Reliever Eric Hanhold, a former sixth-round draft pick, is the Mets' player to be named later from Milwaukee in the Neil Walker trade.

Yes... another reliever

He's pitching

OK in A-ball but not really excelling.

I wonder if the Mets would've gotten anything more for some of these guys if they had picked up the salaries.

DanMetroMan : 9/12/2017 12:49 pm : link
PG had Hanhold 92-94 with a slider back in 2015. He's nearly 24 in A+, guess take solace in the K rate improving with the move to the pen.

Dan what is your take on some of these pitchers? Who do you see making an impact next year? Our bullpen depth is pretty ridiculous right now, though most of it is unproven. Our rotation depth is strong too, which we need given how injury prone we are. We also drafted a ton of relievers.
I
DanMetroMan : 9/12/2017 1:20 pm : link
like Bashlor the most of the group. I'd be lying if I said I had heard of this guy before today (Hanhold). Corey Taylor conceivably could bounce back as well (similar profile to Hanhold). Nogosek is going to have to throw more strikes or he's not going to be a big leaguer. Ryan pitched well at the end but was in a-ball so it's hard to even judge him.

The beauty in the young arms in numbers strategy
Shecky : 9/12/2017 1:47 pm : link
Is that you won't see the overuse we have been accustomed to. Guy throws three of four days - they send him down for ten days and bring up a fresh arm. Mid season can throw an arm on the DL with "tired arm" and revive him as well.
Desperately will need someone to make the jump that Robles never has made thought to replace Ramos and Famia.

Don't mind the return we got for Walker/Granderson
Mike in NY : 9/12/2017 2:18 pm : link
Neither were going to be brought back next year. Still question the returns for Reed and Bruce as both were worth a Qualifying Offer so the return is light considering what Ramos cost us. Bautista looks intriguing, but I would rather have tried to get someone who at least has the potential to be a starter.
Nido
DanMetroMan : 9/12/2017 2:33 pm : link
promoted. Seems like a solid backup as his upside. Good defensive rep.
If you don't pick up the salary, you are not going to get much
Vanzetti : 9/12/2017 2:38 pm : link
so I think it was smart going after minor league relievers because these guys at least have a chance to contribute at the ML level, whereas the type of position player or starter you would receive for Neil Walker or Curtis Granderson would likely not even make the ML roster and would even more likely be a backup if they did.

To me, it looks like Mets got a bunch of Robles, Sewalds, Smokers and Goeddels in return. Guys who might have a good out pitch but lack command or vice versa. Quite possible none of them are ever any good, but maybe they also luck out and one or two of these guys develops.
It can't be

DanMetroMan : 9/12/2017 2:44 pm : link
looks like an offensive fluke for Nido but strong defensive rep gives him a chance to be a big leaguer. Funny thing, he was drafted with a poor defensive rep and ++ potential power. Defense developed, power did not.
I guess this is Sandy's new strategy
Modus Operandi : 9/12/2017 3:14 pm : link
Have each of these guys pitch one inning apiece instead of relying on the stable of China dolls cureently comprising the starting rotation.

I don't know what's worse - the Knicks who chase every splashy name irrespective of whether or not it makes the team better - or Alderson's Mets, whose blueprint can be summarized with, "How much?"

Can this organization possibly be any duller?

Remember. Oriole's are having trouble signing Machado
They may have to trade him for less value or risk losing him in FA

The Mets have one of the worst farm systems in baseball so how are they going to acquire Machado without giving up Rosario, Thor, Degrom, or Conforto. Smith's value took a hit after his poor showing in the majors so Baltimore would probably ask for something else. They would likely demand at package starting with Degrom, Rosario, +

Lol, come on. If you start with DeGrom then you ain't getting much else, if at all.

DeGrom is one of the better pitchers in the league, in the prime of his career, consistent, grossly cheap, and not even a FA until 2021.

I didn't say that's what they would give up I am saying that's the asking price.
Machado is only 24 and one of the best young players in baseball. Degrom is 29 and how many years do you think that he has left with his frame. Degrom pitched well this season but not up to the level that we are accustomed to. If you think that Degrom alone is enough to lure away Machado from the Orioles who are also trying to compete then I don't know what to tell you.

They will be asking for (and receiving) top tier prospects. Many believe the White Sox are "wild cards" for him thanks to their farm system.

The Yankees make alot of sense. The Braves have the prospects to spare but I don't think that they would be seriously interested because of the cost of extending Machado.

Since the White Sox are punting 2018, why give up anything for him? They should try to sign him as an FA. I doubt Machado gives a substantial discount to any team that trades for his walk year.

I'm not the one personally touting the White Sox but they may feel they can retain him if they trade for him. Regardless of the team the target is going to be prospects and pre-arb players for the Orioles. A "franchise rebuilder". They should be able to score at least 2 top tier young talents.

that's hoping to contend in 2017 with space at 3B or SS makes the most sense. The Yankees seem like a really nice fit to me. The Mets make sense in theory but (like other mentioned) can't afford to pay the price that Baltimore will ask for.

A lot of the teams that I'd think are darkhorses to sign him (e.g., White Sox, Philly) aren't really darkhorses to trade for him since they will likely be punting 2018 and won't want to give up bigtime prospects to pay for his 2018 season.
Phillies

I agree that Philly is going to add bigtime payroll at some point in the next few years which is why I listed them as a Machado darkhorse (same thing with Harper too IMO)

But, Philly is 8 games worse than the Mets this year. They are nowhere close to being a contender in 2018. Why would they pay a huge price to add a rental (Machado)?

Both Yelich and Stanton would be long-term keepers so adding them isn't "going for it" in 2017. It was a plan to add bigtime talent without gutting their system by eating a ton of salary.

If Philly wants Machado, why not sign him after 2018 and keep the prospects? It's not like he's going to put them over the top.

Because if they want him "that badly" then they likely see value in trading for him and giving him a huge extension vs. letting a team like Boston or NYY do the same.

Oh, I understood what you said. An asking price of DeGrom, Rosario (#1 prospect in baseball this year) plus more is laughable. Hey, Machado also played well this season but not up the level that we are accustomed to. DeGrom also started off as a short stop so there likely aren't as many miles on the arm. And when did 29 become old?

I can understand the other side of it. Of course, Baltimore will However, you also can't discount the cost. Machado already costs more than double what DeGrom. Then you have to hope to sign him to a disgusting contract after one year. DeGrom isn't even a FA until 2021. It's a big deal.

Anyway, its a deal that would never happen. But DeGrom has been one of the better pitchers in baseball over the last four years. I'm sure it doesn't help that he's had to play on a cursed, shitty team during that tenure, lol. All things considered.

Yeah, I expected this response after I wrote it. You aren't wrong. Maybe shitty was too strong a word to use. I'll give you 2015, even though they were shitty for half the season (my issue, not yours lol). But 2016 sucked. I get they got the 2nd wild card but don't base much on that. Again, just my opinion on the wild card game...right or wrong.

But the team has mostly sucked during his time in the majors, despite him leading this pitching staff.

I know, Jay. I didn't say that's what you were saying. My point is, if you think he's been one of the best pitchers over the last four years on arguable the best possible contract...then you don't even entertain also giving up baseball's best SS prospect plus more. Not for a one year rental and the possibility of shelling out a $200 mil contract.

I might be in the minority with that thinking, but it's how I feel. DeGrom is what teams drool over...a TOR pitcher making peanuts.
