But I still have hope from Harvey. I think he's the most capable of turning it around next year. I have less faith in Matz than I do Harvey.
I have, to a lesser degree, have some hope in Wheeler as well.
Matz I think just doesn't know how to pitch. I think he can get better, but his stuff doesn't look great to me. He either needs to get strong enough to get that fastball up into the upper 90's, or he has to try something radically different, like learn a splitter. I think he needs to throw the four-seamer more and shit-can his sinker, which I think doesn't do much to get hitters out except to take off velocity.
All that to say, it's probably unrealistic he's going to do any of that, so he's likely to never be what we thought he could be.
and is still at in development stage as a pitcher.
If you thought he'd be as good as Degrom and Thor this year - that's on you. Personally, I had higher hopes for Lugo than i did for Matz THIS year... unfortunately both sucked and maybe we should have traded Lugo to the Cubs since they appear to have misjudged the market a little by seemingly overpaying relative to other teams.
they are saying he needed a "shot" (I'm assuming cortisone). Collins said he'd be shut down for a while and could pitch so I think they are bsing shutting him down for a bit with the "shot" excuse (I'm not saying he didn't have one but "Marc CarigVerified account @MarcCarig 45m45 minutes ago

Horrendous Becerra + Milone, Matt Reynolds, Tyler Pill. McGowan. Smoker still has good stuff but he's been so bad I doubt he's safe if they need a spot

Sources: Steven Matz has pitched through pain all season. Been diagnosed with similar nerve issue as deGrom last year. May need surgery.
Sources said Matz, from East Setauket, was skipping bullpen sessions to keep pitching through the pain, which the Mets permitted because tests showed that the leftys elbow was not damaged structurally. Publicly, Matz has insisted that he is healthy, and he kept pitching despite a checkered injury history that dates back to his earliest days in professional baseball.
Collins has made references to Matz dealing with adversity, and the pain has persisted, leading to an examination in which the nerve condition was diagnosed.
Once again, the Mets handle an injury in comical fashion. If the kid is hurt, he shouldn't keep pitching. They'll be lucky if they haven't already ruined him.
Can hold up over a full season anymore. I think we should really shift him to the pen. I think he could be very good there.
I think he could be an elite reliever if he was moved to the bullpen. I agree that he more than likely will never stay healthy if he remains in the rotation so they would be wise to move him to the bullpen next season.

Why do people assume arms can be saved by moving them to the pen? If anything asking a guy to throw 3-4 games a week and warm up more often than that is more taxing i would think.
Honestly, in the post PEDs world players get hurt too often - these bodies can't last 162 games. I really hope they expand rosters or institute the hockey version of daily "2-3 press box guys" - or just reduce the season workload (more off-days). But would imply players take less money so will never happen.
Which do you think has a greater effect on arm health? 60 innings a year or 200?
Yes, he has to learn to pitch on back to back days, ect. but assuming he's healthy it might be doable. I mean what do we have to lose? He's already proven he can not hold up over a full season as a SP.
"What is there to say at this point. The poor kid is COMPLETELY lost out there. He has that deer in the headlights look and seems to have lost all confidence. Where do we go from here with him. He was once a prized prospect and a future star...now he is a rotting pile of garbage"
had before this season, and the Mets intimate knowledge of his healthy, it's pretty amazing in hindsight that Sandy went into the season with him and Harvey penciled in as #3 and #4 starters for a supposed contender. Yikes.
talked with a scout who saw Harvey last night. Said he sat 89-93 and his breaking ball didn't look good.
I'm treating (and I'm sure Harvey is at this point too) the rest of this year as an extended rehab assignment for him. Let's see how his strength and stuff look during his last 2 or so starts in September.
I figured Harvey was done after last season and didnt (and still don't) expect much from Wheeler.
I thought Matz would be with deGrom and Thor at this point, rather than the rest of the group of question marks.

Hopefully Syndergaard and Degrom are the real deal

This is Wilmer Flores' 3rd season with 15 or more HR at age 25 or younger. Only Darryl Strawberry & David Wright have more. #MetsFacts

Would it be any other way? This is the effing Mets we are talking about. This is how how it always goes with them.

He really is Ricky Vaughn like from major league 2
