How impressive is high school football in your area?

Eric from BBI : Admin : 9/16/2017 3:13 pm
I went to a dinky little high school. Our football team wasn't good offensively at all. Couldn't pass at all. We used to win or lose low-scoring games. The teams in the division were almost all run first offenses.

So my eldest is now in high school and playing in the marching band so I go every Friday night to watch. Man, I am impressed. The school operates out of the pistol offense and the team can throw out of a variety of spread-offense packages. They even audible and run a lot of nifty misdirection running plays - many which break big runs. The biggest problem they have is penalties (I swear they must have 20 holding and false start penalties in the last two games).

I wonder if the HS game has evolved like this around the country?

...is very impressive and has been for nearly 20 years ever since Coach Lou DiRienzo took over the program. He runs several offenses including a single- and double-wing. They're ranked in the Top 10 in New York State and was at their game last night in White Plains (48-0). What I especially enjoy about their game is that it's public high school so all the players are from the neighborhood.

I work as mental health professional with kids and their families. I see kids and their families that are in middle school approached by folks from other schools try to get those in government housing to move. They will help relocate.

Welcome to football in the South.
how many 4 or 5 star players on Rutgers

IMG and St Thomas Aquinas have at least a dozen on each team. These guys will be playing and starting on Alabama, Clemson, LSU, and other top 10 college teams. Take off your red colored glasses. Rutgers wouldn't be competitive in the MAC and these HS teams have better athletes. Rutgers players are a little older IMG and Aquinas are a little better.

Look Rutgers is an excellent school educationally. It's football team is not. While they play in Div 1 the quality of play is not of that caliber. They should not be in the Big ten and as I stated previously would not be competitive in the MAC.

As for those of you who are so brave using profanity behind the safety of a keyboard I hope that you don't have a Rutgers education or I would have to reevaluate my opinion of the schools educational quality.

By the way congrats on beating a historically black school today. I look forward to when you play OSU, Mich, Wisc or PSU.

some good linemen who could block it and for the first 3 weeks of the season his team was putting up 50+ points a game and he was the leading rusher in the county! His high school is a small school and they played a lot of good teams from bigger schools and held their on, they won 8 games! He was also the middle linebacker on a small but fast defense and they did well. It seems that every so often a school will get a group of very good athletes, if you 8 or 9 outstanding players a team can do well.

LarmerTJR : 9/16/2017 7:37 pm : link
I am sorry buddy, but IMG is not beating a D-1 school. And , if we want to go there, a school created solely to train and school atheletes and pretty atheletes only, from around the country, not a county, not a state, and not even a region, a country, and yet they still won't beat Rutgers. Shit, they don't go undeafeated in the HS ranks and they have a huge competitive advantage. An "institution" created by a sport agency. And they still couldn't win. It's not just Rutgers they couldn't beat, but I find the Rutgers hate odd, as they are far from the worst D-1 program in the country. The skill and completion level difference must be beyond your comprehension.

Listen friend, I played high level HS ball and D1 football for a big program. There is no way in hell IMG, StA or MD or a Fucking all star team is beating a big D1 program from a Power 5 conference.

They could play 10 vs 11 and it wouldn't be close.

I live in Michigan and work at Detroit Catholic Central High School. We're kind of a football dynasty, having won 10 state championships since the 70s, but haven't won states since 2010 despite being in the finals 5 of the last 6 years. Schools from this area regularly send kids to bigtime D1 programs. Midwest high school football may not be considered in the same tier as Florida, California, or Texas, but it's not that far behind either. Great games and definitely a lot of talent up here.

It was more rural when I first moved here 20+ yrs ago, but has transitioned into urban sprawl/suburb- or at least mostly on the way to that (chamber of commerce has done a bang up job of keeping everything local and keeping big box places out.)

HS football is king here. Our stadium has actual seats (bought from the Royals when Kaufman was renovated) and is a "real" stadium.

From '99-2002 we were undefeated and state champs 3yrs running and ran a very balanced, pro-style offense. The oldest son was a freshman on the JV team in 2003- the year after the QB/RB/WR that had that run graduated and the Varsity team had their first loss against Chillicothe after 87 or so straight wins. The team they lost to ran a spread to perfection. In the years following (that I've watched- only go to one or two games a year now) it seems that the spread has become the norm rather than the exception.

In North Jersey. For a public high school with 500 kids, football is a huge deal and the program has had tremendous success with the current coach who took over in 1999.

They've won 4 state championships and played in 7 or 8 overall. They had the longest winning streak in NJ a year ago, going undefeated 2 straight seasons.

These most impressive part might be the amount of big time players from such a small town/program. The best would be NFL vet (and great dude for what it's worth) Anthony Fasano. Carlo Calabrese was a starter on a Norte Dame team that played in the National Championship. Dan DePalma won a ring with the Giants as a member of the practice squad. They had other kids Lonney, Kaslander, Canfora, Ferrari go on and have productive college careers at schools like Colgate and Bucknell. Most of these kids were within 6 years of each other.

