I still wonder what movies he would have eventually made or been casted in instead of lesser comedians.
The Grownup movies alone would have been completely different if you switch Kevin James out for Farely (which would have been the case if he were alive)
grew up with him as the Voice of the Genie... and remember as a little tike my parents and brother roaring with laughter watching good morning Vietnam.
What a story of sacrifice, courage and selflessness... As a veteran and an NFL fan, his death was a gut punch. It got worse when it was revealed that he died from friendly fire and the Army was less than forthcoming about that 'detail'.
I was a sophomore in college, and a huge Beatles and Lennon fan. I was in my dorm room studying (I know, hard to believe!), and a friends knocked on my door. He had been watching MNF in the pub, so we both went back to see what happened. When we found out he passed, we hopped on the subway and headed to Central Park. I had no idea what we would find, but I just had to be there.
Musically - John Lennon and it doesn't come close. Was just coming back strong, would have been tremendous in the global hunger movements of the 80's. And he had stated that he presumed that eventually the Beatles would reunite - we were just waiting for it...
Insensitive, but no one really bothered me. I would say just more of a shock like "oh wow, that's terrible" is my way of being affected. Paul Walkers death really shocked me, more so in the manner in which he died. And Heath Ledger was another one.
Also, might sound silly, but James Gandolfini dying really sucked. He's from Park Ridge, NJ and my dad and mom grew up in the surrounding towns (Montvale and Hillsdale). Plus the Sopranos was a great show.
I really enjoyed Tim Russert's commentary and Meet the Press but also particularly enjoyed the book he wrote about his dad (Big Russ and Me). Having grown up in Buffalo, he was a huge Bills fan and I happened to go to college in western NY and was there the four years the Bills lost the Super Bowl (first one to the Giants!). I went to his book signing and mentioned that fact (since he would have heard of my school) and he laughed. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy. I was working from home and had a golf tournament on NBC on in the background (I think The Masters) and they broke in with the news that Russert had suffered a heart attack. I bawled all afternoon. I don't usually get choked up about celebrity deaths but he was the kind of guy you felt you knew personally.
Was sitting with him pregame once having a snack and kickoff was just a few minutes away. Some sweet young intern walks over and says, "Mr Lynch, they're ready for you now." And he looks up without missing a beat and says "Tell them Mr Lynch will be in when he's finished with his pudding."
He gave me a little smirk and went back after his dessert which to me looked like he then took his sweet time finishing.
I was always a huge, huge Pantera fan, especially growing up. They were a big reason I ever got into heavier music, and Dime on his own, for me at least, is the greatest guitar player of all time. I remember his band, Damageplan, played a show in Jersey a couple weeks before he got shot. I skipped it figuring I would have plenty of other opportunities to see him play live. Unfortunately, he was murdered in stage soon after, and I never got my chance. After he died, there were so many accounts of how great of a person he was beyond his playing. So often you hear stories about your idols turning out to be dicks, it was nice to know that he was an exception.
well Anna Nicole is dead, and I know Owen Wilson wanted to kill himself, but as far as I know, Owen Wilson is very much alive......
Jeremy Grey: I'm getting married.
John Beckwith: Get out.
[Points at the door]
Jeremy Grey: But you just said you were happy...
John Beckwith: I'm hanging by a thread. I'm reading don't-kill-myself books.
Jeremy Grey: You said the book wasn't yours.
John Beckwith: Don't worry about the book. It's not mine. But I glanced at it.
Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington were tough to absorb.
Phil Hartman's death and the whole situation with his wife hit me pretty hard. The part about their two children being in the house when she killed Hartman, then herself ... just awful to imagine, still today.
Still bothers me to this day. From a shock standpoint (the way he was killed), from a musical standpoint and from someone who you could always rely on to have his finger on the pulse of what was really important in life. He lost love as a child and spent the rest of his life trying to find it again. It's a lesson I think we could all still learn.
The Grownup movies alone would have been completely different if you switch Kevin James out for Farely (which would have been the case if he were alive)
More recently it was Scott Weiland. Just loved his voice.
Weird.
But I certainly mourned the passing of Dick Lynch and Jerry Garcia. I grew up listening to both and really felt as if they were a part of my life.

Pat Conroy's passing was a big loss. He had many more stories to write.

I don't know why...and this isn't a political comment, but I think this is funny as hell.

I was more upset when Reggie Lewis passed. I stopped watching for a long time after.
