NFT: Network question re: Powerline adapter

bigblue12 : 9/8/2017 10:55 am
So I am going to be finishing our basement in the next couple of months and need to extend the wifi from the top floor corner into the basement so the boy can play his xbox and we can stream Netflix, etc in the basement. I think the powerline adapter will be the best option for us. I have been looking at a few and it appears as if the TP link AV2000 is a highly rated one. The question that I have is, it seems as if there are some that also have wifi extenders built in? Is that a good idea or should I just stick with the powerline adapter. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance and Go Giants!
That's up to you

So long as you get a powerline adapter that's AV2 compliant (which the one you linked is), that's as good as you'll get on the powerline side. Whether you want to extend the WiFi network at that point is a matter of choice. I would suggest if you can, keep the console on the wired ethernet since your performance will be better regardless.
Had similar issue

and hope to fully resolve this weekend. Multi-level townhouse isn't great for wifi, but had an extender for a bit that seemed okay. When I wanted better internet service for streaming, I added the TP-Link AV500 and it's been great for Netflix and PSNow. What I don't have is the great wifi in the upper level. But I think I can resolve that coming out of the second port of the TP with a separate wireless router. I imagine it will be better than just a wifi extender.

Should be, as long as you don't buy an entry level access point. Get something decent with a couple of antennas and it should perform better.

You can also consider one of those multi AP solutions that Google and Netgear make. They're expensive (they both tend to go on sale for around $300 on a regular basis), and have 3 APs that spread out throughout a multi level home to provide consistent, single SSID wireless throughout.
I am noticing that they have

powerline adapters but also have powerline adapter wifi kits where the 2nd unit is also an extender. I am assuming there is no downside to having the extender built in?
We use the phicomm 500mbps

The thing works like a champ for our streaming as well by desktop in the basement. I could be wrong but I believe we paid around 40 bucks for a set? Have been using them for 2 years now with zero issue's.
