LT and OBJ, today's market

bigblue5611_2 : 9/16/2017 12:18 am
At first I got to thinking about how much a player like LT would command in the open market. Then I got to thinking on how that would compare to what OBJ is going to command. With that said, I guess this is a two part question.

1. How much do you think LT would command in today's FA open market if he were to produce the same numbers/results as well is instilling that same fear in the opposing team.
-Side note to the fear aspect; I remember reading that a QB (I want to say it was Jaws) called a TO because he couldn't find LT on the field in order to call blocking scheme...LT was on the sideline at the time...

2. Who would get paid more?

I'm going to put parameters in place that the Giants would be able to afford both players as well as they would be signed in different offseasons. Also, this is not factoring in the current roster.
Simple to me

Only one changes the game without anyone else. LT in current game would make close to QB money. OBJ is today and hopefully will retire an all time great but LT caused every team to adjust their game plan. Few player can ever make that claim. If von miller makes 19 I would say 20 plus for LT
I don't think LT would be breaking the bank

simply because LT truly WANTED to play football. He lived it every day. He broke ranks with the NFLPA and played with a bunch of nobodies just to play the game. I don't think LT cared a lot about how he was viewed or if he was respected by the press or if he was the highest paid etc. He wanted to play football and getting paid huge sums of money was secondary.

OBJ isn't like that. Getting paid is very important to him. How he is viewed by the press and public is important to him. And there is NOTHING wrong with that! Almost every player wants that too. It's just LT was completely different from anyone else, he was a breed apart from anyone else that had played the game or will ever play the game. I think he would have played for food money, if that's what they were paying. He loved the game too much to pay hardball for large sums of money.

That being said, I'd pay LT a lot more that I'd ever pay OBJ. Both are great and I'm glad that both were/are Giants but LT was a force unlike anything that ever hit the NFL.
The three players with the highest cap numbers in 2017...
Big Blue Blogger : 9/16/2017 2:42 am : link
...are Joe Flacco, Carson Palmer and Kirk Cousins. The seven players with the highest average annual compensation on their current contracts are Matthew Stafford, Derek Carr, Andrew Luck, Palmer, Drew Brees, Cousins and Flacco. The most money guaranteed at signing on current contracts? Stafford, Ndamukong Suh, Eli Manning, Flacco, Luck and Marcell Dareus.

The point is, the best player (say, Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady) doesn't get way more money than everyone else and stay on top for years. He gets incrementally more than the previous highest-paid player, then gets passed the next year by some guy whose deal makes you say, "Wait, he got how much???" The cycle continues each year until the salary cap starts to fall, which hasn't happened yet.

Suppose LT were playing under the current CBA. His rookie deal would cover his 1981-1984 seasons, and and the Giants would obviously exercise their option for his fifth year. Assuming the team didn't franchise him, he would be in line for a new deal in time for the glorious 1986 season. That deal would raise the bar above Suh, Von Miller, Fletcher Cox, Justin Houston and J.J.Watt - the five defensive players with $100MM-plus contracts. But I doubt he would raise the bar exponentially. The threat of the franchise tag would reduce his leverage and prevent a quantum leap above the biggest existing contracts. (He might get less guaranteed money than others because of his off-field issues - especially since he would probably get caught a lot sooner under the current CBA; LT got away with God-knows-what until after his seventh season.) The best case for Taylor - in terms of contract numbers - would be if the Giants tagged him for year six (1986), when he put together possibly the greatest single season by a player on either side of the ball. Unfortunately, the strike in 1987 and his suspension in 1988 would have cost him a lot of that money.

The same constraints apply to Beckham, aside from the drug thing. Assuming good health, he will be the highest-paid receiver... until he isn't.
LT and Money

...wasn't LT going to leave the NFL and his team to be the first to make 1 million dollars with the generals?
LT would

want today's money. Can't apply 1980's to now unless you factor in the business differences as well. And he'd get incrementally more than Watt/Suh/etc. it's just how it works.
You live in a dream world,

if you think LT would not be about the money, if playing today.....
LT would demand at least One Billion Dollars....

The Giants are going to have to make tough decisions this offseason

We might lose both Pugh and Richburg because OBJ needs a deal that will likely make him the highest paid non QB in football. Also Landon Collins will also be eligible for a new deal and will be going into the final year of his rookie contract. There is a good chance that he will be among the highest if not the highest paid defensive players in football.
If we lose Pugh and Richburg
UConn4523 : 9/16/2017 9:45 am : link
it will be because we don't want to overpay not because of Odell. And who cares anyway, everyone wants 5 new players since that Vikings are going to go 19-0.

Don't kid yourself. LT would want (and get) a contract that exceeds even JJ Watt's. I would think an AAV of $25MM would be about right for him.

And you have to contextualize - it may have seemed like LT didn't care about the press or how he was perceived, but that was before the days of paparazzi, TMZ and social media. There's really no way to say for certain that LT wouldn't be thirsty for the spotlight. The only thing you can maybe posit is that he participated in so much illicit activity off the field that maybe he would have tried to stay out of the media.

a hypothetical: Trade OBJ, would we recieve a Kings Ransom like Herschel Walker trade? Considered to be the most lopsided trade in NFL history. It propelled Cowgirls to 90s dynasty with 2 first and a second round pick. Through a couple good moves, acquired players like Russel Maryland and others. It was because of the threat that Walker was to score everytime he touched the ball. Vikings at the time felt they got better of deal. Could we get at least 2 first and a second? If you were GM would you do it?
His cap hit is gonna be huge.

LT didn't cross the line because he would've played for free, that is some good old days nonsense. He played because he wanted to keep getting paid, just like the rest of the stars of that era.
This I know -

LT would be the highest paid defensive player in the league. And, I wouldn't be surprised if his agent would be able to make that guaranteed every year. Meaning if another defensive player signed a bigger contract - LT gets a raise automatically.
LT drafted by the Giants in 1981.

As a rookie LT is defensive player of the year.

Giant make the playoffs for the first time in 17 years and even win a game.
