Davis Webb

mack809f : 8/20/2017 8:21 pm
When Webb came into the Pittsburgh game, his graphic pfofile came on the screen. The first line, in all caps, read IDEAL SIZE AND ARM STRENGTH. Thats sounds like he's worth more than a 4th TE or a FB. He threw the ball well when he set his feet, but whenever he had to move he wasn't accurate. It seemed like every play he was in the shotgun. So like alot of teams we have to keep 3 QBs this year, with Geno Smith as our backup. All reports I've read confirm what I've seen. He has a big upside, but needs alot of workThe new limits on practice limits his snaps, so the half line opportunity time should benefit him more than any player. He's a coaches son and hard worker who's embracing the challenge. I'm excited about this pick.
I like him too but

I imagine

he was probably also nervous in his first NFL game, regardless of the fact it was preseason. I wish they had worked him more in training camp and I am curious to see how he fares in the next few preseason games. I am among the group that wishes the Giants would not keep three QBs but we will see if Geno's play gets better in the next few games to demonstrate that he could indeed be a decent back up to Eli.

I, too, think Webb will ultimate be a good QB but would like Eli to stick around a few more years.
No Doubt, Eli should be a Giant for life

But its nice to have a guy that we can be excited about taking over for our 36 year old Hall of Famer.

Neither is Eli for that matter.
Looked like an ELI clone

in his first appearance. Knew the game plan did not panic. Moved well in the pocket surveyed the whole field and showed a good accurate arm. So far so good, we will see.

Because he's bulky and wears #5 with a big arm he made me think more of Kerry Collins then Eli

Phil wasn't bad at all, until the Jets tore up his knee in a 1982 preseason game.

I agree, but I suspect Eli will finish his career in New Orleans. Brees retires, Eli goes "home" to groom the Saints' successor, having already groomed the Giants' successor.

I realize New Orleans isn't really home for Eli anymore; he's settled in the Greater New York area. (New Jersey, the Hamptons). But it's where he grew up. He'd be hailed, second-generation Manning under center. It'd be a good football move, because he sets a great example for a team and a young QB, and a good PR move for the Saints, if they ever do it.
Brees might very well outlast Eli.
Devon : 8/21/2017 2:19 am : link
There's only two years difference between them and Brees is still playing at the higher level of the two, with stated desire to continue playing for as long as he possibly can (45 is his pipe dream).

If Washington doesn't work things out with Cousins long term, that's the spot I could him going, as a stop gap for them, especially given how he'd have been cut by the Giants at that point and it won't likely have been all that amicable.

Eli in washington, Eil in New Orleans,
and all because of the pressure to play a fourth round pick , who , as of this writing at least, has shown little.

My impression of Webb is that he might be an anachronism.
tall, strong arm, immobile, prototype pocket passer ten years ago and maybe a problem in the 3 steps and out, and throwing on the run.
Time will tell with Webb but for now Elis is as unlikely to go to Wash. as Trump and Hillary having a sexual relationship,

And Webb was a third round pick.
The idea that..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/21/2017 8:40 am : link
a pocket passer is an "anachronism" is false. Eli, Brady, Ben, Palmer, ryan, Flacco, Carr, Rivers and Brees are QB's who would rather stay in the pocket than run.

Outside of Russell Wilson and Rodgers - the past decade of SB winning QB's have been those traditional pocket guys.

But seeing anachronism used 5 times or so was fun....

Webb has shown more for the Giants than Cook has for Washington.

He was a 3rd round pick - with very underrated mobility (they ran read option at times with him in college)

He's not a statue in the pocket - watch last weeks game he evaded several sacks/pressures. He's by no means Cam Newton, but he's got some mobility to him.
Seriously I hope Webb is the next Simms
joeinpa : 8/21/2017 9:00 am : link
But we have no idea yet if he s God by to be any good. I agree it s exciting to have a young quarterback that could be the guy on the roster.

But Giants could draft another quarterback next year or the yer after that s the guy

Eli really has showed signs that he s nearing the end. He s always been inconsistent.

Give him a line let s see what he can do.
Let's not forget that..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/21/2017 9:03 am : link
as late as the 2015 preseason, there were some people here saying Nassib should push Eli as the starter.
Yeah, that is probably worth forgetting. Mostly because

As they should ... strength in numbers - more young QBs the better odds

Even the almighty Patriots have used quite a bit of resources on QBs - with Brady looking like he'll play into his 50s ...
There's several Nassib threads..

Nassib was impressive

KWALL2 : 8/25/2015 11:55 pm
I just finished watching the JAX game. Nassib did not workout well before the draft but doesn't he have excellent feet and movement? Doesn't move like a guy who ran a 5+ second 40.

In this JAX game he really impressed with his arm talent, footwork, and overall athletic ability. He can snap out nice throws especially on the move.

