The other thread didn't have this and I thought it deserved it's own thread, even though it was expected.
Agree, this is new news and worthy of a new thread IMO

You are very concerned about people talking about Carton, who also don't like Carton. What's the difference between this and Ezekiel Elliot? I hate him too and there's 38 threads on him, many I've participated in.

Are these threads bothering you? This is the second time you've made this dickish comment. Which is odd since you clearly were interested enough to read through the first thread.

Or are you just trying to generate that "new poster" vibe? Sort of just throwing different personalities at the wall to see which one sticks?

But this is one of the biggest stories in sports, especially locally. It touches on theft, gambling, addiction, and sports; why wouldn't this be major news especially in the town that just dealt with this with the Mets?

He's confusing not liking Carton (or some other sports media person) with not caring. Two different things.

I don't like Carton much at all, but spend a lot of time in my car and often listen to NY area sports radio, so I follow what's going on in local sports media, and this is certainly newsworthy and obviously a big topic of discussion the day the news breaks.

Forget the actual programming - the station now not only has to review Carton's contract and see how they will exit, but review any and every possible sponsorship / deal that the station may have been involved in via Carton.

Not to mention that your "creation/legacy" of Boomer and Carton just went up in flames and Boomer will probably ask out of radio shortly thereafter. Meanwhile you've lost all leverage with Francesa.

Neil Best is going to write about this for months.

Someone young dying of cancer is tragic.

Someone who brazenly lied to people about his gambling conquests, only to rack up millions in losses in secret, who tried to pull in his friends and steal from them - that's not a tragedy. That's an asshole that deserves to be locked up, and probably in a shithole much worse than a federal pen for white collar criminals.

Even they weren't subject to a tragedy - just the selfishness of their spouse/father. If I go and piss away my family's life savings, that isn't tragic, it's fucking stupid and selfish.

If this were some nameless degenerate working class gambler who gambled away the rent money, would people be sympathetic to him?

Francesser and Carton

Francesser's 'heavy dude' or 'the final authority' act is just so fucking tiresome.

I can imagine him holding court in some dumbass nightclub in a 'come kiss the ring' type of role. Its just sports for gods sake.

With Schmooze and Mad Dog you get some humor, some madness, good insight to boot on sports and the implied awareness that this is all non-serious stuff, sports and chatter, and therefore a sense of humanity and a touch of self depreciation that Francesser and Carton lacked maybe.
mad dog would balance Boomer and Phil
idiotsavant : 9/7/2017 9:06 am : link

Replacements
TyreeHelmet : 9/7/2017 9:21 am : link
Who are the most likely replacements? Just throwing some names out.

1) Brandon Tierney- used to love this guy but he has gotten in love with "hot takes" recently.

2) Mad Dog Russo- would be absolutely perfect with his energy in the morning. But he's locked into Sirius.

3) Evan Roberts- could be a good fit next to Boomer. You can let Joe B be solo in the midday or find him a new partner.

4) Phil Simms- I'm not sure if this is the best option. Could be really good for NFL season, but other sports? Do you really want to hear from Simms about the NBA/ Baseball/etc? He just seems a little too similar to Boomer.

5) Greg Giannotti- Already under the CBS umbrella. Could be a good match with Boomer.

What do you guys think? Anyone else?

Here's a question
Cenotaph : 9/7/2017 9:35 am : link
why is it somehow seen as a less terrible crime to steal millions of dollars from people through fraud, then it is to steal comparably small amounts through theft/burglary? Carton appears to have lost/stolen millions here, and will likely end up in a 'white collar' club fed type prison...whereas a guy stealing from a store, etc will get thrown in rikers?

Actually probably better to not discuss (politics), just making the point that he shouldn't be favored due to 'celebrity' status, which he abused to defraud people of $...

When Russo came on and started busting on Boomer and kissing up to Simms was a good segment.........

I don't love Simms on the radio, he seems a bit unnatural, but he has legit chemistry with Boomer. 2 dry humor, arrogant blowhard ex QBs who bust each other's balls but genuinely like each other and have a long history together. way more than having Carton there.

But if I can nitpick, I think the ball-busting and playful shots they take at each other are a bit excessive. A minute doesn't go by without it. It just gets tired pretty quickly for me, and they do it on Inside the NFL, too.

If a show's co-hosts have a background in comedy, that kind of thing could work if they can keep coming up with new, funny ways of ribbing each other. But Boomer cracking that he has better hair than Phil? Eh, just cut back on that kind of thing.

The radio business doesn't pay like it used to anymore. Kellerman is likely making triple right now on TV what FAN will offer him to do radio.

Days of any new hire making $1 million in radio is over.

which is why

would be pure radio gold.

Boomer would carry the show (lead ins cut to adds and keep his mouth moving) Mad Dog would chime in and do his thing he way only he can, have fun, keep us laughing and smiling .then, each morning they would call Phil with some project he is looking into or wants to comment on, or as tie breaker, or even occasionally as referee .

Radio is a medium where you can talk at length to explain a thought and conversate. It is easier for some and feels more natural as opposed to jamming in a complete thought in a few words when you only have about 15-20 seconds to say it before the PBP man has to set up the next play.

