Shepard looked really good last night..

EricJ : 9/11/2017 8:43 am
he made a lot of tough catches. A few of those he was not in an optimal situation either and got blasted by the defender. He was possibly one of the only positives you can take away from what we saw.
he was one of the few bright spots

i have no idea what happened to Marshall
Scandrick made Marshall his bitch.

That's what happened to him.

I'm thinking (hoping) that he can be a good #2 receiver, obviously not a #1

I think he's totally

overrated. No elusiveness, little speed. He's got good hands and Eli seems to trust him.
Good slot guy
UberAlias : 9/11/2017 8:56 am : link
Not an outside WR.

We knew that going into the season. Marshall was doubled all game. HE wont be with OBJ in the game.
Agree ....
Beer Man : 9/11/2017 9:16 am : link
But Shepard is a stick mover, who is never going to be the #1 receiver, and not the type of threat that keeps defensive coordinators up at night.
Making a lot of tough catches is not always a great thing
UberAlias : 9/11/2017 9:19 am : link
Gotta give your QB some easy throws every once in a while. Lewis was the one guy getting separation last night.
Shepard looks like a good 3rd WR
chuckydee9 : 9/11/2017 9:30 am : link
I don't see any quickness or elusiveness or ability to get open against top 15 CBs.. He is a poor mans Edelman.. No one is going to be scared of him.. in todays offense you do need players like him and he is valuable.. but if He is your number 2 and the number 1 gets injured.. you will see a lot of 4 yard catches from him when 6 yards are needed..
He is basically
McNally's_Nuts : 9/11/2017 9:50 am : link
Steve Smith with less speed.

He's a good player, but he's massively overrated on this site.
Not as elusive as I thought he would be....
Dry Lightning : 9/11/2017 10:00 am : link
but he is so tough. Good kid. You have to be careful of where you throw it to him though, because his stature makes him fumble prone.

That is exactly what I was thinking - reminds me a ton of Steve Smith. I like his toughness, but I thought he was billed as a very elusive guy. Maybe OBJ coming back will free him up a bit so he has some space to work.
Maybe I'm being too hard on Shepard
BigBlueWhale : 9/11/2017 11:42 am : link
and I don't blame him for the Giants picking him in the 2nd round, but he's not a particularly good player.

He was billed as a 1st round talent that, due to his height, slipped to the 2nd. Dominant blocker. Similar to the Panthers Steve Smith.

He's small and slow. That's a bad combination. I've never seen a guy built so low to the ground with such little elusiveness. It's almost amazing how bad he is after the catch.

I don't agree at all. If every player on this offense looks like shit, what does that tell you? Shepard would be great in GB, NE, Atlanta, etc. he'd have open space and would be used a ton. We can't do that since we can run or block. What are you hoping Shepard does when hes swarmed by defenders since there's no deep threat or good enough blocking for a deep threat?
UConn
BigBlueWhale : 9/11/2017 11:48 am : link
Yes, we disagree. No big deal. I agree the rest of the offense is a joke but there is room to make plays as Odell demonstrates. Shepard does nothing with the ball, nothing.

He even said the same thing during camp. He was trying to work on his YAC skills. Unfortunately those are the type of skills you either have, or you don't. It's hard to work on YAC. It's about vision, instincts and God given ability.

I don't like to criticize Shepard because he clearly cares and is busting his ass out there. I criticize the front office for the pick, he is not nearly as explosive or difficult to cover as many of the slot WRs in the NFL, including Crowder and Beasley in our own division.

Even with space he is not elusive at all and has average to poor acceleration. He couldn't hold NYG Smith's or Edelman's jock. He has good hands and runs good routes.
When did Shepard turn slow?
jcn56 : 9/11/2017 11:52 am : link
Am I remembering this wrong, or wasn't he a sub 4.5 guy? He's not a burner, but he's not exactly running around in cement shoes out there either.
Switch Edelman and Shepard
UConn4523 : 9/11/2017 12:26 pm : link
and tell me if both players look the same. Come on, you are comparing the offenses of two completely different teams, on of which replaces guys at will at the skill positions with little or zero downside.

Julian Edelman would be a fraction of the player on this current Giants roster.
It's hard to accuse Shepard of getting no separation when
Section331 : 9/11/2017 1:08 pm : link
he's playing the slot, there is a lot of traffic inside, and without Odell, there was no one on the outside to draw safety help. Shep was terrific last night, and will be even better with Odell back in the line-up.
He's got plenty of speed and explosion.
KWALL2 : 9/11/2017 1:28 pm : link
He's a strong runner and quick.

He's underrated here and everywhere else. He'll be a very good player for a long time. And he isnt just a slot guy. He can play on the outside.

Exactly !! I was just going to say the same thing. Plus, when our OL sucks so bad the defense can drop someone else back while rushing just 4 thus clogging the slot area even more.
...
BrettNYG10 : 9/11/2017 1:51 pm : link
I think Shepard can be a good #3 option. With Odell and hopefully Engram better options, I think he'll be a good player here for a long-time.
My assumption is that Eli and Marshall

aren't on the same page yet.
I don't know why
Bill L : 9/11/2017 3:35 pm : link
probably because of the fumble in preseason,

but every time someone manhandles him after his catch, I think the ball is going to be snatched out of his hands.

I just can't agree, which is OK. I had higher expectations for him, but he just makes nobody miss and takes a beating. He's an injury waiting to happen
Maybe there is too much hype when we draft these guys..
EricJ : 9/11/2017 4:08 pm : link
setting up a false set of expectations...
I want to make sure I am clear on this...
EricJ : 9/11/2017 4:19 pm : link
I just said he looked good last night. I still think Reese missed again with this draft pick. Michael Thomas was taken later that round by New Orleans....after we selected Shepard.
I don't think that's unreasonable
UConn4523 : 9/11/2017 4:23 pm : link
but going back to my initial point, does Michael Thomas even help us yesterday?

No, not at all. Not unless he can play the tackle position.

It looked like this thread ended up turning into a discussion as to whether Shepard is good, over rated, etc.. My point is that once again, talent evaluation is also a huge issue. Let's not make Shepard out to be a guy who is supposed to be a superstar. It was the fans and the front office who hyped him and if they wanted something more, it was sitting right there for them to select when it was their turn to pick.