I don't care if it was against backups. That doesn't matter to me. He had several big time throws that a lot of starters can't make. Throws a very tight ball while moving. Snaps it out easy with power. He had several beauties to Jones. A few others while getting hit.

He looked outstanding to me. I liked him coming out of college. Really liked what he did in this game. I'm a fan of his game. He may never get a shot to play with the NYG but I'm confident he could do the job if we need him.

If, God forbid, Eli were hurt this year
SGMen : 8/26/2015 12:17 am : link
...I think we'd be in good hands.

If Eli doesn't get a long term extension and plays out the year, gets hurt for a portion and Nassib does REALLY WELL, well we have some decisions to make this off-season don't we?

Good to have solid QB's in this league. Hoping Nassib ends up being one
.
Or if Eli doesn't
giantgiantfan : 8/26/2015 12:43 am : link
get extended, but gets tagged next year. Nassib is a free agent after 2016.

He may not be fast in the 40 but he

Nassib and other impressions

ColHowPepper : 8/23/2015 12:21 pm
I'm going to start this thread with a reply to a post made by RetroJint on the Postgame discussion thread. There was some silliness there about Nassib, and less focus on him than I believe was warranted. Even though vs. the Jags' twos and threes I think Nassib was one of the positives that came out of last night. Then I go to some other impressions that probably mirror a lot of what others had or have to say.

First, he would easily be the starting quarterback on the other 2 New York state teams in the league.... Second he is using the extended handoff technique that guys like Steve DeBerg used ...It allows for a better play fake by showing the second level of the defense the run-option earlier, thus holding up the depth on their coverage drop. Third, as to the assine happy feet angle, those saved him maybe 8 sacks and he made plays downfield on at least 5 occasions that I can remember.

Nassib - Could not agree more. I was impressed by him last night, first time really. On the roll outs, planned or impromptu, he delivers the ball with authority and accuracy. He steps into the throw on the move, which is not easy, and this gives the ball excellent velocity, as well as accuracy. He is nimble and maintains excellent downfield vision. How many of those scrambles was he able to find the open receiver? Often, by my count. I thought Banks' comment that he scrambles to pass rather than run was apt.

On the play w/10:43 remaining in Q4, the 27 yard completion to Harris, Nassib stepped up into the collapsing pocket, I thought 100% certain the DT would nail him from behind, he was within a foot. Nassib got the ball out SO FAST even as the DT was about to wrap him up, and the accuracy was deadly. I have no idea what the posters in the post-game thread who want him traded or complain about the handoffs or talk about happy feet are seeing. Certainly a 180 from what I see. He looked a hell of a lot better than the inconsistent, tentative Eli last night (agree with Joey's comment). And, no, this is not an opinion that Eli should be benched, traded, whatever. He simply has been very ineffective so far.

Love reading the old threads, thanks! But really only

saw SGMen saying Nassib could compete with Eli...maybe.

And while a nice poster, he would compliment a piece of crap in a toilet bowl if a Giant was the one that took it...
Webb has a lot of tools to work with
JonC : 8/21/2017 10:15 am : link
first things he needs to establish are grasp of the playbook, and an upgrade of many of his mechanics.
Look forward to seeing Webb tonight for many reasons.
Jimmy Googs : 8/21/2017 10:27 am : link
Nothing scientific about it but in many cases (not all so keep your meathooks to a minimum) I judge a backup QB alot just on how he keeps his poise during a drive. Many guys with good mechanics, pedigrees and frames kind of lose control of the situation way too easily, and spend more time regressing than developing (ie., Nassib).

I like a guy that keeps his eyes down the field knows when to throw it out of bounds versus force it, and gets the ball into hands of his guys swiftly. Way too many backup QBs during the Eli-era have been guys that run around like chickens-with-their-heads cutoff than show poise.

Hoping Webb is different...
Geno Smith
mrvax : 8/21/2017 11:11 am : link
is a strong armed, fairly mobile QB. The only thing holding him back is poor decision making. If he can cut back on INTs he would become an excellent backup QB, IMO.

Gotta give Webb a year to learn the pro offense.

Eli Manning believes backup Ryan Nassib can be a starting quarterback.

"He's a hard worker, he's smart," Manning said of Nassib. "Just from watching him and how he prepares, how he makes plays in practice, his football mind and ability, there's no reason he can't be a starter." Nassib is entering the final year of his rookie deal and is unlikely to get that starting chance with the Giants. He's been the subject of trade rumors the past two offseasons. I suppose quite a few were mistaken about Nassib. I thought he had a solid 2015 pre-season.

I know it was just a small sample but I liked what I saw of him. Also I disagree regarding the comments around his mobility. Moved and ran better than I had hoped. Think commentators may have mentioned that to. Good strong accurate arm. We may have something in this guy unless our OLine get's him smashed.