Simms was a better TV analyst in his earlier years

Yup agree, he was fine in the past - there was one game last season, forget which, where he seemed completely lost, as if he's done zero prep before the game. Love the guy, obviously, so maybe holding him to a higher standard, but he's often sounded really bad on TV IMO

Mad Dog and a few other guys today.

Boomer, Mad Dog, Phil plus the regulars would be a great AM show.

Schmooze should take Francessars spot. Schmooze is the best, tied with Mad Dog basically.

I always liked Mad Dog far better than Francesser, Francesser has no real humor, very little empathy or brother factor.

Schmooze is the best? Are you serious? I've always wondered how WFAN didn't get sued for putting him on the air for the overnight and causing listeners to fall asleep at the wheel. Seems like a nice enough guy, but easily the most boring host on radio other than maybe Richard Neer.

LOL, I have said the same thing. How did he even get a job in radio. Seriously, who listened to his audition tape and said this guy is who we want to hire. He can make you fall asleep.

is very good. Not sure how much she knows about the NBA though. Funny thing is Boomer and Carton were talking( probably joking) about her taking over for Mike. Boomer mentions that the gig she has with the NFL network is better. I'm not sure about that though.

He isn't going to wake up at 3AM to host a morning radio show. He doesn't need the money (we hope!) and he does not need the hassle. Not to mention its another career step backwards. NFL QB - lead NFL analyst - morning radio host?

is in the lead for Francesa's job. He was on for a long stretch this summer and did very well.

I have no idea who's in play for Carton's spot, but I'm taking a guess it's going to be a guy who knows sports, but more of a pop culture shock jock like Carton.

demographics:

1. hardcore sports fanatics, the types that gamble, go to sports clubs when they can, want to be all macho and tough.

2. various random people who follow a team or two, or their cities teams, and just like to hear talk radio as opposed to music during the commute ......and whom are just simply sick of both Bloomberg (reminds one too much of ones money troubles) and NPR (same old narrative over and over again).

I would think that WFAN possibly makes a big mistake just looking towards group 1, with the regular crew, whereas guys like Mad Dog (unique, truly zany not faking it), Boomer (mr nice guy)and The Schmooz (funny, mellow self depreciating wordsmith) might actually appeal to group B. Whereas we may overestimate the size of group A via the usual fellas.

You would think so.

Considering it's something a couple of his own kids deal with and something he even had/has himself, this is really disturbing.

Quote:
Internal Revenue Service records show the Tic Toc Stop non-profit has raised more than $1 million since Carton — who was suspended from his sports-talk radio job following his arrest Wednesday — founded it in 2013 to “fight against Tourette Syndrome.”

Carton and two of his four kids suffer from the condition.

But nearly all the cash raised has been spent on something other than Tourette syndrome, including a series of golf outings, galas and other fund-raising events.

Quote:
In its IRS filings, Tic Top Stop lists two unexplained “contributions” totaling $103,390 made in 2013-’14. Even if that entire amount went to treatment or research that would account for less than 10 percent of what the charity has taken in, the filings reveal.

She is, by a wide margin, the best and that includes the current hosts. She knows her shit, is great in interviews, and a real journalist. When the Penn St. story broke, she was doing daily spots on Francessa's show and was the only reporter on TV or radio who seemed to be unearthing new information daily and actually being tough on PSU and Paterno.

I see Kellerman's name a lot here. Seriously? He may be the best boxing guy on the planet. But, he knows next to nothing about any other sport. When he had his own show on ESPN over a decade ago he made things up all the time and tried to pass off his fake observations and his asinine opinions as fact. He was like listening to Cowherd light. He would make up stats about baseball all the time that most fans knew were BS at first listen. I never liked him on radio, but you won't find a more knowledgeable boxing guy around.

I don't think it's quite as binary as you make it out to be, but even accepting your premise, I think what you're missing is that the goal is to reel in group 2 without alienating group 1. Somers might resonate with group 2, but he'd turn much of group 1 off. And whether you happen to agree or not, typically morning shows need a bit of energy (think of it as audio caffeine), which is something that Somers lacks, big time. There's almost no chance Somers is even considered, no matter how much of a fan of his you might be.

And Russo isn't coming back - he's making big money at Sirius (again, just because you're not that familiar with it doesn't mean it's not a huge platform). And even if he did come back - in some magical, fictional, alternate universe - he's not coming back for the morning show.

As I said before, I find it hard to believe Boomer knew nothing. He spends a lot of time with Caton and Carton is the type of idiot and scumbag who would brag about stuff like this. He is constantly trying to cash his little celebrity to get stuff for himself.

When the first started, Boomer seemed to work very hard at distancing himself from Carton on and off the air. I don't know if Carton wore him down, but Boomer seemed to do a lot more off the air with Carton the last few years and seems to laugh along with him on the air a lot more.

By no means do I think Boomer is involved in any wrongdoing. But, I would be shocked if he didn't know anything about at least some of what is coming out.

I don't think Boomer was involved for a second, but I wouldn't be so sure he didn't know. People who gamble away money like that have a tendency to hit up everyone around them for loans, and Boomer's got deep pockets.
