Head Coach Ben McAdoo

August 29, 2017

Q: How is wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. doing?

A: He got some treatment, he’s in there taking care of himself, getting ready to go.

Q: What is Beckham able to do now, is he able to move around?

A: Yeah, he’s in there, he’s getting treatment, he’s going through his workouts, doing everything he can to get ready to go.

Q: Is Beckham running yet?

A: He’s in there, doing his treatment, doing his workouts, doing everything he can do to be ready to go.

Q: What went into the decision to waive defensive end Owa Odighizuwa?

A: We released a statement on it. It’s unfortunate that it came to this. We thank him for everything that he’s done for the organization. We supported him all along and we’ll continue to support Owa, and I really have no details to offer.

Q: The thought would’ve been, you could have kept Odighizuwa throughout his four-game suspension and it wouldn’t have cost you a roster spot.

A: That would’ve been the thought, yup.

Q: Is there a reason why you wouldn’t keep Odighizuwa for his four-game suspension?

A: Again, I have no details to offer.

Q: Did something unexpected happen with Odighizuwa, did you just find out his suspension yesterday?

A: I’m not going to go into any details on it.

Q: Do you plan to give wide receiver Brandon Marshall any snaps during Thursday’s preseason game?

A: Brandon looked good today, it was good to have him back out there at practice, knock some rust off. He made a nice, physical play at the back pylon there to the left. But as far as the playtime goes, we’ll handle it very similar to the way we handled last year’s playtime [in the fourth preseason game].

Q: What is your quarterback rotation going to be for Thursday’s preseason game?

A: We’re going to have that conversation at 5:30 today.

Q: Do you plan to play the starting offensive line during Thursday’s preseason game?

A: Again, we’re going to play the game very similar to the way we played last year’s [fourth preseason] game.

Q: Every starting offensive lineman except center Weston Richburg played in last year’s fourth preseason game, is it safe to assume it will be the same this year?

A: That could be a good place to start, yes.

Q: What has Brandon Marshall showed you in the last week or two, as far as his progression and the understanding of the offense?

A: He hasn’t been out there very much in the last couple of weeks. I mean, today was a good day for him to get back out there and get some routes on air and then get some of the work in the team periods.

Q: Do you plan to just play quarterbacks Josh Johnson and Geno Smith during Thursday’s preseason game, or does Davis Webb factor in, too?

A: Davis factors [in], yes.

Q: How much has defensive end Avery Moss impressed you this summer?

A: Yeah, Avery’s working. I talked to him the other day about just letting it rip, just playing fast and aggressive instead of thinking too much and that’s what happens to a lot of young players at this time, especially with the cut down coming. And on special teams, he’s making progress there, just playing fast. And on defense today you saw him flash a couple times. Whether it was an edge rush, or plucking the ball out of the air, dropping [into coverage].

Q: How much do you think the preseason correlates into what happens in the regular season, as far as results?

A: It doesn’t

Q: Not at all?

A: No. I don’t think the preseason – no. It’s a different game. The games are played for different reasons. You’re trying to evaluate your team, evaluate the players on your team.

Q: Even your starting unit, what they do in the preseason doesn’t correlate into the regular season?

A: Correct.

Q: What do you look for in the preseason results?

A: You want to get players work versus competitive players. You want to get your ones work versus other opponents’ ones. Get them good, quality work at high speeds and physicality.

Q: What do you look for in the fourth preseason game?

A: We want to give every player who’s on the bubble an opportunity to show what they can do.

Q: Did linebacker Keenan Robinson have a setback in his injury?

A: He’s still in the [concussion] protocol.

Q: How difficult does the injury situation at wide receiver make it when you are making the final decisions on the roster, as far as numbers?

A: No, injuries, they’re no excuse. We’re going to evaluate the players that we have, using the information that we have. Next man up. We have a lot of players who just walked through the door that are out here working very hard and trying to get a look and we’re going to give them a look.

Q: Where is linebacker Mark Herzlich?

A: Yeah, we chose to keep him inside.

Q: Is Injured Reserve a potential option for Herzlich at this point?

A: It’s early, we haven’t had those discussions at this point. It’s early, but we chose to keep him inside.

Q: Has the change to the roster cut downs, going from 90 players to 53 in one cut, changed the way that you look at this final week of the preseason?

A: We’re going to handle it similar to the way we handled it last year. I do like going from 90 to 53. I think it gives the players who are out there doing a lot of working, getting a lot of work, gives them an opportunity to show well for your team and for other teams in the league.

Q: With the kicking competition so even, does it come down to wanting to go with a young guy or a veteran?

A: Yeah, that’ll factor as we continue to look at the kickers and they continue to make everything. They did a nice job today, they continue to do a nice job. It’s a great competition, but we have to let the competition unfold.

Q: How is kicker Aldrick Rosas doing on his kickoffs?

A: Good. He booted a pretty nice one last week. He has a big leg, we know that. We know that he can kick the ball pretty deep, nine yards deep if need be with some hang on it. And he’s working on his game there. But, we’re confident in both guys that they can handle all aspects of the job.

Q: How much do you look at the Cowboys at this point, in preparation for Week One?

