Anatomy of Browns Two Sacks...

M.S. : 8/22/2017 5:17 am
...on first one, very well-executed by Cleveland with big DE Emanuel Ogbah smashing into both John Jerry and Bobby Hart, and practically splitting the two, while LB, Joe Schonert (split wide) takes a step or two forward then slices around and inside into a wide hole vacated by John Jerry.

On the one hand, I wanted to put all the blame on John Jerry because he got fooled and was too slow to disengage and get his body in front of Joe Schonert, who sacked Eli pretty hard. Shouldn't have Jerry honored the inside?

On the other hand, maybe that play isn't all on Jerry! Putting aside the very fine execution by Cleveland, Center Rich Richburg was uncovered and turned to his left. If his head is on a swivel, maybe he sees a streaking Joe Schonert and at least gets part of his body in front of him.

The second sack made me feel much worse. No stunting whatsoever. Cleveland just rushes three. At first I thought it was all 100% on Flowers because he allowed Myles Garrett to drive him backwards and compress the pocket, sacking Geno Smith.

But Bobby Hart allowed Ogbah to do essentially the same thing on the other side. The middle of the line was fine with no penetration by the Nose Tackle, so one might assume that Geno Smith could have stepped into the pocket.

Not a chance.

Myles Garret played it straight and just shoved Flowers backwards, compromising the pocket right away, while Ogbah squeezed the pocket from the other side, which prevented Smith from turning to his right (to avoid pressure from Garrett). Incidentally, Pugh was uncovered, but his attempt to help out Flowers was too little and too late.

Bottom line on second sack: To be fair, neither Flowers nor Hart whiffed on their guys. Ultimately, they were just man-handled and surrendered too much ground too quickly.

But I'm not sure the troika of Pugh, Richburg and Jerry are entirely innocent! They had exactly one man in front of them and provided zero help to Flowers and Hart.

ps. Cleveland may do some real damage this year with Ogbah and Garrett!

was on Gino no reason to even go right just sit in the pocket and throw the ball.
It would be fun to see a couple of screenshots.

My memory, too, was that Geno made it easy for the Browns.

Hmmm... I'll look again, but I didn't see anywhere for G.S. to just set up back there and throw. The pocket looked like it collapsed inward from the sides.
Vereen may have been able to pick up that blitz

but it also looked like the play may have been designed for him and he would have had a lot of space it the QB hit him. (off of memory, no real analysis.
Flowers had great position on Garrett

Geno left the pocket and ran into that sack.

Yeah I think that was more on Smith

But the run blocking has me more concerned. Being forced into long passing situation contributes to the pass protection problems.
Every passing play...
x meadowlander : 8/22/2017 8:44 am : link
...has me holding my breath, and not for good reasons. This will be the 5th straight year where nearly every passing play feels like imminent disaster. NO pocket comfort EVER.

It has ruined Eli, IMO. He hasn't been the same since 2011.

Still, I remain optimistic. It can't last forever. Someday, the OL will stabilize. Could be next week. Lets hope so.

I've heard puts that second sack directly on Smith. He did that last week also...so did Johnson. These guys are awful quarterbacks. I'd either bring someone else in or see what Webb has got...at least he's young.

I checked it out again.

True -- Geno Smith ran into the sack, but he definitely drifted in to the left because Ogbah was coming in from the right (against Hart).

And Flowers did no favor for Geno... as I said before, he was man-handled by Garrett and surrendered way too much ground.

To say that sack was primarily on Geno is not correct. He was flushed left (because of Hart) and there was no pocket to step into because of Flowers.

Multiple ex-player announcers on the game, and later in the video's, said it was all Geno. OL don't always stand their guy up. Flowers had position and was holding, Geno panicked and ran around Flowers right into Garrett.
Tackles rountinely get in the position Flowers was in
PatersonPlank : 8/22/2017 9:57 am : link
its unavoidable and the best do it. Sometimes it takes time to anchor against the rush. Thats why QB's drift forward into the pocket a lot. What they don't do is run into the DE, but we've now seen both Johnson and Geno do it.
Wasn't Jerry's fault

I was told he went to the LaCharles Bentley camp - by invitation only. It's like Eyes Wide Shut for fat shitty turds.

I'm told he's much improved and is trying and is a prototypical RG. I'm told he's our starting RG until 2035.

Easy to sit behind a keyboard and say that. I'm fine with criticizing the way players play (that's what this message board is for), but that seemed a little extra to me; maybe I'm wrong.

Evidently you werent around for the John Jerry troll's daily Jerry affirmation that he's simply misunderstooD and one of the leagues premier guards.

We are now heading into season 4 of Jerry's suckitude. Many here were adamant against his signing in 2014. Many more argued against resigning a guy who's underperformed for seven pro seasons across two franchises and who excels in only one area of the game - pulling. Kind of limits your options on offense when your 6'5" 350lb OG can't sustain or push on a running play and is below avg as a pass blocker.

I'm a Reese fan but this is squarely on his shoulders.
