Hurricane Irma to threaten Florida Giants' fans

allstarjim : 9/8/2017 5:37 pm
Welp guys, after a long off-season and suffering through meaningless preseason games, with much excitement, the season has arrived! And the start of it is with the hated division rival Cowboys...a must-watch game.

Except, in a cruel twist of fate, those of us in certain parts of Florida are very likely to lose our power right around game time. In the Tampa area, we are preparing to get our hunkering on. A local meteorologist said that the worst weather should begin at about 8:00pm Sunday night. Great. Thanks.

And while many of you may say..."get some perspective, guy...this storm has killed and people have lost, and will lose everything," well, yeah, I know that, and that's very sad. But me being able to watch the game isn't going to change ANY of that, k? And yes, I'm concerned about friends and family in the impact zone. But we've had time to prepare, and the storm's coming no matter what, but so is the game... did they have to be at the same time? Homes can be rebuilt, things can be replaced, but I can't watch this game live without power! Anyway, if any of you can make a DVD for any of us Giants' Irma refugees, I will owe you one. Thanks!
Something tells me this isn't going to go well lol

As a Cape Coral resident myself right now I couldn't give two craps about any football game. My sons out there with the national guard and within a day and a half we went from 60 mile an hour gusts to having our asses handed to us so forgive me if I don't feel bad if you don't get to watch the game Sunday night

To go to my Mom's in Spring Hill. I'm worried about the storm, but I don't want to miss our first game. I was reading a little bit ago that it's gonna be in my area around 2am on Sunday.

Jim - If you are worried about missing it send me your email and I'll get you a stream you can watch on your phone.
Might have been better to cut the prologue and just go with this:

If you're really in the storm's path, I don't think you're going to be thinking about watching football for a while afterward. Stay safe, and good luck.

I'm in West Palm and if told to evacuate will shelter at a nearby elementary school. I drove by today and it looks real solid with no visible windows. I have 3 neighbors that may need help so I'll take them in at my place and bring them with me if I leave. I just downloaded the app thanks to your suggestion so I'll let you know how we make out. Stay safe and good luck everyone!

Longboat buttoned up?

Maybe my priorities are all messed up

But watching the Giants game is my main concern. I have food, water, generator, and gas. Prepared to be without power for a month.

Weather channel has winds of 123mph at 8pm Sunday and lasting into Monday morning. My family will be in a safe room watching the game on NFL mobile. It will feel a lot better dealing with Monday if the Giants are 1-0. Go Big Blue!
If you have Verizon cell service
GiantsFanInFL : 9/8/2017 8:35 pm : link
Use the NFL mobile app. As a Verizon customer you get all nationally televised games and local games.

deserves his own game thread. And I'd love to see pictures of this safe room. Prayers and best wishes to you and everyone in Irma's path.
I'm on the east coast of Florida

in Port Saint Lucie; We made it through Mathew last year without losing power but I doubt we will be that lucky this year with Irma. If the power is gone by game time I can always Face Time a friend while I am in my safe room and watch. I have plenty of chargers for my phone as long as the phone tower does not go out. In fact this would be such a welcoming relief than just sitting in a closet with my dog and a lantern.

But I do a daily LIVE show, not a podcast of music from the 60's, 70's & 80's coast to coast by request and I plan on doing a Music Marathon starting at 12 noon until I lose power tomorrow. So for any Florida residents and beyond who would like to listen to some Rock & Roll while getting IRMA updates, please tune in!

Be safe everyone....

Only room with no windows. Haven't missed a Giants game since 94 and I don't plan to to Sunday night.

CTC--

Up until about 4:00 this afternoon I figured I'd spend the night Sunday at a hotel by I-75 and head back into Longboat on Monday.

Now I'm thinking there won't be a Longboat Key to go back to on Monday.

Probably better to take Alligator Alley or 595 and come East. Irma looks to be going up I-75.
Eye wall appears to be making landfall now
DennyInDenville : 9/8/2017 10:39 pm : link
Over Cuba

This girl should weaken hopefully..

The water is sooo warm but those mountains will knock her down to cat 3 I hope
Winds now up to 170 sustained
DennyInDenville : 9/8/2017 10:45 pm : link
However landfall in 40 mins

Cuba will weaken it a lot hopefully
Denny
GruningsOnTheHill : 9/8/2017 11:32 pm : link
I don't know what to think. Makes sense to me, but I'm guessing that the meteorologists have taken that into account already. They are saying it is supposed to kick back up to a Category 5.

