about Bernie blowing that game in Texas in '93 and George wanting him shipped out of town. Lol don't get me wrong I love the Boss and the good far outweighed the bad but its stories like that that get forgotten when everyone waxes poetic about him decades later...

Its funny the same thought kept going through my head from the 7th inning on. I kept thinking if somehow we got all 9 out we wouldn't have to face him again. I never though we'd do it, but we got 8 in a row and then boom...When a guy like Machado is on a roll like this he can just be a monster, no real way to pitch him. Schoop behind him is putting up MVP #'s too.
I think the people old enough to remember pre-suspension Stein
Greg from LI : 9/7/2017 2:50 pm : link
remember how cringeworthy his actions could be. He's such a fascinating character because he was a man of such extremes. His obsession with winning produced a bunch of championships, and he'd spend whatever it took, but his win-now compulsions drove a whole bunch of horribly self-defeating decisions that drove the team into the ground by 1990. He was petty and vindictive, yet could also be very generous and forgiving.

Not at all being political, but the similarities in Steinbrenner and Trump's management style and rigid personality seem very similar.
Bill Madden told a story about how Stick yelled at Steinbrenner
shockeyisthebest8056 : 9/7/2017 2:54 pm : link
for giving his son in law credit for signing Jimmy Key when it was really Stick's decision.

IMO, the signing of Jimmy Key was 1 of the seminal moments in the turnaround of the franchise. For 2 years, he was the best starting pitcher they had since Guidry.

That just about nails it. Basically he was a diehard fan with deep deep pockets running the franchise. You wouldn't want that person being the GM and making day to day player personnel decisions, but sure as hell don't mind him being the owner.

At least it wasn't some scrub that hit it. Those are the absolute worst. Getting beat by a top talent like Machado happens sometimes.

What angers me more is that they couldn't take on more runs against the Orioles pen - Ubaldo Jimenez?? Seriously?!?! - and the Orioles got that total horseshit run in the first, which was the difference in the game.
Machado seems very talkative

It was definitely one of them. I'm not a big fan of Buck Showalter's, but I do give him and Stick credit for the way they rebuilt the team. They got rid of bad actors like Mel Hall and brought in serious, low-key pros like Key, Boggs, O'Neill, and Mike Stanley. Totally changed the culture of the team. They also emphasized working the count and getting on base long before it became a league-wide obsession.

Agreed, that was a great signing. Also I though the other free agency turning point was Coney coming back in '96. We got him as a rental in '95 and you really got the sinking feeling the wheels were coming off the wagon after that debacle in Seattle, George flying off the handle and getting rid of Buck and hiring Torre in a move everyone though was crazy. Coney was very close to walking, I forget the team was it Boston? at the last second he chose the Yanks and you just felt it all fell into place after that. People look back and think '96 was seamless but they were really in flux that off season before '96.
plus the 1995 team was largely a veteran, mercenary kind of team
Greg from LI : 9/7/2017 3:05 pm : link
Outside of Bernie and Pettitte, they didn't have much in the way of emerging stars. Yeah, Mo was there, but at that point he was nothing more than a kid who struggled as a starter and was banished to the pen. Donnie retired. Showalter was fired, which I didn't mind given the way he bungled Game 5, but Joe Torre was a retread loser of a manager at that point. Their hired gun closer, Wetteland, was horrific in the ALDS. Plenty of uncertainty going into 1996.
Yep and Mike Stanley who had had such a breakout in '95 left
Stu11 : 9/7/2017 3:10 pm : link
and Joe brought in Girardi who was looked at as a big time hitting downgrade at the spot. Of course the other side of the argument was he was an excellent defensive catcher and pitch caller. Yea forgot about Mattingly retiring. That Tino trade may have been one of Stick's best ever. He identified him as a budding star and Seattle with all their young stars that had to get paid felt he was expendable. Getting Jeff Nelson thrown into that deal was huge. All of that for the immortal Sterling Hitchcock.
Hitchcock plus Russ Davis
Greg from LI : 9/7/2017 3:15 pm : link
Who was a pretty good prospect at the time but was blocked by Boggs. I remember how Tino got off to a terrible start in '96 and the home crowd was booing the hell out of him game after game.

And you're right, I forgot about Stanley leaving. At the time, I was furious about them letting him go to sign Girardi.
Holliday just looks like a different hitter since he came back
Stu11 : 9/7/2017 3:18 pm : link
he was not right at all when he came back after the all star break.

I didn't hear Susan's version today, but isn't the gist of it the Boss told Stick to trade Bernie, so Stick lied and told him he couldn't trade him bc nobody wanted him?

Now that's a lesson in how to navigate working for a tough owner!
They granted my wish

Tacking on more runs....9-1 now.
Along those lines
Kyle in NY : 9/7/2017 4:30 pm : link
In spring training 1996, when Steinbrenner and his advisors were pushing to possibly send Jeter back down to AAA and trade Mariano for a SS replacement, Stick essentially backed George off the ledge and talked him out of it.

Incredible to think of the impact he had, even beyond the actual trades he made.

Also, good to see Kahnle throw some strikes and have a 1,2,3 inning.

Wasn't an able to tune in
UConn4523 : 9/7/2017 7:01 pm : link
but how does Gray get an 8-1 lead and not get 6 full innings minimum? Was he being squeezed?
Both teams blew leads in this series
djm : 9/7/2017 7:33 pm : link
At least the yanks took 2-3.

Outside of the bullpen struggling more than expected I feel like the team is almost right where it should be. And I think things will even out by the end of this month. The schedule isn't easy but the yanks play a lot of games at home. I think they get to 90 wins. That would be terrific. There have been about ten god awful losses this season but they keep getting off the mat. Love this team.

PS judge seems to be heating up. Better at bats lately. And he's been walking the entire time which is a huge sign that this isn't a permanent swoon.
Gray threw close to half of his pitches in the 5th and 6th.
manh george : 9/7/2017 7:41 pm : link
Despite not giving up any earned runs, he was losing the strike zone, and getting fouled off a lot.

He still would have finished the sixth except for the Gregorius error.
Btw, about Tuesday...
manh george : 9/7/2017 7:45 pm : link
yeah, it was a remarkably shitty loss. Not an excuse, but a reason: the ultra-late arrival Sunday night after the Boston game. They made it through the Monday game after a slow start, but as the announcers pointed out on Monday, it is often the second game after a late arrival like that where the fatigue sets in.
Gray came out of the shoot strong.
xman : 9/7/2017 10:52 pm : link
Threw 33 pitches through 3. Sizzling. Fifth inning wore on him . 25 pitches. That is a killer for the diminutive Gray.

Don't think he has upper tier stuff but its pretty darn good: and he is a smart pitcher who does not give in. Can lead to some walks and high pitch counts on hitters. He is a bull dog who looks like a solid 6 inning guy.

Thank God for Gray otherwise Garcia starts and that is ugly

Scratching my head a bit on the need to pitch Green up nicely. He needs next two games off

I think Gray has better stuff than he has shown. He continues to nibble more than i've seen in the past.

Good W all around.
It was nice to see the offense score some runs for Gray, too.
