One thing that always bugged me about Gino is when he gets the ball he runs back 15 to 20 yards before he sets up to throw the ball. So he has to make a 30 yard throw for a 10 yard gain and it is a big loss when he gets caught back that far.
For those games he had Decker nearly 100% healthy, an adequate, not great running game and not much else on offense. He had a defense that kept games close.
That man could win games in the NFL, at least in a managed offense. He was also a red zone weapon the defense had to account for.
Whether what he has gone through the last 2 years has permanently erased any chance of seeing that player again remains to be seen. He has to be rusty given the lack of game play the last 2 seasons.
Only Giants player he has any experience with is Marshall, and based on circumstances with the broken jaw, knee injury and Fitzpatrick there is a lot less than you might think.
RE: Only an organization as bad as the Jets would draft a guy like this
with enough talent to help - as an insurance - who's biggest problem was the occasional mental meltdown. His upside was reasonable for us, if a change of scenery could cure the miscues. It hasn't worked, but that doesn't mean it was a stupid risk to take.
is that Smith and Johnson kind of suck.. They want a veteran backup so they dont have to rely on the rookie if something happens to Eli, but man, those guys fucking suck.
Where he was on fire? I remember seeing him on - I think - a Monday night game against Atlanta and he was throw darts and wowing the broadcast crew. It's weird the way a guy can have a few great games and then *poof* he's junk. Kind of like Larry Donnell.
I still don't think he's quite as awful as others do.
His problem seems to be that he can't avoid that one backbreaking mistake. He does a lot of good things and then he erases it by making a really bad throw right into traffic.
If he could just stop doing that, he'd be serviceable - but I realize this is just how some guys are. They just never fully get it.
I still think if he played with the 1's and had OBJ/Marshall at his disposal and the defense we have right now, we'd be able to hang in most games and win a couple if he could just avoid turning the football over.
I think Josh Johnson is absolutely terrible and has no redeeming qualities. I don't totally feel that way about Geno.
Also, I know my opinion on him is not popular around here and most posters want to just keep Webb and no one else.
I wouldn't feel like we were automatically punting a game if Geno had to come in and play with the starters, though. Our odds would lower quite a bit - but with Webb, I think we'd be completely punting any real game he had to play in right now.
I think he's very promising but that's not a guy you can put into live action in year 1 and win games with. Geno at least has some actual NFL experience under his belt and has started a fair share of games (albeit with mostly bad results)
Wow, I didn't even realize what was actually in the OP - I kind of skipped over it and just read the other posts and added my 2 cents about the player.
Is this poster serious about the 20 yard dropbacks? Holy shit.
Do people here realize an NFL starter that won games is better than most backups?
People getting so worked up about the preseason?
Geno is a below average NFL starter that does not make him a terrible backup. He is still a good backup and was not a bad choice for nyg.
He makes the same stupid rookie mistakes Webb would. The sack he took and the red zone interception he threw are exactly why a 3rd QB is a waste of a roster spot. This season is over if Geno needed to fill in - no running game to hide behind

His big problem is he is a dreadful NFL QB. Absolutely awful.
Even worse. I hope they just keep 2 QBs and give the backup job to Webb.
Yup. Just carry Webb behind Eli. Unfortunately, they won't. My reasoning is that with our D, Webb should be able to be managed like other rookies. Besides, if he's our legitimate future, throw him in there.
Aside from the "veteran" BS - why even bother with 3 QBs? He's awful - Webb should be getting as many practice reps as possible to learn the pro game / new offense
for the future and also not good enough to be of benefit to the 2017 team. It's not mutually exclusive. There's too much fan expectation for a quarterback that barely has experience taking snaps from under center.
College QBs who come from a spread offense are usually behind other QBs when it comes to running an NFL offense.
That's why Goff (the #1 pick in the draft and another Cal QB) started out as a 3rd string QB with the Rams last year, despite his lofty draft status and the fact that the Rams sucked. When Goff finally did play he proved that he wasn't ready.
Yes, if Eli goes down for the season everyone knows that we're screwed. But if he misses just a few games you'll feel a lot better knowing there's a veteran QB available. It could be the difference between making or missing the playoffs
he's his own worst enemy.

And only our brain dead GM would consider him as our back up QB. Go figure!!
Yep.

The vast majority of backup QBs suck and cost a lot more than Geno will if he even makes the team.
If they were good, they'd be starters somewhere or at least on a team with a better shot of competing to start.

That's a joke right? 20 yards?
That's a joke, right?

Except its actually happening...he is making the team.
Might as well get DeOssie in there to long snap that shit to Geno according to this mental defective.
I'm really at a loss reading some of these posts today. I had no idea there are so many stupid Giants fans, Joey.

There's the pre-requisite Reese bashing!

He's certainly better than Johnson.
