Paul Perkins

I know a lot of people are getting on the o-line, but i thought perkins was a big problem last night. I saw at least 3 instances where he did not follow his blockers or there was a hole and he pivoted right into the defense. Can't blame the o-line for that. Darkwa and Gallman were much better. Also cleveland front is very very talented, garrett is a stud, ogbah is verry good, and danny shelton didn't even play, they have very goo pass rushers because the drop off in the 2nd half to their 2nd team was quite noticeable.
I said it in the off season

and I will say it again. Perkins does not look like a "feature" back to me. He is not decisive to the hole. Many were passing judgment when he was in space , where he is excellent, but otherwise, nothing special. Those who continue to like Darkwa, I just don't understand. He cannot block and could eventually get a QB hurt, especially with a porous OL. I think Gallman has potential but he does fumble. Cannot understand why we did not try to sign a power back like Blount.
I can only assume that after getting pounded behind

the line so many times, you start to feel like you have to make things happen on your own. Maybe he doesnt follow his blocks because he doesnt trust them. Personally, I believe the same thing happened to Jennings.
People are strange...

Blount hasn't been a "feature back" for several years, and is on the other side of the hill, yet some think he'd instantly make the offense better.

Why, because he's not here?

per Rotoworld:

According to NJ.com's Matt Lombardo, LeGarrette Blount has dealt with "weight issues" at Eagles camp, and has "disappointed" in practice.
Both Lombardo and NFL insider Adam Caplan have suggested Blount might not make the Eagles. Signed to a mere one-year, $1.25 million deal with next to no guarantees, Blount has reportedly been outplayed by Wendell Smallwood, and looked lost running out of the shotgun in Philly's second preseason game.

just doesn't look comfortable or instinctive. to be honest - aside from the fumble - Gallman looks the part.
Maybe we
LCtheINTMachine : 8/22/2017 9:45 am : link
should bring back Brandon Jacobs.
Perkins has been playing against the #1's behind our lousy

run blocking line. Gallman has been running against #3's and guys who will be cut.
Perkins has lost the explosive

edge he showed last year. Hopefully we're seeing preseason growing pains from a young guy taking on a starting role.
The guy sitting out there

that still kind of intrigues me is Deangelo Williams. To my eyes, he still had plenty of juice the last time I saw him...but the league doesn't seem to think so I guess.
I would not mind more darkwa
idiotsavant : 8/22/2017 11:16 am : link
as a single back, at least he runs hard. sure, you might loose part of the playbook, but with a hard runner at least you get play action and there are plenty of receivers
Problem with Darkwa. He disappears after 3 or 4 carries

I like the guy and thought his health problems were behind him. Last night was same old same old.
Eli's Audible Run
nms24 : 8/22/2017 2:22 pm : link
On the play in the 2nd quarter when Eli audibled and Gruden called out Engram for not blocking the DE, the line actually opened a nice hole on the right side, and Perkins just sat there staring at it. Pretty awful.

Agree about Perkins

He is a change of pace back that's still has room to learn and IMO Gallman running style doesn't bode all that well to me but its too early to cast judgement until he runs into
starting Defenses when the real bullets fly .

Yeah -- those pictures also don't show what happened to that hole - it was filled pretty quickly - you can see 53 eying it and starting to make his move in the last picture

I love all the work you do for BBI, but you are wrong on this one. The hole was there for at least 2 seconds Perkins stopped in his tracks after the handoff and then made a bad decision to bounce it outside despite plenty of open space.

Holes are not there for a long time in the NFL - this one was open long enough and Perkins needed to hit it much more aggressively.

appreciate your comments - i guess we saw it differently

you could be right -- one thing I can tell you is that I have to look at plays four or five times in slow spurts to see what's happening and my view point refines as I relook at specific spots each time, including what the player with the ball is seeing. There were a number of times where the hole opened up before Perkins even got the ball and by the time he started at it - there were things starting to happen to interfere with it - you can see my complete breakdown here

Who is #91 and why was he allowed into the backfield untouched?
Brown Recluse : 8/23/2017 10:26 am : link
That isn't on Perkins.

He "lost it" in 1 off-season ... or maybe having half the defensive
line in the backfield as your getting a handoff is the problem

on this particular play
nms24 : 8/23/2017 11:05 am : link
I have to ask myself what could the offensive line have done any better? Everyone is well blocked (except 91 who Engram missed). Ellison is peeling off and about to block the linebacker. Heart was more than holding his own. The hole is open. Everything does happen in a few split seconds literally. I think when you hear a coach saying the running back needs to hit the hole though, this is what they are talking about.
Watching it again
nms24 : 8/23/2017 11:10 am : link
Maybe Perkins was reading 91 coming down the line. So maybe I'm wrong.
