Landon Collins: Defensive Shutouts Should be Our Goal

How about we focus on getting a 3 and Out first? Didn't see any last week versus Dallas...

They were on the field a majority of the game and gave up 19 points and a TD off a BS PI call. Do you people even watch the games?
You people??

Defense had no 3-outs.
No turnovers.
1 Sack.
Continually gave up yardage on drives that ended in FGs or with Offense being pinned inside the 20 all night.

Yes, our Offense sucked but how many games do you predict we can win by giving up 19 points this season...maybe 4?

Unfortunately, the way this team is built, good is not good enough for the defense. They have to be better.
The defense
SoZKillA : 9/16/2017 2:12 pm : link
Was the only reason we were in the game, and it was a huge reason we won 11 games last season. The defense is the last thing we should be worried about. You expect pick 6's and fumbles returned for TDs every half? Be realistic. This OL is holding this team back, Bad OL Play = Bad QB play. It trickles down.

And 19 points against the best OL we will play all year? I'd take that every single time we played Dallas.

We invested a ton of money in the defense. Of course we should expect more out of it than an offensive line made up of stop gaps and young draft picks.

Eli is our highest paid player, then the next four highest paid players are on the defense.

The defense couldn't get off the field in some important spots. Allowed too many scoring drives - even if most were FG's. Couldn't flip field position for the offense, either.

It sounds crazy to blame the defense for anything when the offense was as pathetic as it was - but if the Giants want to win 10-11 games this year, the defensive performance on Sunday night wasn't good enough.

Sucks to say, but it's the reality of this football team. They were better the 2nd time we played Dallas last year.

You couldn't be more right. As soon as you bring this up, people think you're blaming the defense. We're not. But your points are well taken. Why does everyone have to be so sensitive. The offense played a miserable game, but the defense better play better if we're looking to go to the post-season.
The offense made it impossible on the defense in the first half

The D was always on the field. Our O ran a total of 18 plays in the whole first half (on 5 drives)! For reference on the first drive of the 2nd half, where we scored our FG, we ran 15 alone, and ran 37 total in the 2nd half.

The D was also put in the position of defending a short field many times. Half of times Dallas got the ball in the first half, they started in between their own 30-50. Basically one or two first downs and they would get a FG at minimum. Of the 5 Giants chances, where they ran the amazing 18 plays mentioned above, they started all 5 at their own 25 or worse. I believe 3 of the 5 were inside their own 10. They O was never able to move the ball even a little in the first half. It was their job to change the field position at a minimum, which is what Mac means by complementary football.

Through it all the D only gave up 19 points, which in today's NFL is a very good number. In fact in the 2nd half they held Dallas to only 3 pts in Dallas, this is great. I don't think its a coincidence that when the offense started to move the ball even a little, the D clamped Dallas down completely. Given an occasional breather, and better field position, is all they needed.

This game lays at the feet of the offense 100%.

We were never really in the game.

And I don't expect pick 6s and td returns every half, but if you don't expect more impact plays out of this particular defense versus what they gave last Sunday night you're nuts.

I absolutely agree the OL and the impact it is having on Eli is holding the team back. But have t be able to give them a fighting chance with a few short fields during the game.

If not, we haven't a chance...
Even all time great defenses give up drives...to expect the

defense to pitch a shutout is asking a lot when your offense go 3 and out most of first half. The 86 defense gave up 31 points to the cowboys and most Giant fans consider it the best ever.

No one is asking for a shutout, though.

This defense had games last season where it was better than it was Sunday night. One of those games was against the Cowboys.

People aren't saying the defense was sucked or has to be perfect - but they've been better and need to be better for this team to win consistently. That's just how we're built right now. We invested a TON of money in the defense. They need to be a top 5 unit.

They never really broke in game 1 - but they did a lot of bending and Dallas was able to at minimum, keep pushing the ball into our end of the field.

We didn't get a whole lot of pressure on Prescott. Elliott ran for over 100 yards. We didn't force any turnovers.

If I'm not mistaken, this defense didn't hold Dallas to a single 3 and out. They got at least one first down on every single one of their drives.

That's not good enough. We can and need to be better. It's the reality of this football team.

we are on the same page...
They might have had a 3 and out if the defense was allowed to
fredgbrown : 9/16/2017 6:37 pm : link
rest. The Giants punted 5 times in the first half with the longest drive being 5 plays. You put that much pressure on the defense with the OL they have, it will be hard to get pressure and make stops.
I don't see how you can put this on the defense
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/16/2017 7:09 pm : link
You hold a team under 20 points in the current NFL, you are expected to win.

It's a bad standard to put on a defense when they have to be out there for 50 plays before halftime. They were the #2 scoring defense in the league last year by allowing 17.8ppg. They allowed 19 points against a QB who threw 4 turnovers all of last season.
Yea
WillVAB : 9/16/2017 8:13 pm : link
Not buying the bullshit everyone is to blame argument. The defense played well enough to win. Best OL in the league vs a game manager QB in a run heavy offense. You're not going to get a lot of opportunities for flashy game changing plays. The defense did their job, especially playing on a short field all night long.

Reminds me of the nonsense some people would say following the 08 eagles playoff loss. The offense and specifically no Plax lost that game. Similar to the Dallas loss.
Nobody put the loss on the defense

But don't think they were some type of shining stars last Sunday b/c they weren't...
