Breakdowns of the First Team Offensive Sets Monday Night

First Offensive Set, First Quarter

First and 10 at the 25: The Giants opened up with their five starting Olinemen, Eli under center, Beckham just right and Marshall just left of the line, Engram and Ellison were in the backfield with Perkins at tailback. The whole line moved forward at the snap, the hole started opening at Pugh’s position, and he slipped into the second level, Flower’s man Garret moved to fill in the hole with Flowers engaged turning to the right and Engram hit Flowers as they moved into the hole just behind Pugh. Ellison was slower to get there behind Richburgh before Perkins even had his hands on the ball. Marshall held his block, and the CB (23) covering Beckham saw it was a running play all the way, got the jump and slipped inside Beckham behind the line as the middle bunched up. Hart seemed to have terrific leverage – but each of the 5 lineman were engaged. Ellison literally had no to block as he came in behind Flowers, Engram, Richburgh and Jerry who had converged and tried to clear the middle, Pugh engaging two linebackers in the second level. Marshall lost contain and Perkins was looking at a collapsed hole and a CB coming at him on either side of the line. He elected to run behind Engram and slammed into him and they both went down at the LOS.

Second and 10 at the 25: Beckham splits wide Right, Marshall left, Ellison takes the TE spot to the right, Engram to the right slot, Perkins just behind and left of Eli who was in shot gun formation three yds back for the snap. Perkins releases left at the snap. Jerry and Pugh both stayed in position with no man to block. Garret moved to the right of Flowers as they engaged Marshall, Engram and Beckham start straight up the field. Hart gets plowed into and holds his position without giving up the pocket, the receivers all hook around with coverage glued to them, Perkins is wide open at the line of scrimmage. Jerry moves right and back to assist Hart. Perkins gets the outlet pass but is immediately hit by a CB. Gain of 2 yds.

Third and 8 at the 27: Vereen comes in on third down. Beckham splits wide right, Marshall left, Engram to the right slot, Ellison covers the Left Tackle, Vereen lines on Eli’s right side in the shot gun three yds behind the line. Ellison releases off the line, Vereen to the center of the line where a gap opens. Vereen releases to the opening where a Blitzing LB, who had stunted/looped from going at Hart to the left and around an engaged Jerry into the same hole Vereen slips through, and then straight at Eli. Jerry tries to release his man to Hart and turn to get the Blitzer but he’s already through and past. Sack at the 17.

Second Offensive Set First Quarter

First and 10 at the 26: Giants in 11 formation, Beckham right, Marshall left Shepard in the left slot. Eli in the shot gun 3 yds behind Center, Perkins just to his right. Engram covers the right side. Beckham motions left towards Engram. At the snap Engram releases to the seam, Shepard to the outside left. The Browns outside right End stunts from Hart to the inside around an engaged Jerry again. Garret pushes outside and behind Flowers on the left side, Flowers stays with him. Engram hooks around on the seam, Eli steps up and throws a 4 yd strike to Engram, who spins around left and makes another yd up field.

Second and 5 at the 31: Smith checks in as does Ellison. Giants line up in the I formation with Perkins the tailback, Beckham left, Marshall right, Ellison on the left side. Smith motions right two steps. At the snap Smith goes at the open man, trips and falls, Pugh and Richburgh pull right into the second level. Perkins is able to outrun Smith’s man to the right edge where Marshall is engaged on the second level. Hart’s man releases to the right and grabs Perkins from behind and to the outside. Loss of a yd.

Third and 6 at the 30: Vereen, Engram and Shepard check in. Beckham splits wide left, Shepard left in the slot, Engram covers the right side, Marshall split wide right, Eli in the shotgun, Vereen to his right. Beckham motions to the slot just inside Shepard, Vereen inside, Engram releases right, Beckham to the insdie. Pocket holds, just misses Marshall by a yd or two at the 54, who had beat his man, and had coverage coming over the top. Flag is thrown at the end of the play for the hit on Marshall and picked up.

Let me note that Flowers had done a good job up to this point containing his man- the high arms shown on the highlights were inside, or without grabbing and holding, and one arm only and many times after the play.

Third Offensive Set First Quarter

First and 10 at the 11: Giants in I formation, Marshall wide left, Beckham wide right, Shepard in the right slot, Engram at full back, Perkins the tailback, Eli under center. Engram moves to the left side between Flowers and Pugh, and releases from the defender in the gap with Perkins tailing, Eli steps back into the pocket with the ball, faking the handoff, pocket holds and Eli fires to Engram moving to the inside high, he leaps and catches the ball and gets good yds after the catch to the 32.

First and 10 at the 32: Giants in 11 formation, Marshall left, Beckham right, Shepard in the right slot, Engram covering the left side Perkins right of Eli in the shot gun. Perkin motions inside. Eli fakes the handoff, and looks right, quick throws to Beckham at the line of scrimmage. Beckham spins around and makes the first man miss and gets seven yds upfield and then out of bounds.

Second and 3 at the 39: Giants in I formation, Marshall wide right, Beckham wide left, Smith is the Fb, Perkins the tailback, Ellison on the left side, Eli under center. Smith moves right, then forward, then left at the snap, Jerry pulls left, Flowers pushes right to open the hole between him and Ellison. Eli hands off to Perkins who heads into the hole behind Jerry, with Smith leading, Ellison’s man, who is inside of him gets behind interfering with Perkins path, and he gets contained from the outside as Jamie Collins comes into support the play from the left side of the backfield to behind the line. Loss of a yd.