The youth program is run very well and gets the kids ready. And once they get to high school it's not like they run through an all cupcake schedule either. Mountain Lakes, Hoboken, Cedar Grove and Caldwell all have great programs as well.

I watched a couple teams regularly that were state champ caliber in NJ and then PA. Those teams passed 7 or 8 times per game whether they needed to or not :) Strictly option football back then from the T or the wishbone. Sometimes 2 wideouts but sometimes only 1 and a tight end. If they wanted to get tricky they'd go with a flanker wide but not often and only if the opposing D moved all 11 into the box.

My boys played lax so I haven't seen HS football since '74.

we had a really good team. We played Dewitt Clinton in the Public School Athletic League City championships out at Randalls Island. The teams were evenly matched--I think we won. Of course, the rest of the students were nerds vs. high-testosterone types. Chanting "De Witt eats shit" was a really lousy idea. After the game, they waited for us on the Triboro Bridge, and took all of the blue and white Brooklyn Tech jackets from those who were wearing them--in 15 degree weather--and threw them in the river.

That was the last citywide football championship for 20 or 30 years, at least. Of course, that was 1961. Had that happened 20 years later, we would have lost a lot more than our jackets.
How impressive...

In my area, the high school I went to and the town nearby
have the second oldest high school football rivalry in the country...I believe they have played each other approx.
135 times! Many many years ago, they would play 2X a season.
They annually draw about 10,000 fans for their
Turkey Day classic. I played some QB, until junior year,

There are currently 22 players on rosters from the Charlotte area - that includes Rock Hill, SC - a fairly small town that has produced guys like JaDaveon Clowney, Stephon Gilmore, Corderelle Patterson, Chris Pope, Ko Simpson, Jonathon Joseph, Jeff Burris, Ben Watson, Gerald Dixon.

That's just one city, not to mention some of the talent that has come from Charlotte.

the winningest program in the State of New Jersey, really! When I played, we split Jersey and PA and were not eligible for NJSIAA because of the intense rivalries between us and PA schools. Wm. Allen, Dieruff, Liberty, Freedom, and our arch rival Easton! We played New Brunswick, Bridgewater, Brick Twsp and East Orange or Union! Trust me, these were all tough games. Ed McCaffery, Andre Reed, Ned Bolcar, Jim Ringo, Bob Parsons, Matt Millen, Bob Stem, were just some of the names coming out of the area over the last 50 years! I played for three head coaches that were assistants during my time. Mickey Frinzi, Bob Stem and Phil Rohm who went on to win multiple NJSIAA championships after we got reinstated in '77! The thing about Stem, he won four titles in NJ and three in PA with Bethlehem Catholic, PA. I can't think of another coach that won multiple titles in two states! I could go on and on but you all get the picture. Oh, and we can wrestle too! ;)

in rural Idaho. It's not like they're producing NFL players or anything, in fact, few go on to play in college.

But the resources spent are jaw-dropping. Tons of support from boosters - the whole town comes out to every game. Seriously - 90% of the population is there. They buy new uniforms every year for the football team and cheer squad.

And to Eric's point, the approach to the game is over the top, imo. They fly the coaches to conferences a few times a year where they learn about the latest trends in football. The kids are running much more sophisticated plays than ever before.

My problem with it is that this is happening while the schools are failing and kids are not learning basic algebra, or are able to write at even close to a college level by the time they graduate. Many seniors have never read all the way through a 200 page book by themselves.

But that football team - ours is perennially in contention for a state title (not the highest division).

Yeah, it's really insane how much the budget is for some high school football teams. I know in my situation at a private school, we are being told that enrollment is down and all of the departments and activities should watch their budgets and "just because you have this much in your budget doesn't mean you have to spend it all!"

This past weekend, the entire football team (60-70 kids plus about a dozen or so coaches) left on Thursday after school to drive charter buses from Detroit to Cleveland and stayed overnight in a hotel to play a Friday night football game before taking the charter buses back to Detroit afterwards. I know the team has boosters and the trip was most likely paid for by boosters that earmarked the funds specifically for that trip, but the optics are pretty bad given the way the administration is always talking about budget concerns and penny pinching on actual classroom necessities.

It says a lot about the community when they put their dollars behind athletics while academics languish, imo. We had three bonds shot down in a row to repair infrastructure. In one school, they had to use bottled water all year because the water lines were so bad, and the voters shot down a bond to fix the lines. Worst part? The biggest complaint was that those who wrote the bond included $ to build a second (practice) gym for the school.

Meanwhile, the local Jr. High decided not to have a 7th grade team because they had no money for uniforms. A local booster stepped up and paid for all the uniforms on the spot for the entire team. It was that important to them.

A couple guys had size, and a couple guys were good athletes, but anyone with size and athletic ability is probably playing elsewhere, private school.