I look around the bedroom now...and I'm going to lose my house. Absolutely surreal.
I have family in Miami they are gonna bunker down
DennyInDenville : 9/8/2017 11:39 pm : link
Also have family in Sarasota I'm more worried about at this point with the west track ..

Key west looks like it might change forever. Really hoping Cuba weakens it because the water in between Cuba and the south tip of Florida is 87-90 degrees and could act as jet fuel I fear

It's scary how Cuba hasn't weakened it more already .. hoping the early morning advisory we see the winds knocked down to 115 before it hits that super warm water

One computer model has it going west out over the gulf and into Louisiana but highly highly highly unlikely as all other models show a landfall around Marco Island
However it's looking like Miami might get lucky
DennyInDenville : 9/8/2017 11:40 pm : link
And not get the brunt.

Let's see what happens
Was just reading
moespree : 9/8/2017 11:48 pm : link
That while Cuba should weaken it, there's now thought it is going to slow when it reemerges into the ocean allowing for strengthening and reorganizing again. That is supposedly very unusual and continues to be an historical and trend breaking storm.

I really hope for the best for all of you in the area.
Thanks everyone for the well wishes
allstarjim : 9/9/2017 12:44 am : link
My wife is very concerned. We live in Brandon, just about a mile or so east of I-75. Obviously, she is getting more and more freaked out. I have begun boarding up the windows and will finish in the morning.

No doubt we are going to have some bad weather. I appreciate all of you who pray to do so for us, and those who don't for your positive thoughts. Really concerned with GruningsOntheHill and all those near the landfall area. Please get somewhere safe.

I'll try to remember to check in with BBI on Monday if I can get cell service.

Thanks to those that mentioned the Verizon NFL app. We may have to do that. Although not sure about the wisdom of using cell battery up during a hurricane on the game...but what the hell. Maybe we'll get really lucky.

In any case, Big Rick thanks for the offer. My email is allstarjim30@gmail.com. I'll just use the Verizon stream though...I have Verizon.

Eli4life, I was in the National Guard for many years. What unit is he in? FL Guard? If so, may know him. I also heard Christie is sending the NJ Guard here to help which is great.

I did a lot of Hurricane relief duty in my years in the Guard. Your son will be safe, please pass along my thanks for his service.
Big Rick we made the decision tonight to head

to Spring Hill as well. Looks like higher elevation compared to where we are west of 19. We got a mandatory evacuation now at my folks house. Doesn't look all too terrible by the time it gets here but this storm has my respect. And I'm more comfortable just getting to a new spot earlier before the S hits the fan.

This will be a Giants Cowboys game I'll never forget. I imagine I'll be tuning in on the AM dial. I feel so out of the loop for opening day. It's been non stop prep since last Sunday.

We were planning on riding it out
JFIB : 9/9/2017 1:59 am : link
At our home on Pine Island just west of Cape Coral until the projection this morning put the storm right on top of us with storm surge up to 12 feet. My girlfriend and I and out dog and cat hit the road to hunker down with friends in the north east part of the state where it will be considerably calmer.

Still bummed about the game though. Hope to watch on the Verizon app.
We are breathing a collective

Sigh of relief in West Palm Beach, after seeing the latest models. I do worry about our bretheran to the West though.

In a previous thread the Capt. Said he was going to ride it out in Key West. I hope he thought otherwise, and was able to get to a safer place.

Watching the Giants on Sunday, will be a welcome change. We have been on a rollercoaster all week, and every station was spaghetti model, and satellite imagery.

Stay safe Florida. Go Blue.
Well this

isn't good. Looking to load the horse trailer up and head towards the east coast. The house has been good for us for the last 22 years.

Going to suck leaving the horses behind. The dogs and cats will come with.

Going to be spending the morning figuring what memories to take with us.
I'm in St. Augustine, talk about priorities
Dr. D : 9/9/2017 9:47 am : link
I told my 9 yr old son that if the rain and winds get bad during the Giants game, I need him to take one for the team and get on the roof, keep the satellite dish dry and keep it from blowing away.

The look on his face was pretty funny; I don't know if he thought I was kidding or not.

Anywho, I feel bad for those in line for bigger hit. Hope everyone stays safe.
We've been praying

for a few days for those more in the path.

