Goodell to sign extension through 2024

LCtheINTMachine : 8/21/2017 10:40 am
The NFL is close to re-signing Goodell. This is well deserved and I'd imagine they would increase his salary.
Goodell to sign extension through 2024 - ( New Window )
If he suspends Zeke for all 6 games he has my vote

!
He's made over 150M in 8 years
montanagiant : 8/21/2017 11:05 am : link
Made 44M in 2015. Nice gig for the pay
He does the dirty work
Matt in SGS : 8/21/2017 11:09 am : link
for Billionaires to make more money in a multi-billion dollar industry. His focus is to grow revenue, and deal with the legal ramifications and put the league above all else. For all the shit he gets (and in many cases warranted), he is doing what the ownership wants. The moment the NFL starts losing money, he's out.
For those who hate Goodell...
BigBlueinChicago : 8/21/2017 11:13 am : link
there are the 6 men who determine his compensation so he can get all that money.

John Mara - Giants
Arthur Blank - Falcons
Robert Kraft - Patriots
Bob McNair - Texans
Clark Hunt - Chiefs
Art Rooney II - Steelers

Everything you say is true. I still hate the man!
The worst

commissioner in sports, but as long as he keeps bringing in $, the owners aren't abandoning him.

Most commissioners..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/21/2017 11:50 am : link
are really in an unenviable position. About the only commissioner that people seemed to truly get behind was Rozelle.

I don't get the Goodell hate. Basically, I don't get much of what is thrown around regarding the commissioners. For the most part, they all are figureheads that serve the owners, yet fans treat them like they are the worst of the worst. I think ambivalence is the best term I can think of when it comes to my thoughts about these guys.
Coincidentally,

I couldn't care less who it is. The owners make the calls.
Commish's job
giants#1 : 8/21/2017 12:21 pm : link
1A. Grow revenue
1B. Keep as much revenue as possible for the owners

Everything else is secondary and Goodell has done very well at those two tasks:

- TNF has clearly increased revenue, which is why it's been expanded
- The London games clearly generate quite a bit as well as (again) evidenced by the expanded number of games
- Does anyone think the players union won the last CBA?
- Rams/Chargers moving to LA (from STL and SD) and the Raiders to Vegas also likely end up as revenue increasing moves.

re: the blurb in the OP/article about the deal being closer to completion earlier in the month compared to now...I wonder if Jones is ruffling some feathers in retaliation for the Zeke suspension.
Well I cant begrudge another man/woman their money
MetsAreBack : 8/21/2017 1:15 pm : link

and with NFL tickets for the most part still affordable relative to other sports (and with reg season games 10x as meaningful as baseball)... i wont lose sleep that this comes from owners pockets into his.

but no one can convince me the man is worth $30+ million. He's not a pioneer, a visionary, nor is he particularly irreplaceable. Most of NFL's growing popularity can be attributed to fantasy football, which had nothing to do with Goodell. Just strikes me as lazy on the owners part, maybe because there are so many of them they dont care that much. But that's their problem.

And as far as worst commissioners across sports - Bettman has that trophy won in a landslide. Its not close. Although I'm sure the owners love him since they havent had to raise their salary cap meaningfully since the lockout even as other sports revenues have skyrocketed.
Nothing against Goodell
WideRight : 8/21/2017 1:28 pm : link
I just want to be a fly on the wall of that compensation committee meeting.....

"Revenue up...lets give him 50M!"

"Yeah but Ray Rice... knock off 20...44M"

"Good job with deflategate, and the SB hlaftime show was flawless...60M"

"Hey guys, don't you think we can get some clown to do the same job for way less?"

"OK. Lets offer 44M and see if he accepts it"
"football in China and India gentlemen it's the future" Roger Goodell

Obviously D. Smith doesn't think so, since he is already
proclaiming there will be a work stoppage in 2021...
If they don't feel that some of Goodell's power, as it relates to handing out discipline has
decreased significantly...
well I wouldn't put it past the NFLPA to do so when
the CBA expires.
re: Goodell and discipline
giants#1 : 8/21/2017 4:28 pm : link
I think the owners would love for the NFLPA to bargain over Goodell having final say on disciplinary matters. They'd gladly give the NFLPA a win there in exchange for something else (18 game season?). The likely compromise would be an independent arbitrator that both the NFL and NFLPA agree to being the ultimate judge.

So it's a win-win for the NFL (as far as CBA negotiations go). They get something else in return and get rid of the 'black eyes' from shitty, inconsistent suspensions.
