same here. Sometimes I just hate sports haha
Its funny the same thought kept going through my head from the 7th inning on. I kept thinking if somehow we got all 9 out we wouldn't have to face him again. I never though we'd do it, but we got 8 in a row and then boom...When a guy like Machado is on a roll like this he can just be a monster, no real way to pitch him. Schoop behind him is putting up MVP #'s too.
Not at all being political, but the similarities in Steinbrenner and Trump's management style and rigid personality seem very similar.
IMO, the signing of Jimmy Key was 1 of the seminal moments in the turnaround of the franchise. For 2 years, he was the best starting pitcher they had since Guidry.
That just about nails it. Basically he was a diehard fan with deep deep pockets running the franchise. You wouldn't want that person being the GM and making day to day player personnel decisions, but sure as hell don't mind him being the owner.
At least it wasn't some scrub that hit it. Those are the absolute worst. Getting beat by a top talent like Machado happens sometimes.
What angers me more is that they couldn't take on more runs against the Orioles pen - Ubaldo Jimenez?? Seriously?!?! - and the Orioles got that total horseshit run in the first, which was the difference in the game.

It was definitely one of them. I'm not a big fan of Buck Showalter's, but I do give him and Stick credit for the way they rebuilt the team. They got rid of bad actors like Mel Hall and brought in serious, low-key pros like Key, Boggs, O'Neill, and Mike Stanley. Totally changed the culture of the team. They also emphasized working the count and getting on base long before it became a league-wide obsession.

Agreed, that was a great signing. Also I though the other free agency turning point was Coney coming back in '96. We got him as a rental in '95 and you really got the sinking feeling the wheels were coming off the wagon after that debacle in Seattle, George flying off the handle and getting rid of Buck and hiring Torre in a move everyone though was crazy. Coney was very close to walking, I forget the team was it Boston? at the last second he chose the Yanks and you just felt it all fell into place after that. People look back and think '96 was seamless but they were really in flux that off season before '96.
And you're right, I forgot about Stanley leaving. At the time, I was furious about them letting him go to sign Girardi.
I didn't hear Susan's version today, but isn't the gist of it the Boss told Stick to trade Bernie, so Stick lied and told him he couldn't trade him bc nobody wanted him?
Now that's a lesson in how to navigate working for a tough owner!
Incredible to think of the impact he had, even beyond the actual trades he made.
Also, good to see Kahnle throw some strikes and have a 1,2,3 inning.
That blown save is starting to get my goat, now. Damn it. Shooting themselves in the foot.
Outside of the bullpen struggling more than expected I feel like the team is almost right where it should be. And I think things will even out by the end of this month. The schedule isn't easy but the yanks play a lot of games at home. I think they get to 90 wins. That would be terrific. There have been about ten god awful losses this season but they keep getting off the mat. Love this team.
PS judge seems to be heating up. Better at bats lately. And he's been walking the entire time which is a huge sign that this isn't a permanent swoon.
He still would have finished the sixth except for the Gregorius error.
Don't think he has upper tier stuff but its pretty darn good: and he is a smart pitcher who does not give in. Can lead to some walks and high pitch counts on hitters. He is a bull dog who looks like a solid 6 inning guy.
Thank God for Gray otherwise Garcia starts and that is ugly
Scratching my head a bit on the need to pitch Green up nicely. He needs next two games off

I think Gray has better stuff than he has shown. He continues to nibble more than i've seen in the past.
Good W all around.
Said cc sabathia is one of the best/nicest people in baseball. Spoke really highly of cano as well- random but nice to hear- go yanks
Manager wise said Francona stood out as a great guy
