NFT: NHL Training Camp Starts This Week

BrettNYG10 : 9/11/2017 11:45 am
Kings open up tomorrow, Rangers first day is on Thursday.

Should be an exciting season of hockey with the Rangers winning the Cup and Tavares playing his final year as an Islander.

How does everyone feel about their team (or teams, in Hudson's case) this year?
Speaking of hockey

I saw this tweet about Jason Pominville and the winter classic, he's back with Buffalo and was in the inaugural winter classic and is in it again this year in NY and nhl.com had a piece on it.

and I found it very un-interesting, but WTF is Crosby wearing? Does he have a bullet proof vest under his uniform? a parka?

this has to be a photo shop right? He looks like the Michelin man.

Only the Canadiens white jerseys are perfect, and only the original 6 minus the Bruins jerseys are tolerable.

alternate jerseys suck and the NHL jerseys in general are mostly awful other than the aforementioned.

I read Drouin will be center. Not sure he's going to fare any better, but I'm looking forward to Drouin and Chucky playing together if they don't deal him and they keep them together. That's the most offensive skill the Canadiens have had together on a line in a decade+

I really wish they retained Lindberg (over Fast/Grabner). I think he could have handled the really tough defensive zone starts the team needs out of a 3C. Hayes is wasted if he's given those starts, IMO. I don't know enough about Andersson to know if he can handle those minutes long-term.

I think Holden's movable, and am still hopeful he can be part of a package to solve the 2C/3C issue if Andersson's not ready.

I think Holden goes during camp. I don't see how he can be kept. There's usually a few September trades.

Given the handful of young dmen (DeAngelo, Pionk, the Russian), I think he sort of has to go. Ideally, two of them shine and Staal is the 7th dman, but I'm doubtful that happens. I think the team will be fine with either Staal/Holden as the 6th guy - but both shouldn't be playing and certainly not on the second pair. I'd 'prefer' Holden over Staal as the sixth guy, but Staal's unmovable.

I also think Holden is a guy that plenty of teams will overvalue as a 4th dman when he's probably just a 6th/7th guy.
Finally some nice banter

I hope no one ruins it and tries to mention the magic words around here. These threads get ruined organically anyway because they become a Rag fan ass grab contest about B prospects that'll be traded in a year anyway. I miss Girardi already.

All kidding aside I'm really having mixed feelings about how often I'll participate in threads this season. I do feel one our main cogs was banned from this site unfairly and I'd like that to be reconsidered.

I see the Islanders are getting zero respect from many major"publications" but hey that's ok. I think they are a better team today. The big thing to watch other than 800lb gorilla (JT) is how the young guys improve and if Barzal can make a big impact right away like rookies have been doing lately. I'm not really worried about the D and G right now although the D depth has taken a bit of a hit. Can they build on the momentum they started last season after the coaching change? The best news we could possibly hear by the end of the calendar year is that the Belmont arena will be built.
Good work, Brett, getting us back to the ice sheet here

A couple of rule changes to be aware of this season, both with the "flow of the game" in mind:

1. NHL teams will no longer be able to call for an offside review without fear of punishment. The NHL will now give teams that fail the offside review a two-minute minor penalty.

Here's the take a deep breath moment for teams (from SBN):
Quote:
Now, coaches will have to strategize more on the use of this challenge. Is it worth putting a team on a penalty kill after looking at a play that might not go in its favor? The spirit of the offside challenge was to get rid of goals like Matt Duchene’s here that are miles offside, but it was often used on calls difficult to discern with the naked eye.

2. No longer will coaches be able to call timeouts after icings. Opposing teams will still be able to, but teams that ice the puck will not be able to rest their defenders.
Not relevant to NHL.....yet
pjcas18 : 9/11/2017 2:56 pm : link
but a new rule in youth hockey this year is a short-handed team can no longer ice the puck. It's treated like an even strength icing.

Not sure how I feel about that yet as a coach, but I feel like the NHL could eventually adopt that rule, if nothing else it should increase scoring.

Yeah, not sure I like that. I think the SH team should get some relief and sending it down the other way is the only real way to replenish players. Especially in multiple man-down situations (ie, 5 on 3s), that'd be brutal if a team couldn't send it down without fear of icing after being trapped for most of a PK. I'd think with that instituted at the pro level, the PP success percentages would increase meaningfully. Like you said, maybe that's what they want and will ultimately be attractive to the NHL.

I've advocated this for years.

1. It will make the penalty more onerous -- hopefully cut down on cheap shots etc.

2. Will probably result in more scoring, which could help the sport gain more of a foothold.

Agree Jay though the USA hockey reasons differ

for now though I've told my kids to still ice it and we'll take the face off, they're only squirts (U10) but they've mostly been playing hockey already for 3 - 4 years and re-coaching stuff like this takes a while.

The rule for now is only up to bantams (U14), but I think it could easily be in high school and NCAA within a few years.

Anyway, the USA hockey reasons for the rule change are they want kids at the under 14 levels to develop more creativity, "problem solving", puck skills, skating, etc.

