The New (McAdoo) Eli

WideRight : 9/11/2017 1:50 pm
The McAdoo inspired Eli is known for a high completion rate, and piss poor YPA. Here's the play-by-play of the last drive when the Giants were down by two scores. Hopefully the cut and paste from nfl.com is legible:

END GAME
NYG 3 DAL 19 Plays: 9 Possession: 1:55

Until this point, Eli was 16/27 for 166 yds. An awful 6.1 YPA. But they stunk, so its to be expected. What followed on the last drive, was worse. He went 8/9 for 54 yards, net 44 because of a holding penalty. BUT HE NEEDED TWO SCORES. So all of that was BS. Increased his completion percentage, but his YPA still stunk against a prevent offense! And he gave his team no chance to win the game. The old Eli would have played to give his team a chance. He still has enough of an arm. And he wasn't afraid of the pick. Is this on Eli, or coaching?
does it matter

Did it seem like Eli had time to go downfield?
I'll take Eli at his word. Its on him.....

But everybody else on that unit better undertand its on them to get better. 3 years in and this OL has only deteriorated. I say he starts the same bunch (depending on how practice goes this week) and if its the same story after the first couple of drives we should start seeing the 'other' players.

It matters because many seem to think that Eli's increased completion rate is a sign of better play, and that he's not part of the problem.

That drive illustrates how his play is worse than the numbers appear, and either he or McAdoo is responsible for the discordance between Eli's perceived play level and the team's.
You can't even begin to evaluate Eli
nicky43 : 9/11/2017 2:04 pm : link
until four of the empty o-line positions get filled! We need 4 decent starters on the o-line, 3 at a minimum.

I do wonder if McAdoo harping on Eli to take better care
Section331 : 9/11/2017 2:09 pm : link
of the ball has led him to be too conservative? Down 2 TD's with 1 minute to go and he's still checking down to Vereen? At some point, you have to let it rip. There has to be a happy medium between taking chances and being too cautious.
Checkdowns

are maddening. Nothing worse than on 3rd and long watching Eli make a 4-6 yard pass to a covered receiver not named Odell. It seems to be the system and it is absolutely infuriating. At least throwing downfield gives the possibility of pass interference.

May suck but are the others open?
I agree

re the last drive (although I defended Eli a lot earlier today). Whether it was his doing or play calling from above, that shit made no sense whatsoever. We're down 2 scores and we're dinking and dunking?! I mean, just inexplicable, indefensible.
The offense has been a part of the problem
jvm52106 : 9/11/2017 4:18 pm : link
for three years now. Yes, three years now. Too many people point to 2015 and say the defense was horrible and that was the problem. While at first glance that is true it also created a false narrative, that the offense was actually pretty good.

The defense was so bad that the Gmen were trailing in games a lot. This led to a lot of passing, against defense trying to prevent scores not yardage. I harped then that the Giants showed a big time lack of consistency and when they need to run the ball or control the clock they couldn't do it.

Now with a good defense, we are seeing just how flawed our offense is (that includes our QB) in that we cannot set tempo, we cannot establish the dominance or even advantage at the LOS and we cannot attack teams down the field. We are a dink and dunk offense with a very weak Oline and an immobile QB who has not been nearly as accurate or good as we have needed.
Eli hasn't looked good in ages.

when it takes 3 completions to net a first down....
How bout that "scoring drive"
bceagle05 : 9/11/2017 4:42 pm : link
to start the third? Fifteen plays, 68 yards or something, and three points - while taking 10 minutes off the clock! Up 16-0, I'm sure Dallas was happy to trade three points for 10 minutes of game time.

Yes, he did. But does it matter? They were down two scores and showing no interest in trying to make it a game, no matter how long the odds were. Going underneath repeatedly just bleeds the clock on behalf of the Cowboys. If you're going to do that, just take a knee and go home.

It looked a little like stat-padding, to be honest.

Down two scores with two minutes left, it doesn't matter! Throw the ball downfield!
You know what?
Gman11 : 9/11/2017 6:15 pm : link
There are too many people that give Eli a free ride.

He makes $20 million a year. For that contract he ought to be able to complete passes more than 5 yards down field, especially when it's 3rd and 8. For that contract, he should be available to avoid the rush. He should be able to attack the other team's weaknesses.

All these excuses about the play calling, the receivers, the offensive line would be fine if he was a Josh McCown. He's not. People think he should be in the Hall of Fame. A HOF QB excels even when the conditions are not ideal.

Triple "G" : 9/11/2017 6:22 pm : link
No better of a QB or any worse since McAdoo took over for Gilbride. Gilbride had a High Risk High Reward System with a lot of down the field passes.

McAdoo has a Low Risk High percentage "Dink Dunk" Offense that reminds me of the Andy Reid And McNabb Eagles Offense.

Eli has better numbers in McAdoo's Offense, it doesn't mean Eli improved. His passing has become 6 yds max so YES his numbers will be better.

This is why "NUMBERS AND STATS" make no sense when comparing QB's on different teams. Te variables are way too high to get a true picture of which QB is better than the next, by Stats numbers and completion percentage. It will never give you a true picture and never ever tell the whole story
I think most of this goes to McAdoo
Matt M. : 9/11/2017 10:34 pm : link
When he was just the OC, Eli had one of his finest seasons as a pro and the offense thrived. Last year and now one game this year, have shown a vastly different offense. The playcalling, I think, sucks. There is never any rhythm to this offense. Last year, we only seemed to score if OBJ took off on his own after a short pass. McAdoo seems to call everything as if it's 3rd and long. He has 2 receivers run 20+ yard slow developing patterns that have no chance of ever being read by the QB. The other 1-2 receivers all seem to run 2-3 yard patterns. This picks up chunks of yardage in 3rd and long when the D is protecting the long first down. But, early in the game the Giants got themselves into 3rd and 3-5 yards, yet still seemed to throw short of the sticks every time. Can we not run one pattern 5-7 yards in those situations?
In other words, these aren't all check downs
Matt M. : 9/11/2017 10:36 pm : link
They are dinking by design. The first read is often those grossly short patterns. This is not the same offense that was moving the ball and scoring a few years ago.
Lastly, don't use the OL as the scapegoat
Matt M. : 9/11/2017 11:10 pm : link
If you recall, McAdoo was brought in specifically to combat poor OL play with the WCO. In his first year, they did just that. Their OL was no better, but their offense was. As HC, he is calling a completely different offense and is grossly predictable to opposing defenses.

I think the jury is still out on McAdoo as a HC, but he clearly can't handle HC and OC at the same time. Why did they even promote Sullivan in the first place?
McAdoo came in with the mission to get Eli's percentage up
#10* : 9/12/2017 2:21 pm : link
and his Int's down. While I agree with addition of utilizing more check downs, imo they are not used properly and are not propelling the offense where and when they should.

The offense is capped. OBJ taking slants to the house and the stout defense saved the team last year. Without OBJ, I don't see it being the case this year.