Third and 4 at the 38: 11 formation Shepard motions ot the left slot, Beckham left, Marshall right, Engram covering the left side, Perkins to Eli’s right in the shot gun. Engram releases up the right seam, Perkins stays in to block right, all four receivers are covered, the pocket holds, and Shepard breaks across as Eli tries to throw to him underneath the coverage, the ball goes off Shepard’s hands and is almost intercepted at the first down marker.

Fourth Offensive Set End of First Quarter

First and 10 at the 43: Eli under center, Engram and Shepard set behind and left of Flowers, Engram inside, Beckham wide left, Marshall wide right, Perkins the tailback. At the snap Engram and Shepard pull right, Perkins motions left as Eli drops back to fake hand off and flip to Shepard running right and now led by Engram, with Marshall moving left to block in front. Shepard gets hit two yds out to the 45 as Marshall’s man is able to release from him.

Second and 8 at the 45: Marshall wide right, Beckham, wide left, Shepard in the left slot, Engram at FB to the left and in front of Eli in the shot gun, Darkwa just to the right of and behind Eli. Eli motions Darkwa to behind Engram to the left, Jerry pulls left, Pugh and Engram pull right, with Darkwa taking the hand off and following Pugh and Engram. Jamie Collins rushes the edge and gets behind the line engaged by Pugh interfering with Darkwa’s outside angle, so he turns inside and runs up field for a yd or so. First Quarter ends.

Third and 7 at the 46: Marshall left, Beckham right, Engram to the right and behind the line, Shepard in the left slot, Darkwa to Eli’s left in the shotgun. Browns come with a blitz, no one covering Shepard, Darkwa engages the left edge rusher and helps maintain the pocket. Eli throws left to Beckham on a comebacker, and he spins to the left and is held and pushed out of bounds across the 50 to the 42 with a first down.

First and 10 at the 42: Giants in I formation, Smith a FB, Darkwa at tailback, 2 TE’s left Engram covering the tackle and Ellison set back at the edge, Beckham in the tight in the right slot. Ellison motions right. At the snap Beckham up the seam, Ellison out to the right, Engram moves out to the left. Eli fakes to Darkwa, the pocket holds. Garret swings out and in pushing Flowers to tighten the pocket. Eli throws to Beckham on the right side at the 25. This is the low hit play taking Beckham out of the game. The way he was snapped (Beckham) and his head hit the turf it’s amazing Beckham held onto the ball.

First and 10 at the 24: Giants in 11 personnel, Marshall left, Shepard in the left slot, Engram covering the right side, not sure who was lined at WR on the right, Darkwa the tailback behind Eli under center. Eli changes the play and moves into shot gun position, Darkwa to his right. Eli quickly throws left to Shepard behind the line and he skitterbugs up to the 20 yd line and is pushed out of bounds.

Second and 6 at the 20: Giants in 11 personnel, Eli in the shotgun, Engram covering Flowers on the left, Shepard in the right slot, Darkwa the tailback to Eli’s left. Garret gets around Flowers and tries to come in from behind as Eli steps up. Jerry gets pushed in tightening the pocket. Eli forced to get rid of the ball as the pocket tightens to the outlet, Shepard, who had crossed to the left about three yds out. Throw is low and not caught.

Third and 6 at the 20: Giants in 11 personnel, Darkwa to Eli’s right in the shot gun, Engram covering the left tackle, Shepard in the right slot, Marshall out to the left King must be the WR to the right. Engram up the seam at the snap, ball is tipped and goes over his head.

Fifth Offensive Set Second Quarter

First and 10 at the 5: Giants in the I formation, Eli under Center, Smith at FB, Perkins the Tailback, Ellison covering the left tackle, WRs split wide. Everyone on the line gets great push to the right including Ellison at the edge, and Perkins has a huge lane to run at right of center, and he blasts up the seam to the 21 for 16 yds.

First and 10 at the 21: Again in the I formation Engram starts at the right side covering Hart and motions to the left slot, Smith at FB, Perkins at Tailback the WRs split wide. Smith runs straight up the gut with Perkins tailing after the handoff. Richburgh and Jerry push up with Smith behind them, but the Browns close the hole quickly penetrating sideways from the left side behind them stopping Perkins at the line.

Second and 10 at the 21: Three TE set to the left (Engram covering the left tackle, Ellison set behind him, Shepard in between them to the left) Perkins at tailback, Marshall split wide right. Ellison motions straight across right, to the right slot behind the line. Pocket holds, Eli throws quick right to Ellison a the 22 just as the announcers are saying he is not much of a wide receiver and he busts up an additional 5 yds to the 27 for a 6 yd gain.
Third and 4 at the 27: Giants go into a similar set as before, but Vereen replacing Perkins, Engram split into the right slot, and three WRs (Shepard, Lewis and Marshall) bunched on the left hash. Eli changes the play coming up to the line yelling Fire! Fire! And then back to the shotgun. Eli gets great protection for the pocket, fires right to Shepard on the crossing pattern who turns upfield for the first down at the 32.

First and 10 at the 32: Giants formation is a modified draw play, with Eli under center, Marshall split wide left, Shepard wide right, Ellison at FB is behind Eli shaded right, Engram to Eli’s left just behind the left tackle, and Perkins the Tailback. Eli changes the signal yelling Pass Through! Pass Through! then pointing to the left. Engram motions to cover the left tackle, Ellison points to the right end. The line pulls right, Engram releases and Nassib opposite Engram is free to get behind the line, as Eli hands off to Perkins, Nassib unabated busts up the play, loss of 4 yds.
Second and 14 at the 28: Giants in 11 formation, Engram covering the right tackle, Marshall and Lewis wide Shepard in the left slot, and Perkins shade right of Eli in the Shotgun. Eli quick throws to Shepard left behind the line and Shepard is quickly wrestled down and stripped of the ball at the line of scrimmage.
