NFT: NHL top 20 wings, top 20 centers and challenging Corsi

pjcas18 : 8/21/2017 1:40 pm
a couple interesting NHL.com lists as chosen by NHL Network "experts" (or not) and an article challenging Corsi as a good measure.

Top 20 Wings:
1. Kane, CHI
2. Kucherov, TB
3. Marchand, BOS??
4. Tarasenko, STL
5. Benn, DAL
6. Ovie, WAS
7. Pavelski, SJ
8. Laine, WIN
9. Panarin, CBJ
10. Gaudreau, CAL
11. Wheeler, WIN
12. Kessel, PIT
13. Pacioretty, MTL
14. Forsberg, NSH
15. Pastrnak, BOS
16. Atkinson, CBJ
17. Skinner, CAR
18. Simmonds, PHI
19. Oshie, WAS
20. Hall, NJD

I haven't looked for snubs or anything, but of the list I think Laine, Gaudreau, and Pastrnak should be higher. Marchand seems to have changed his game, but still too high IMO.

top 20 Centers:
1. McDavid, ECM
2. Crosby, PIT
3. Malkin, PIT
4. Matthews, BUF
5. Backstrom, WAS
6. Tavares, NYI
7. Stamkos, TB
8. Seguin, DAL
9. Getzlaf, ANA
10. Schiefle, WIN
11. Bergeron, BOS
12. Toews, CHI
13. Kopitar, LA
14. Eichel, BUF
15. Draisaitl, EDM
16. Johansen, NSH
17. Barkov, FL
18. Carter, LA
19. Kuznetsov, WAS
20. Monahan, CAL

I thought maybe Crosby got one more year before McDavid past him, but I have no issue with the top of the list. It just shows you (IMO) how shallow the 1C pool is in the NHL, some teams have two guys on here and a couple guys on here are nearing the end and on here as reputation guys and toward the end of the list some of those guys are really borderline 1C IMO.

the article on Corsi is linked below, but this stable summarizes below, the link between Corsi and success is a tough one to make. It's interesting as a metric and I think that's where it belongs, a metric.

Quote:
There are so many aspects of the game of hockey that Corsi ignores: the quality of the shooter, the angle of the shot, the distance, the precision, the speed of the action, to name just a few. These are aspects that everyone who plays the game and follows the game more than casually know innately.

the one player you put question marks next to is Marchand!!!!!!

Cmon, the guy has become an excellent winger. Even strength, PP, and on the kill.

rangers??
Agree on corsi

its just a metric.

But we should also remind ourselves that the #10 team in the league was 51%... the #24 team in the league was 48.6%. THATS NOT MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE. Its two extra scoring chances for one team spread over ~2 games. An extra 82 shots-for spread over an entire season. Shows you how much parity exists in this league. Seasons often come down to a couple of well-timed shots.

Seems like speed has replaced Corsi as a metric executives are looking more closely at these days. In large part because of Pittsburgh's success -> frankly I think their success is mostly to do with Crosby's greatness + a healthy Malkin the last two years + stealing Kessel from Toronto when oddly the whole league was convinced he was useless.
I don't usually put much

value in these type of lists, but I would put Tarasenko over just about everybody except Kane.
As usual

No Rangers. They fail at one basic need. The ability to draft even decent, they are horrendous and thus must get talent by trade or free agency, which is why they fail to win the prize.

Well I think Kessel is such a good fit in PIT because they don't need him to play on the 1st line, or even the 2nd line depending on their lines that game. He plays on the 3rd line a lot which helps with balancing the scoring, plus he's a PP guy.

but I agree it's mostly Crosby/Malkin.

When you can get two dynamic centers like them you will be competitive every year.

I think Marchand is a good player, but 2016 is really an outlier year for him as an elite scorer. He's always been an elite ahole, but elite scorer just happened, I'd like to see another year before I put him ahead of some of those guys. I'd have him in the 12 - 16 range. Definitely NOT 3rd best wing in the NHL.

Lias Anderson might be on the August 2019 version if he sticks this year in the NHL, if not, 2020.

I think the Rangers will have two players on the top 20 D which hasn't come out yet. McDonagh and Skjei should both make it. McDonagh definitely will, Skjei deserves it IMO too.

The disappointments for the Rangers have to be that Kreider isn't on a list like this, all the tools in the world. so frustrating as a player. Not too old to break out either.

Zuccarello too. Not a disappointment, but if they had an honorable mention section, I think Zucc and Nash could be on it.

anyway, I, like others, don't care about lists like this, the Rangers have more depth at forward than 90% of the league, they just don't have an elite scorer, and I don't think they need one for 2017-2018.

but Kreider certainly have that capability.

You can't teach super talent Leetch Messier.
