Fair catches inside the 10 yard line. We seem to do a lot of

plato : 9/11/2017 4:23 pm
That including what I saw all preseason. As a result we started out in terrible field position. Is there a reason for, or in fact have we abandoned the old "rule" no fair catches at 10 or inside?

This is one reason we had terrible field position all night. Doesn't mean we shouldn't be able to get out of there, but I was wondering is a change in coaching, why it's changed, or even if my comment is correct.
If the returner sees coverage run behind him,

what is he supposed to do? Most of them were around the 10 yard line, which is a better starting spot than inside the 5.

balls that bounce at the 10 will probably- in a high percentage -be able to be downed near the goal line. At the 6 or 7 probably should be let go - it's a judgement call from a good returner
We had terrible field position because our offense

couldn't move the ball 3 yards and our defense wasn't able to force 3 and outs.

Chris Jones had excellent hang time on each of his punts last night and all of them would've easily been downed well inside the 10 yard line. Harris made the correct decision to make those fair catches.

The Giants' best starting field position was their own 25, their average starting field position was their own 16, and they started six of their ten drives inside their own 15. All of the Cowboys' nine drives ended in Giants territory.

That's one of the primary reasons they lost.

There used to be a "10 yard rule" -- if you're at the 10 or lower, let the ball go. But that doesn't work if the gunners are down there waiting. Then you have to catch it to keep it from being downed at the 1 or 2.

His point being: The Cowboy gunners were running free and so the returners had to call fair catch rather than let the ball go. Punt return team fail.
Sound choices by Harris

who looks faster, lighter and more bouncy this year. Guy behind him ready to down it inside the 5. First goal of offense backed up. At least maintain the -5 so your punter has a normal drop.

Giants punted and covered very well. Field position attrition killed them because Dallas moved it and the Giants didn't .

Reminded me of the home game against the Saints when Bellevue Bob Whitfield kept getting personal fouls for head butting . Giants crossed the 50 on the last play of the game. Horrendous offense last night.
Even when we're not fair-catching on returns,

we never seem to have a good return game, on kicks or punts. Ever.
my problem was
giantfan2000 : 9/11/2017 5:11 pm : link
we kept on running it out of end zone during kickoffs and never got past the 15 yard line
It's hard to keep the gunners and others away from the returner

when the Cowboys are punting from midfield. We did the right thing.

Worse was last year when -- who was it? -- grabbed a kickoff at the 5 and let momentum carry him out of bounds. (I'm glad I've blocked out who it was.) That cost us 35 yards.
Thank you all and especially Great Dane, so our St's were poor letting

The boys gunners down the field in molested. Just a third failure of all aspects
And of course, don't forget the one good return

by Harris got called back for a penalty again! This is becoming an epidemic under our man Quinn.
I thought there were a couple of punts
Gman11 : 9/11/2017 6:10 pm : link
that Harris could have returned. Maybe he only gets 4 or 5 yards, but that's better than nothing. Where's Leon McQuay when you need him?

They weren't unmolested, but when punting from the 45/50 yard line and the punter launches a high one, it is hard to keep the gunners from getting down field.
Thought ST were decent last night.
Who here thinks 10 yards would have mattered last night?
EricJ : 9/11/2017 6:24 pm : link
In my opinion, I would rather we fair catch the ball on the 10 then risk having it downed near the goal line and have to punt from the back of the end zone.

I agree. And our field position was also due to our inept offense to be able to move the ball 20 yards.
Whats new here?
Chris L. : 9/11/2017 6:29 pm : link
Our special teams continue to be awful and we do nothing to fix it. Quinn is a disaster and has been for years. We get out returned in every game we play.
Field position
annexOPR : 9/11/2017 6:45 pm : link
was due to the offense's continued ineptitude resulting in 3 and outs that had the defense gassed by half time and unable to make a big play

Everything about last night comes down to the offensive line - and their inability to sustain drives. Fix the OL and all the sudden "the scheme" and special teams magically don't look so bad.

That was one of the worst displays of OL play I've ever seen. Made the Cowboys backups look like a bunch of Lawrence Taylor clones. Might as well bring back Ian Allen - I'm sure he'd be cheap.
Our depth sucks...

Do to poor drafts too many misses mixed in with some bad luck in the injury department .
Too many projects with TE;s O-linemen WR's . RB's especially LB we finally his a good one in Goodson .
Kennard looked great as a rookie . We have yet to hit a mid
to late round pick in many positions . Were constantly dumpster diving to fill the roster .
