Didn't Like What I Saw from Darian Thompson Last Night

BigBlueWhale : 9/11/2017 12:03 pm
He looked like a deer who got shot in the leg. I was discouraged to see him moving around like that - to me he is clearly still showing the effects of the foot injury.

Did anyone notice the same?

It's far down on the Ugly List from last night, but just another kick in the balls as I watched it unfold.
Watched him a few plays

he did seem slow to recognize plays and get to the ball. Adams was a much better tackler in run support. Hope he improves before he is hurt again.
Yeah, not very good.

But what's Eli Apple's excuse? That dude has the presence of a beach ball out there. People just move through him, and I'll give him a pass on the Witten TD, big size advantage there, but Apple is soft.
Thompson is not a FS

Every draft publication I read considered this guy an in the box Strong Safety because of his lack of speed, lack of quickness, lack of range, and a general inability to change directions. He takes a lot of bad angles and the speed of the pro game will give him trouble. Reese looks at the height & the number of INTs and automatically sees a FS to put next to Collins. Adams is the more sound player at ths point in time and he should start. Next year we should upgrade.
Thompson wasn't good last night

But Apple was much worse. The pass rush was pretty mediocre as well which is understandable going up against that OL.
you

mean the parts where he was chasing receivers from 4 off from where the balls were caught. I'm with you.
He needs time to develop.....

Spags and the coaches like what he offers and he apparently showed enough in pre-season to keep the job he won last year. I'm not passing judgment on him yet. I'll give him this year to get better. In the meantime if he just can be average I'd accept that.
I think Dallas's offense tends to neutralize the free safety.

With extra defenders in the box to contain Elliott, the deep safety is often on an island and has to play conservatively. Elliott's longest run was about ten yards, which most DCs would consider a win.

Another factor is that Prescott very seldom challenges coverage - especially with a safety over the top. (He doesn't need to, and Garrett doesn't want him to.) That's a big reason his TD-INT ratio was so spectacular last year, and it's a big reason ball-hawking safeties are seldom anywhere near his passes.
Eli Apple can cover OK

but I think Fiona Apple would have more of a physical presence against the run and the short passing game.

Hoping he was leery of reinjuring of the ankle. Because you can't teach toughness and this guy looked soft as shit. Reminded me of Deion. Or maybe even Dion.
