
djm : 8/20/2017 7:40 pm : link
You better load up on linebackers and safetys. Then get more. Guys like JPP and Vernon and snacks have value too as they typically rack up the tackle numbers.

Other than that I am clueless with auction leagues
djm : 8/20/2017 7:41 pm : link
Sorry. Never did one of those before. Good luck.

Not spend anything more than $1-2 on idp.

You can waiver wire everything for Idp each week if you need.

Same strategy goes with auction as it does with regular draft. Spend on 1-2 elite players sit back and wait. I'd go after dj-bell-McCoy as your big play rb. Qb and te I'd sit back and wait on. Get your Winston and Zach ertz of the world in those positions.

Interesting, thanks.
Alright

So I re-read your entire post jeeze $500 that's a huge budget and a ton of idp starts. I'd save $50 of your budget for idp but mainly focus on on and safety like someone said. Landon Collins would be a great one to spend on your prized idp. Stay the course on your other positions as I mentioned earlier. Just google $200 budget auction league and x 2.5 on all their current projected auction price.

Hunt of Kansas City
Kupp of rams I absolutely love as my under the radar players.
I'm hoping to get Christian McCaffrey cheap
Milton : 8/20/2017 8:28 pm : link
He's my semi-sleeper. I think Eli and Marshall will be undervalued, so hoping to get them at a bargain price as well. And I'm tempted to bid aggressively on OBJ. He is one of only a handful of players worth getting into a bidding war over.

Eli will definitely be cheap. In a $200 auction you'd probably get him for ~$5.

Don't think McCaffrey will be "cheap" though.
Yeah
Eli owns all : 8/20/2017 8:33 pm : link
bell and dj
Brown Julio Beckham those are the 5 I'd pay whatever you need to grab one of them.

Doug Baldwin is just fantasy gold and gets no love. I'd be perfectly fine if he was my number one wr if you want to go two stud rbs

Thanks! The league has been around for four years, so I'm looking to see if I can find a history of it that will give me an idea of how much each player has gone for in the past. That'll give me an idea on who the competition overvalues and undervalues. I'm conservative by nature, but I don't want to be so conservative that I'm left with a ton of money left in my budget and only $1 value players still available.

p.s.--I'm curious how the waiver wire works, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it....
Or not - ( New Window )
here you go ...
annexOPR : 8/21/2017 1:20 pm : link
1. when your turn, nominate players you want nothing to do with - let others spend their money on guys you don't want

2. IDP - wait, any decent LB will do

3. wait on QB ... as long as possible. there's 10-15 guys i wouldn't mind starting, let others decide for you whlle you get yours at a discount

4. get 2 top 10 WRs and load up on RBs that also have handcuffs (buy low on martin/quizz rodgers combo)
since it's PPR
annexOPR : 8/21/2017 1:22 pm : link
your flex will most likely be a WR ... invest a huge portion of your budget on at least 2 studs
Disaster!!!
Milton : 8/22/2017 6:23 pm : link
Everyone's got a plan until you get punched in the mouth and that's what happened to me. I just wasn't prepared for the prices that the top tier players were going for, especially after this one "crazy like a fox" guy spent $110, $100, and $183 of his $500 budget on Bell, Jones, and Johnson respectively. It made bidding on the remaining studs all the more competitive for the 11 other teams in the league and drove up the prices beyond what I was prepared for.

My biggest regret was letting OBJ go for $85 without putting up more of a fight, but he probably would've gone for $100 if I had duked it out with guy who got him. But losing out on OBJ put me on tilt the rest of the way, because how could I justify paying $80-$100 for lesser prospects if I wouldn't pay it for OBJ. And with each bidding war I got into, the problem got worse and worse, because I wasn't the only desperate for top tier talent.

So this is the lineup I would up with....
QB: Luck, Roethlisberger, Eli
RB: Doug Martin, T. Coleman, K. Hunt
WR: Landry, T. Hill, B. Marshall, M. Bryant, Diggs, Kupp
TE: Olson, Reed
PK: Bailey
DL: Bosa, Vernon, Donald
LB: Wagner, Ogletree
DB: Collins, Jenkins

Jenkins was an accident and I already put in a waiver claim for Jamal Adams or Karl Joseph (which of the two should I prioritze?). I grabbed both Olson and Reed hoping to trade one for RB help and made a trade offer for Bell which will probably be rejected, but his top QB is Bortles and his TE is Fiedorowicz.

Ouch, while Martin is suspended your RB's are dogshit.

I like Tyreek Hill as a WR2, but not Landry as a WR1 unless it's ppr but Landry provides almost nothing in the TD dept, (so far).

It is PPR, but I'm not a big fan of Landry and I like Martin even less. It just reached a point where I had to get someone and everyone I was bidding on went beyond what I felt they deserved. But deserve's got nothing to do with it. Darren McFadden and Rex Burkhead are two RB's still available on the waiver wire, but I'm not sure which WR to give up. Whoever I give up is going to be worth more than the RB that replaced him.
p.s.--I didn't even know Martin was suspended. I was asked to participate only a day before the auction and wasn't prepared.
Do you start two QB's?
pjcas18 : 8/22/2017 6:47 pm : link
if not, drop Eli and pick up McFadden, and drop Kupp or Hunt and get Burkhead.

Not bad advice. I'll probably drop Kupp over Hunt, because the KC RB always seems to post big numbers no matter who it is and if Ware goes down, Hunt could become a RB1 overnight.

Yeah, I definitely like Hunt long-term, but your situation is while Martin is suspended you only have two backup RB's.

and in case you also didn't know Andrew Luck is in jeopardy of starting the season on PUP, no time table yet, I'd be fine with Ben at QB, but he is sort of injury prone.

Like I said: disaster! I knew they were taking it slow with Luck, but I figured they were just being extra cautious. I went into the auction with my favorites in mind and didn't do a lot of homework on others. And then my favorites flew off the board before I realized the damage that had been done.

I'm really curious to see where he goes in my keeper league. I imagine he'll go no later than 2nd but maybe even 1st, which happens to a player of his potential when 36 other players have already been accounted for by being kept.

I just offered Jordan Reed for McCaffrey. My other TE is Olson and his only TE is Cook.

Interesting. I might be irrationally optimistic about McCaffrey, but if I owned him I would not accept that trade.

Hell, I'm halfway considering not keeping Freeman so I have a mere chance at taking McCaffrey instead. I only have one more year left of Freeman, and I have a not-so-great gut feeling about him this year for no logical reason.
with a $500 budget
giants#1 : 8/23/2017 1:37 pm : link
I'm surprised the top players only went for ~$110 and Beckham at $85 is a steal (though I've never done an auction with IDP). For standard scoring leagues, the top RBs/WRs often go for 25-30% of the budget which would be in the $125-150 range for a $500 budget.

I'm still kicking myself that I allowed OBJ to go for so cheap. If I had it to do all over again, I would approach the whole thing very differently. I'd spend $400 on a QB, RB, and WR, and fill out the rest of the roster with pocket change.