Really feel bad for St. Maarten, Key West and the other spots that are taking direct hits. And those in SW FL, probably should GTFO.

Need it to keep going west for about 100 miles
Leaving Cocoa Beach

For the main-land in Melbourne to stay at a friends house.

It is all shuttered up and sturdy as a female Hungarian power lifter. yes, have plenty of gas and a generator.

There will be 5-10 of us there and have enough water, food, beer, ice for 30 I would imagine.

Many of my friends left this area for the west coast and they almost convinced me to commit on Thursday.

Though I won't be in my condo, which is about 1/4 mile from the ocean ( barricaded nicely with high rise condos and a shopping center in front and across A1A, Not worried about water surge 3rd floor) but will most certainty lose power.

After this week, if that's what you said would be the potential worst, I would have signed up for that- obviously.

My thoughts turn to those in south, southwest and all along the coast up to Tampa.

Holy crap. Storm turned too far west so we followed mandatory evacuation and abandoned ship again. Decided to pack up tonight at 8pm and drive south to a hotel in FT Lauderdale, seemed like it would be manageable here. Plus no other hotels in the state. Pulled a 250 mile end around! Drove across rt60 east and then south down the turnpike. 3 car caravan. Girlfriend and dog in her car, my older parents and their dog, and me in the truck. Trusted in the radar and while we drove through a few nasty weather bands it wasn't terrible. Nerve wracking but manageable. Thank you God for seeing us here safely.

Now pretty safe now (and with a much needed rum drink!!) 40' high at the Hilton! Girlfriend found the hotel, but I figured it was a crappy motel. I don't think a Hilton has ever seen all the crap I dragged inside. 2 big fishing coolers full of food (and of course leaking out the bottom, now in the tub), 2 propane tanks, Weber tailgate grill, dog crate and his bedding/blankets, lots of suit cases and bags. Dumped 35 gals of gas into our cars under the front entrance canopy while it was raining sideways. Didn't want it stolen in the night. Tommorow and Monday I'll be grilling in the parking lot.

Of course in the middle of all the madness today my girlfriend comes running to me crying. She found a baby squirrel under a tree and HAS to save it. So we put it in a plastic storage bin and I thought we had another pet to drag along. Amazingly she found a vet, and close as to not waste precious gas, that was happy to rescue it. We named it Irma.

Hope all our Florida BBI crew is safe tonight and prepared. Sending out a prayer for all you boys and your families.

Terrible, terrible, surreal feeling stowing your entire life and just taking what you can. On top of everything else we have 2 bins of all our old photos. Lots of "stuff" you can replace with money. It's those memories that are priceless. Hope your house is spared and the animals find a way brother. Awful feeling walking away from everything you own. Made me physically sick to my stomach just before we left Marathon Wednesday when the reality of the situation kicked in.

Side note. I brought my barometer along for the trip, reading 982 currently. Conditions has been getting worse since checking in at 2am. Squalls rolling through every few minutes now. Windows rattling and whistling but ok. Had to turn off emergency alerts on the phone because of constant tornado warnings.
Thanks for checking in.

I told my wife to go ahead and take her and the dog to my Mom's in Orlando. She left at 3:45AM...neither of us were getting sleep anyway. She made it ok, just got off the phone with her a few minutes ago. I got gifted a couple more boards of plywood and am going to board up by slider this morning. After that I think my nephew and I are here for the duration.

We are pretty close to the projected path. Obviously, we still don't know, but one thing is certain, we are going to get waxed pretty hard regardless of where the eye passes.
Goodluck Jim.

Huge relief knowing the women and dog are safe. If anything hopefully it comes during the day. Would be great if this storm just keeps going west. I feel like there are a whole lot of people on the west coast that are not prepared for a cat 2+.

Don't forget to fill your washing machine for non drinking water. And anything you really want to keep dry lock in the dishwasher.
Thanks for checking in

I hope it doesn't pull a Frances. NHC has it circling itself and turning west. Right now I don't like the look of that...

BBiK so far only rain and gusty winds in Martin County.

We managed to get tickets on one of the last flights to anywhere out of Orlando Int'l just before it closed yesterday--greetings from Cleveland, OH--and as the eye of this bomb the size of Alaska is supposed to pass right over my house with 115mph winds tonight, I am anticipating that I will discover in the morning that all of my material possessions are a carry-on duffel bag, 3 shirts/3 pants, and my laptop.

Surreal.
