"I'm STILL Geno Smith, DAMMIT !!!"

Rafflee : 8/22/2017 6:21 am
Geno forecs the ball and the interception, instead of throwing it into the stands and taking 3...and the look on McAdoo's face just said it all.

I root for Geno---especially love to see tarred and feathered QB's dump their critics....but that throw is a very big mark against him.
McAdoo scares me with his lack of QB understanding
ZogZerg : 8/22/2017 6:29 am : link
He has 2 guys that both stink on this team wasting valuable reps for our 3rd round draft pick. No clue why he signed Gino or what he sees in Johnson. Now he's not giving the rookie a chance to learn during the preseason. I think he is completely mishandling the QB situation.
Always thought he was a plus player...
M.S. : 8/22/2017 6:31 am : link

...save for one thing: way too many inexplicable INTs.

He just baffles me with some of the balls he throws.

I'm ok
George : 8/22/2017 7:35 am : link
With Genoa Smith as our #2. But not as our #1. I'm not ok with Josh Johnson on the roster.
Ay carumba

Because Webb is already going to make the roster as the #3. The competition is between Smith and Johnson for #2 and neither guy has shown anything to seperate himself from the other.
Geno has arm talent
joeinpa : 8/22/2017 8:08 am : link
That s not something you can teach. Maybe the game never slows down enough for him to stop making the type of mistakes that have defined his career to this point.

But if he ever figured it out, he could be pretty special. Not close in my opinion his competition with Johnson based on what I ve observed in two preseason games.

Geno and Johnson were putrid
Lawrence_Taylor_56 : 8/22/2017 8:11 am : link
I'd almost rather they be cut now so then Webb gets more reps. I'm not even sure them knowing the offense is a plus. If you know the offense and play this bad why are you needed?
I feel a little bad for Geno
SomeFan : 8/22/2017 8:19 am : link
Really good arm, appears to have the desire but gets screwed with some bad decisions/throws. Some of it seems like bad luck. I think he will bounce around the NFL and one day have to start for an extended period and his luck will change.

That's actually not what's happening. Maybe you want Webb to work out now (wouldn't that be great) but IMO they have already decided they are keeping 3 QBs so Webb can officially redshirt. And this has nothing to do with McAdoos lack of QB understanding (no idea how you even conclude that) and everything to do with giving these backups every chance to make their case for the #2 spot. Why give reps to Webb when he won't be the #2 QB?

The fact that McAdoo thinks Gino or Josh are good options as backup QBs show his lack of having an eye for QB talent.

You're right, but that's never been the issue. The issue is an extra roster spot. Taken in that context -and if you decide that cutting a very good player matters, then it's a different argument.

You are, maybe unintentionally, implying that you have a better understanding of how to work with QBs.
I didn't mind giving Geno a low risk look
jcn56 : 8/22/2017 9:13 am : link
but honestly, he still seems like the same player to me. At that point, I'd rather save the money and roster spot and go with Webb. Even if forced into duty, I can't imagine Webb would be much worse than Geno.

UConn4523 : 8/22/2017 9:24 am : link
McAdoo isn't the GM, these are the QBs on the roster. There aren't many teams with capable backups, we need someone who can handle a game or two should Eli get dinged. Out for the year and the season is gone anywayz

Grizz, you really don't understand how this works. Webb isn't playing this year, he isn't ready. 3 QBs was always the plan, are you just realizing this now?

But that is what happens when you draft a QB not quite ready for the NFL. You can't afford to waive him to the practice squad, he'll never last. So you are committing to carrying 3 QB's. While I'm sure McAdoo had input in who those QB's were, it is Reese pulling the trigger.

I saw some good things from Geno last night, he was on top of rush packages for the most part, but his sack with 3 rushers was pathetic and totally on him. His throw on 4th & 5 was a major league throw, on time and on target. But the INT was inexcusable. That can't happen.

My guess is that if neither Geno nor JJ establishes himself, Reese will be looking for an experienced vet at cutdown time. They're always available.
Smith should do well witht the right org and coaching
spike : 8/22/2017 9:26 am : link
But the Jets wasnt the right group to develop his talebts
Why can't we have a rookie backup QB?
BigBlueWhale : 8/22/2017 9:28 am : link
Look around the NFL: rookie QBs are starting. And we can't even have a backup?

Webb is a better player than Geno and Josh Johnson already.
Looked to me
PEEJ : 8/22/2017 9:28 am : link
like Lewis might have cut off his route (ala Reuben Randle).
The only way I'd be OK with Webb being #3
jcn56 : 8/22/2017 9:30 am : link
is if they really feel there's a chance he's the successor to Eli, and they don't want to ruin his future/development by throwing him into live action if the situation is presented.

Otherwise, based purely on wins/losses, I'm low enough on Geno Smith to think Webb would be about even.
picking up from last year we still
Chuck Q : 8/22/2017 9:30 am : link
have no running game and that doesn't look like its going to change. With that in mind, neither Smith nor Johnson will give us the opportunity to win many, or even any, games on the strength of (or there lackof) their QB skills should the "un-mentionable" happen. DAMNIT! ... I wanted to see Webb in there last night.
He comes off
Dankbeerman : 8/22/2017 9:47 am : link
as a rookie at times, you see the tools and ability, seems bright in calling audibles and what not but still feels like he needs to be developed
I'd get rid of both Geno and Johnson
PatersonPlank : 8/22/2017 9:49 am : link
Give the reps to Webb. If a decent veteran comes lose at cutdown day grab him.
This is the perfect time to give
NikkiMac : 8/22/2017 10:45 am : link
The rookie QB a chance because their is more than just being able to fill in for Eli if he gets hurt , theirs a lot of preparation stuff Eli needs help with and the matter of who he is comfortable with ..... Well he hasn't had enough time to say who is better because he basically just started working with these guys so can't use that as an excuse!!!!
Maybe a better veteran backup will become available with
Ira : 8/22/2017 10:56 am : link
the cuts that are coming soon. Even Cleveland has better backups than we do.
Been saying it all offseason
djm : 8/22/2017 10:58 am : link
I don't want geno to win the job. Don't want him to play well. I just don't trust him. Go "resurrect" your career elsewhere.
Kevin Hogan will be cut by the Browns
Stratman : 8/22/2017 3:10 pm : link
He is the quintessential back up. A game manager who will take care of the ball. He may not have a ton of physical ability, but he knows there the ball is supposed to go and where it isn't. Geno hasn't learned that.
Webb is not a better player
Modus Operandi : 8/22/2017 3:29 pm : link
You guys get so wrapped up in draft prospects that you forget that these guys have a ton of developing to do before they're ready to step into a game. And even then there will be growing pains.

It's not like Webb was a first round pick. He has a lot of question marks of his own - including mechanics and being more accurate - to work out before he's a viable player.
Glad to know that Eli has never thrown a stupid pick
Bob in Newburgh : 8/22/2017 4:30 pm : link
What is ludicrous is the beating the drum that Webb is better here and now than Geno.

Unless Geno was psychologically ruined because of the last 2 years and is now self-destructive, the Webb described in the scouting reports can in no way give a NFL team a better chance to win.
