Question, what are the trends in previous years for NFL teams to reshuffle the OLine with a positive result?
Thanks Sy

Always a pleasure to read your write-ups.

Great write up Sy

Sean Lee gave Eli fits he was all over the place .
Eli just looks gun shy right now we know he can bounce back I just wonder would you make a change right now with Jerry or perhaps Hart ?
We better hope OBJ is good to go Monday Night I don't want to start out 0-3 or we might be out of the picture early .
Thanks, Sy, great stuff as usual.

When McAdoo said he made some changes on O in the 2nd half, can you identify from your film study where that was specifically?
Thanks SY

I enjoyed the read and agree with most everything. The one thing I am less agreeable about at the moment is the Eli statement. He has not looked good in quite some time. We can blame the Oline but when he has time he still looks like he is missing something. These check down throws mean nothing to me. When we need the passes made he has been making them and some of these short passes that look like they are just frantically thrown are going to end up costing us either in a turnover alone or a pick six. He looked as rattled as I have seen him, including his rookie season.

I am glad you pointed out Flowers. Too many keep saying he looks better, he played better...Yes, if you compare it to his play last year but not to what we would call good to very good play for an NFL LT. Flowers is never going to be the guy at LT. It was a swing and a miss by the Front Office. He needs to be moved ala William Roberts years ago to see if he can salvage a solid career at Guard or maybe RT.

Hart is plain bad. Jerry is not much better but he did play better late in the game.

Great

Not enough for sure. How about running it 2 times in a row for a change?
10 runs all day

Power never went out during Irma so we watched the entire game. The first half did more damage to us than Irma. Hideous performance.

Good write up. About the TEs being a nemesis, I think you answered your own question in your remarks. You said Collins should have remained on Witten, and in fact that would have been a better solution. I think Collins or Casillas need to get that assignment more frequently and I think we'll be ok. I'd go with KRob, if he ever gets healthy, as well.
Not sure I can bring myself to ...

read it. Need a drink first.
The offense was offensive....
Doomster : 9/12/2017 10:07 pm : link
Orleans Darkwa: 3 att – 14 yds – 4.7 avg. Had the nicest run of the night, 12 yards on his first attempt which didn’t happen until the second half of the second quarter. Pass blocked well, showed more life with the ball in his hands than Perkins.

Sy, you base this on one run? What did he get on his other two runs?

Vereen may very well be the best RB on this team by a wide margin; he needs more meaningful touches.

To me he looked slow(especially on the first down screen.....should have had more yards on that play).....like Sy said, most of his production was in garbage time....I especially liked the two completions in a row he had, that didn't result in a first down....

Ends: As we saw last year, both Jason Pierre Paul and Olivier Vernon played the majority of the defensive snaps (89% and 97%, respectively). Pierre Paul had the highest grade of the group, showing his usual excellent range in pursuit and sturdiness at the point of attack.

He went up against Collins, a second year player, playing RT for the first time.....Collins won that contest....

I agree....Snacks played a heck of a game......as did Goodson......

Apple slow to react to the 3rd and 12 WR screen......how do you cover Whitten from the end zone? on the Beasley catch he had a chance to knock it down and didn't..... Remember last season, D. Thompson was going to be great before he got hurt? He was invisible out there....

How does Elliot not have anyone cover him on that catch for 30 yards?

This offense must have had a contingency plan if OBj couldn't play.....it certainly didn't show.....

This game came down to a couple of 3rd down plays, that Dallas made, and the Giants didn't....It came down to Eli missing on some big throws.....even Dak did not have a good game, thank god....

As far as the offense goes, we run too many short patterns, which does not spread the defense.....we throw too many passes where receivers stop and turn around, and are immediately tackled.....Eli has to stop staring down receivers.....Eli has to throw a better short ball....

How in the world, down 2 scores, and little time left, do you continue to throw short passes? That eliminates any chance of winning......Eli should have taken a knee every time in that last series.....all he did was pad his stats....

Mac has to light a fire under this offense....did it look like there was any sense of urgency by the offense?

It really looked bad out there for the offense......was it lack of playing time in preseason? Next week will answer that question....this offense is too good to be putting up that kind of effort....it's up to the coaches to kick some asses this week....
Great analysis
Marty866b : 9/12/2017 10:21 pm : link
I was blacked out down here due to the hurricane but listened to the game on my phone. When I got back home I was pleasantly surprised that my home maintained power and I got to watch the game. I'll tell you that I was kind of surprised that the o-line,which was bad, didn't look as bad as it sounded with Papa and Banks. Sy, as you pointed out correctly,Eli,at times, had time to stand in the pocket and deliver good throws. I thought he looked awful. He looked like he was just happy to get rid of the ball even if he didn't appear to have a good grip on it. I am really doubting Eli's ability to raise the play of the offense. When can anyone say was the last time that after the game you could say,Eli was great today? I'd say two years ago in New Orleans. I am not convinced that McAdoo is calling all these check downs.
Sy,do you think that Wheeler would actually be worse then Flowers or Hart? I don't. It's time to shake up the offensive line. This is more or less their third year together and it's getting worse instead of better. It's time to admit that Flowers is a bust and move on. Also, how in this world can the team go into the season believing that Bobby Hart is going to be a good football player and have little to no competition at his position? The Giants knew that Fluker is a guard. We have two offensive tackles, one offensive guard, and our running backs all who are not NFL caliber starting players. All this to go along with an old skittish quarterback is a recipe for disaster.
Sy on Vereen
lugnut : 9/12/2017 10:50 pm : link
"Not one carry for the back that seems to find the hidden yards every time he touches the ball is inexcusable. Vereen may very well be the best RB on this team by a wide margin; he needs more meaningful touches."