They feel like taking away icing is a step toward that because players can no longer just slap the puck down the ice, but I, do think it could accomplish what you say too.

I used to ref youth hockey and soccer. There was way more flexibility in the latter. At the younger ages I would get both coached to agree that on an illegal throw-in I would tell the player what s/he did wrong and have another chance. If the second throw was illegal I would give it to the other team.

Youth sports should be fun and learning opportunities. I'm all for rules that strive for that.

I dont have an opinion on him, but him making the roster smacks of a need move. Usually the guys who make the NHL their draft year are top 2-3 picks, super high skill types. Not always, but that's what's normal.

Also, wasnt he considered a bit of a reach? I thought he was expected to go in the teens.

An owner and his GM can't have conversations internally about potential free agents? I don't think this qualifies as tampering. It's just exploring all options.

He's not Auston Matthews or McDavid, not many are, but the thing that could make Andersson ready is his defensive zone play. I saw him in juniors INTL tourneys only and didn't notice his defensive play TBH but everything I read about him says he's a legit two-way center.

The only thing with his speed and skill, even at 18, that would keep him out of an AV system is defense. So if he proves it in rookie/training camp I could see it, but probably as a 3C, not a 1C. Still I think it's a long shot for him, but that's IMO a realistic long shot.

eventually he should be a 1C, but that could take a couple years.

They can do it internally, yes. You can't talk to reporters about it. Qualifies as tampering and the Canucks were fined 10 grand for discussing Stamkos publicly.

Andersson obviously isn't Matthews or McDavid
Kyle in NY : 9/12/2017 2:14 pm : link
But if he can step in and be Sean Couturier (picked 8th overall and came right into the league and put up 27 points with 60% defensive zone starts) that'd be a nice boost. I think he's got a shot to do it, based on everything we hear about being good in his own zone.

Long term, we'd hope for him to develop more offense than Couturier has. But just strictly talking rookie year production, I think that's a good barometer.

agree, at 18 that would be huge.

I just don't like Andersson's size. He's kind of small for the NHL IMO to be great defensively. I mean it's not impossible, but in the latest world juniors showcase his skill was on display, he was one of the better players. Like I said I didn't notice his defense, but against that competition not sure how relevant is, when the Capitals are all 6'3

and this is purely my bias, there are a lot of small players who excel defensively, but they don't usually have the skill of a player like Andersson, unless you count someone like Marchand
Agreed, fuck short people, pj.

27. Hall had a ton of praise for the Islanders’ captain. “After skating with Tavares all summer… not that I didn’t respect him before, but he’s World Class. I always knew that, but his preparation, he’s a professional, the stuff he does on the ice…It’s fun to surround yourself with people like that because it just forces you to raise your game. Even though you’re skating at a community rink at 11 o’clock on a Wednesday, you’re still like, ‘Okay this guy is working on his game and he’s top 10 in the world, I should be there, too.’”

28. Jordan Eberle said he talked to Hall about going from the white-hot spotlight of Edmonton to a quieter locale. “He says it’s a change, but a lot of it is for the good. I’ve been in Edmonton for so long, you get…maybe comfortable is the word. I think it’s good to feel out of that.”

29. Kevin Shattenkirk on the free-agency window: “There’s more gamesmanship than you can prepare yourself for. Teams don’t want to show their cards, and you don’t want to do the same. Playing that game was kind of stressful…The craziest thing was, from the draft leading up (to July 1), I assumed, ‘You’re going to get all these phone calls.’ And, Monday went and Tuesday went and no phone calls.” No one called you? “No one called. Not having gone through this before, there was a little panic. Looking back on it, you understand what teams are trying to do. Make you sweat it out and call them.”

It wasn’t a secret that Shattenkirk wanted to play for the Rangers, but he had to bend to make it work. When did it hit him that his dream was real? Not until after his introductory media conference. “They let me keep the jersey, and I took it to my parents house. My dad came in, saw it and said, ‘Wow, that’s pretty cool.’ We sat there and chatted about it…To see the emotions on their face, being able to give them that feeling and emotion really touched me.”

Torrag : 9/13/2017 4:11 pm : link
He's a 19 years old rookie that hasn't played one minute of North American hockey. Let's tick off the guys that were ready to take that on.

They should have found a way to protect Lindberg in the expansion draft. Actually a similar skillset and physique as Anderson. How long did it take him to get ready? You can argue despite some positives in previous campaigns 2016 was when he ddeserved significant ice time...at age 25. Which is far closer to the norm than let's say oh, 19 years old.

So why then is he being talked up as potentially making this roster? Need and expansion draft mismanagement. That's why.

It's only for Bantam and below (U14, U12, U10, and U8) and it's not for the purpose of increasing scoring (though it may result in that. But increasing the size of the net has zero to do with this rule change.

And, how much is that really going to impact your love of the game?

Do you go to a lot of youth hockey games, have kids in youth hockey or coach youth hockey?

If so, I get USA Hockey's rationale.