A: I like to take things one week at a time.
Ben you're friggin' torture:

The media asks the same question 3 times in a row and you blame McAdoo for his responses?

When you get a generic answer you keep plugging. That's what good reporters do..Yes, I blame McAdoo..Even TC would have answered the legit questions better than Ben, even if he (TC) wouldn't give away anything that could hurt them with a future opponent. AWFUL job by Ben there

Obviously doesn't enjoy talking to the media. Everyone is different.

How do you think Bill B. would have answered those questions? I guess we could have Rex Ryan and his funnies standing up there. He likes flapping to the media
In other words we know he's "in there getting treatment."
Big Blue '56 : 8/29/2017 4:25 pm : link
A kindergartener would know this..

Very simple: "He's obviously sore, but is responding nicely to treatment. He's doing everything he's being asked. You never know about these things, but we are optimistic about his progress."

Not saying all that much, but an answer most can live with. How he answered was obnoxious and unfair to the fans who want more than a jackass answer.
Belichick can give any answer he cares to.
Big Blue '56 : 8/29/2017 4:27 pm : link
He's earned that right. People have come to trust that he has everything under control..

Some coaches just won't give out much injury information on players. For several reasons. Heck, I'd love to know more too but we are probably going to have to get that from the beats as time goes on. Whether we like it or not.

Unfortunately, you're probably right. Also, I probably am better off not even opening an interview thread of his

Earn the right to be as flippant as you want. BB is torture to listen to so I opt not to, but he has the standing to get away with his non-info..I don't believe Ben does

LOL. "Awful" job? Who's grading the quality of his press conference responses? You think Pat Hanlon is pulling Coach into a room and saying, "hey Coach, next time maybe try to offer a little more depth in your responses to the Odell questions. The reporters are trying really hard out there to get some more information from you."

Also, your comparison to TC is not a good one. TC, like Belichick, was typically vague when questioned about injuries.

TC on DRC injury in Oct. 2014:
Quote:
What’s the status of Rodgers-Cromatrie?
A: We continue to do everything we can and he is slated to practice today. What he can do, you’d have to put it in the limited category.

Is there anything you can change with him, either during the game or during the week to sort of help him…?
A: We’re doing everything we can to help him.

At times, he offered nothing when asked for an update.

TC on Hosley injury in 2012:
Quote:

Q: Do you have an update on Hosley?
A: I don’t. I wish I could tell you, but I don’t. He’s sore.

Q: It’s still the turf toe?
A: It’s the toe, yeah.

Q: Nothing in the mid-foot or anything like that?
A: No. Mid-foot? No. It’s not there.

So if McAdoo offered that as an update, maybe that's all he's got. Maybe he does know more, but he's not a doctor. So who is he to pontificate on the matter? I'd rather he not dig for colorful words to describe a medical issue, just to appease these weak ass beat guys (here's looking at you, Graziano). Because, you know, he has a football team to coach.

instead as 56 said same obnoxious repetitive answer.

Probably because this was the exchange from yesterday:

Quote:

Q: How is wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. doing?

A: He’s improving.

Q: What does improving mean?

A: He’s getting treatment, he responds well to treatment and we’ll repeat that process again for tomorrow. So, you don’t have to ask the question.

Q: Is Beckham here with the team?

A: Yes, he’s with the team.

Q: Is Beckham leaving the team at all for any outside treatment?

A: Where is he going? No, he’s with the team getting treatment.

Q: Are you hopeful Beckham will play Week One of the regular season?

A: Yes, absolutely. I’m hopeful he’ll play tomorrow.

Q: If Beckham were healthy enough to play, would you play him in Thursday’s preseason game?

A: We’ll take it on a day-by-day basis. When he’s able to go, we’ll take him back. It’s a medical decision.
Well, I guess we know that AJ is Benny's White Night.

To make that much effort to dredge up old transcripts to defend Ben, is a bit much.
I am still not sure what to make of him....
Bluesbreaker : 8/29/2017 5:05 pm : link
To me he comes off a bit robotic even after a win it just doesn't seem genuine but it's probably his just his personality .
Lets see if he gets his offense off the ground this season .

To me as a fan? Awful job..He could have answered easily enough without the snark..It's not as if he had no idea what was going to be asked about OBJ's progress..
McAdoo is basically doing Coughlin-speak
BlackLight : 8/29/2017 5:21 pm : link
on the injury questions. The only cosmetic difference is that Coughlin didn't repeat his answers word-for-word. But he would never give you anything just from being asked the same questions over and over.

You'd get better answers from Mini Mac

At least he doesn't spend 15 minutes building up the other team and talking about how good they are individually..... Coughlin use to make me nauseous with that crap !!!!
More importantly,

what's the big secret? Dallas might find out he's hurt and will not prepare for him....give me a break. Can't stand the football coach that responds like he is holding state secrets about a football team. It's a game.
For the record,

I support BMac's non-response responses when it comes to injuries. No need for details; move on, beat reporters.
I'm perfectly fine

with McAdoo's answers (or lack thereof) in these pressers.

I actually got a chuckle when he answered the SAME question the same way 3 times.

That's every coach. Nobody talks about injuries.