EXACTLY. I said close to that 2 years ago and was shouted down here.
If there is a serious personnel move to make on the OL
Sy'56 : 9/12/2017 10:53 pm : link
Pugh to LT. Either bench Flowers or move him to RT or either OG spot if he can handle it mentally.
Sy'56
Marty866b : 9/12/2017 10:58 pm : link
"Handle it mentally"? His techniques are awful and he doesn't get down low enough to be a good guard. Time to stop forcing him into the lineup because Jerry Reese picked in 9th in the entire draft. Has Flowers ever played a "clean" game?
When is the last "clean" game
brunswick : 9/12/2017 11:50 pm : link
From our QB?
Thanks Sy ...
short lease : 9/12/2017 11:58 pm : link
Does any player on OL really have anybody competing for their job? I would draft 5 OL in next years draft with our first 5 picks.

Forget about Flowers. I am not saying he can't develop into a good player somewhere on that line but, left tackle is to valuable a position to show this little improvement going into his 3rd season?

I am interested what his agent(s) are going to be looking for when it comes time to re-up. They have to know just because he is playing LT .... (will he be playing LT in 2 years - next year? Who knows?).

Anyway - sorry about the "Millering" .... thanks again for the write-up.
SY, thanks for the write-up. Always appreciate your expertise

Why nothing on the Coaching?
IMO I felt both Spags and McAdoo got outcoached in that game. We looked ill-prepared, hesitant, and once again predictable. While I realize one game does not make a team, you have to look over the course of last year and this one and the similarities of the problems on O are obvious. The playcalling in spots is so awkward and out of sync for the situation.

Here we had OBJ out and yet not once did we send Engram on a seam to attack the middle. That was the reason we picked him, he's a matchup nightmare for that play. It just feels like the whole gist of our strategy is to hope the D stops them and we get lucky on O and score just barely enough.

How does an NFL head Coach not understand that with OBJ out the same gameplan of underneath stuff (Hoping someone takes it to the house) is going to work? It appeared like we had nothing planned for OBJ being out and that is inexcusable

Teams that are forced to shuffle their line in-season based on performance don't have high success rates...however I think that has more to do with the fact they guys simps aren't that good.

I watched a few times...and I didn't notice anything schematically. I think they simply executed at a higher level across the board. The OL on the first drive of the 2nd half played very well.

Engram was sent up the middle seam a few times...they had him covered well.

The rhythm wasn't there, absolutely. Can we blame that on coaching or Eli? I tend t think the latter...and if Eli completed some of those passes that were on the easy side, we may be talking about a different result.
Thank you for a great summary and analysis.

They were doing it last year up until game #3, and then he got hurt.

He was running the ball a lot versus the Skins.

Perhaps durability is the reason.

Detroit, and I thought he was pretty clean in GB up until a last minute INT that was basically just Eli heaving it up there.

Perkins would have been more effective if he had more touches? Were their running lanes?
Sy, quick question
Fish : 9/13/2017 1:15 pm : link
You Pugh graded well and richburg average. In comparison to the cowboys oline, did you happen to grade them as well. Curious because a passing grade for Pugh might be a failing one on the cowboys.

Hard to say for sure, but I think every back benefits from more touches. Very much of their game is about rhythm

I did not grade the Cowboys OL, no. It is pretty time consuming and the meat of my time is still towards the Draft.

don't think anyone is gonna feel comfortable until they play Monday night . This is a Superbowl type season the Defense is dominate we just needed to fix the O-line .
Replaced Cruz check !
Upgraded the TE position Check !
So basically we waited through the draft through free agency added One piece DJ Fluker we used a late round pick on another player but he got beat out by a free agent .
Well game one was a huge disappointment not the fact that we lost the fact that we looked worse so until Monday Night end of the game will we have a better sample as of right now I have not much confidence in what is in front of Eli and I doubt he does either.
Nice write-up

Anyone else surprised Jerrah didn't make a bigger deal of Witten's record. Maybe it's Witten himself being humble, but I was shocked how low key it was.

Low key and Jerrah usually don't mix.

and thanks for taking the time to do it.

How long does the staff wait until they try moving Ereck Flowers inside? The speedy, athletic pass rushers give him fits, and I just don't think he's ever going to click. He's strong and can be a mauling guard IMO. Dallas' defensive front looked better than it is only because of our line. They are not very good, and against teams that have a real front 4, it could get ugly.

Also, it won't happen this year, but barring some miraculous turnaround at the QB position this season, this could be the final year for Eli...

I thought the defense played very well considering they were on the field for most of the game. BJ Goodson was outstanding. He looked fast and was flying to the ball.

Yup!

the offensive scheme - just feels like they are set up to fail. it seems like they are overcomplicating simple designs - they give a different look or wrinkle which adds to breakdowns, but its the same philosophy. i don't think you can just overhaul the credo that has been instilled - i don't think they design to players strengths. ugh. gunna be a long season.
