Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott

Conference Call

September 6, 2017

Q: What was your first reaction when you heard that running back Ezekiel Elliott would be playing Sunday against the Giants?

A: Good. I mean, just happy for my guy to be out there. I’m glad he’s getting to play and put all this stuff behind him for a week, or forever how long we get to. Just get out there and enjoy just being on the field with him and go get a win.

Q: What has Elliott been like at practice today, what is the mood there?

A: He’s been good. I mean, he realizes there’s not much he can do from this standpoint, it’s kind of all out of his hands and in the lawyer’s hands and he’s excited just about moving forward and you can just see that in his attitude. He’s gone out there and he’s taken on practice the right way. He’s done a great job.

Q: Could you have imagined the difference now, compared to last year heading into your rookie season?

A: Yeah, I mean, it’s been a big difference. It’s been a world wind. I’m much [more] comfortable now in the offense and everything that we’re doing here. A lot of success happened last year from that time to this point now. So, I’m just excited to be back out there and getting another opportunity.

Q: Does failing to beat the Giants last year give you any extra motivation heading into this game?

A: I think this game adds motivation in general. I mean, yeah, definitely not beating them adds motivation, it being game one to start a new 2017 season, you want it to come out the right way. That plays a big part in it.

Q: Why do you think this team can avoid the disappointing year that many successful teams have the following year?

A: I think, first, is that we don’t necessarily look at those stats or worry about those things. We’re a team that comes in focused each and every day. We’re worried about whatever’s at task. We’ve done a great job, led by our veterans and then just all these guys having the right attitude and coming in and just getting better. Some days – we practiced well today, first day of Week One, and had a great training camp. So as long as we just stay focused and take it one game at a time, we’ll be fine.

Q: How much do you think it sticks with wide receiver Dez Bryant, that he only had two catches against the Giants last season?

A: Yeah, I know it does. Dez is a passionate guy. I know it’s definitely motivated him coming into this game. He’s excited for it, he’s ready for his matchup. I’m sure [Giants cornerback] Janoris [Jenkins] is the same way.

Q: How do you change the Bryant-Jenkins matchup in your favor?

A: Just continue to go through my offense. When Dez is open and Dez has a chance and there’s one-on-one situations, give a guy like Dez Bryant a chance and it’s on him to go make that catch and I know he’s excited about those opportunities heading into Sunday.

Q: Are there particular parts of your game that you want to see get better this season?

A: I mean, I want to get better at every aspect of this game. It’s hard for me to pinpoint and say, this one, or [these] two things. So, for the most part, I’m only one year in, so there’s so much that I can get better at and I can still learn and just get a better grasp. I know that I’ve worked on a bunch this offseason all in general and in camp, recognizing things faster, recognizing the looks the defense is giving me and having a better idea of where I’m going with the ball post-snap and getting to it quicker.

Q: Has footwork been important to you and has it improved over time?

A: Yeah, it’s improved. Footwork is super important. I think as a quarterback, that’s a base and that starts everything. Your feet have to be in the right manner, right position to make those throws. So, you’re unbalanced or balanced with every throw you’re making. I mean, it’s huge for me. It’s huge for me and being an athletic quarterback, I’ve got to keep them sharp.

Q: Did last year’s Week One game against the Giants do anything confidence-wise for you, playing well even in a loss?

A: Yeah, I’m a confident guy. I guess a little bit because I played well, but for the most part, I had the confidence in myself and in my teammates and they definitely gave me confidence last year going into that game. I don’t think I played my best game, so I don’t think I played that well. So, my teammates just kind of got that confidence and then I just prepared better and ended up playing better [in the second game against the Giants] than I did in that first game. But, it was good to just get in there in live-action, not in preseason a year ago and give us a chance to win, I guess I can say better. May not [have] played my best, but gave us a chance to win.

Q: What did you take away from what Giants safety Landon Collins said about the Cowboys not winning the division this year and it’s the Giants time to takeover now?

A: I didn’t go back and forth with him at all, I guess he made a comment about what I said. So, I’m not really sure what he said, I didn’t really keep up with it for the most part. But, I’m sure he’s got confidence in himself and his defense and I hope he does. Being in the NFL, that’s part of it, you have to have confidence in yourself and in your teammates and you have to give those guys confidence. I think anybody in this league would be crazy if they didn’t think they were going to win or think they gave themselves a chance to win. So, when I was asked a question, that’s what I said. I’m just imagining that Landon said the same thing.
Kind of interesting...

I guess it has a bit to do with how the question was phrased, but his reaction to the Zeke news was to be happy? I'd have said - "While it's good that he'll get to play this Sunday, I'm not happy that they upheld the six game suspension." or something like that.

Being happy he gets to play while the arbitrator upheld a six game suspension - didn't reduce it even by one game - is a bit of a mystery to me.

The question was just about Sunday night.
