I went to a dinky little high school. Our football team wasn't good offensively at all. Couldn't pass at all. We used to win or lose low-scoring games. The teams in the division were almost all run first offenses.
So my eldest is now in high school and playing in the marching band so I go every Friday night to watch. Man, I am impressed. The school operates out of the pistol offense and the team can throw out of a variety of spread-offense packages. They even audible and run a lot of nifty misdirection running plays - many which break big runs. The biggest problem they have is penalties (I swear they must have 20 holding and false start penalties in the last two games).
I wonder if the HS game has evolved like this around the country?
Not much down field passing that I can remember. Even from opponents.
Went to school in upstate NY in the late 90s.
The team in my area now throws deep more often than the Giants do. In two games, there have been NFL-worthy type catches in the end zone.
And no, Texas high school football is not better than Rutgers. Not even close.

Yes it is
We live breath sleep and do football. Such a shame since I moved to NJ.
I said that tongue in cheek obviously. I think RU would win by 3. Although the more I see of this RU- Morgan St game I may change my opinion.
And these days I live walking distance from Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, which is a baseball and football dynasty. A bunch of guys in the NFL graduated from there, but I haven't attended a single game.
Then when I got into high school, we had Scott Burrell, who was same grade as me (1st round pick in MLB and NBA - first player to do that I believe) and he was a QB, and it changed everything. He was 6' 5" - 6' 6" as a freshman, a cannon arm and could run. We deviated from the bone and ran some spread, and lost in the state finals, but those were the best teams my high school had and they were fun to watch
Howie Long is an alumni.
Which catholic school?
BC grad here.

That's just a ridiculous statement. One of the most absurd I've ever heard on BBI. Well done.
LT, Plax, Vick, Jerod Mayo, Kenny Easley, Dre Bly, Tyrod Taylor, DeAngelo Hall, etc...That is a ridiculous football hotbed
Welcome to football in the South.

Hur dur let's take an empty headed jab at Rutgers!
Fuck you
As for those of you who are so brave using profanity behind the safety of a keyboard I hope that you don't have a Rutgers education or I would have to reevaluate my opinion of the schools educational quality.
By the way congrats on beating a historically black school today. I look forward to when you play OSU, Mich, Wisc or PSU.

Certainly adds a funny twist to the little spate we had on a Yankees thread a few weeks back. Haha. Cheers.
Listen friend, I played high level HS ball and D1 football for a big program. There is no way in hell IMG, StA or MD or a Fucking all star team is beating a big D1 program from a Power 5 conference.
They could play 10 vs 11 and it wouldn't be close.
I'd explain it to you with detail, but the claim you're making is so beyond absurd that it's not even worth another 30 seconds.
Holy shit, the stupid is strong on BBI these days.

HS football is king here. Our stadium has actual seats (bought from the Royals when Kaufman was renovated) and is a "real" stadium.
From '99-2002 we were undefeated and state champs 3yrs running and ran a very balanced, pro-style offense. The oldest son was a freshman on the JV team in 2003- the year after the QB/RB/WR that had that run graduated and the Varsity team had their first loss against Chillicothe after 87 or so straight wins. The team they lost to ran a spread to perfection. In the years following (that I've watched- only go to one or two games a year now) it seems that the spread has become the norm rather than the exception.

Get the fuck out of here with that shit. They are in a rebuilding process with a new coach and new offense and are terrible the last couple years, but you have no fucking credibility when you trot out stupid shit like saying they aren't a d1 program or that any HS team wouldn't be blown the fuck off hte field by them.
So once again, fuck yourself, and don't shit on my school with your asinine ramblings.

There are several teams here in Florida that would be favored against Rutgers on a neutral field. IMG, St Thomas Aquinas come to mind immediately.
this is the dumbest shit I've ever heard in my life.
I thought that too until I saw more posts where he digs in even further.
They've won 4 state championships and played in 7 or 8 overall. They had the longest winning streak in NJ a year ago, going undefeated 2 straight seasons.
These most impressive part might be the amount of big time players from such a small town/program. The best would be NFL vet (and great dude for what it's worth) Anthony Fasano. Carlo Calabrese was a starter on a Norte Dame team that played in the National Championship. Dan DePalma won a ring with the Giants as a member of the practice squad. They had other kids Lonney, Kaslander, Canfora, Ferrari go on and have productive college careers at schools like Colgate and Bucknell. Most of these kids were within 6 years of each other.
The youth program is run very well and gets the kids ready. And once they get to high school it's not like they run through an all cupcake schedule either. Mountain Lakes, Hoboken, Cedar Grove and Caldwell all have great programs as well.
My boys played lax so I haven't seen HS football since '74.

Look Rutgers is an excellent school educationally. It's football team is not. While they play in Div 1 the quality of play is not of that caliber. They should not be in the Big ten and as I stated previously would not be competitive in the MAC.

Once again, you are a fucking fool. They aren't a "d1 level program"? This is a program that went to bowl games pretty much yearly from 05 - 12, and had a winning overall record in their first year in the B1G.

Don't bother SY. The guy has a limp dick for Rutgers and it's pathetic.
Probably got wait-listed as a Jersey resident.
That was the last citywide football championship for 20 or 30 years, at least. Of course, that was 1961. Had that happened 20 years later, we would have lost a lot more than our jackets.
have the second oldest high school football rivalry in the country...I believe they have played each other approx.
135 times! Many many years ago, they would play 2X a season.
They annually draw about 10,000 fans for their
Turkey Day classic. I played some QB, until junior year,
back in the day, then I got smart and saved my body for basketball. That was my real passion to play back then.
This game shouldn't play a role, but Nunzio's seat is definitely warm.
That's just one city, not to mention some of the talent that has come from Charlotte.

If he doesn't win states, I wouldn't be surprised if he's done.

I concur, I grew up in West Orange, now live in Verona, this town takes football seriously. my nephew is currently a freshman at VHS.
Go HillBillies!

Sure Cal, Texas, Florida, and NJ show well but not as well as Hampton roads per capita.
But the resources spent are jaw-dropping. Tons of support from boosters - the whole town comes out to every game. Seriously - 90% of the population is there. They buy new uniforms every year for the football team and cheer squad.
And to Eric's point, the approach to the game is over the top, imo. They fly the coaches to conferences a few times a year where they learn about the latest trends in football. The kids are running much more sophisticated plays than ever before.
My problem with it is that this is happening while the schools are failing and kids are not learning basic algebra, or are able to write at even close to a college level by the time they graduate. Many seniors have never read all the way through a 200 page book by themselves.
But that football team - ours is perennially in contention for a state title (not the highest division).
This past weekend, the entire football team (60-70 kids plus about a dozen or so coaches) left on Thursday after school to drive charter buses from Detroit to Cleveland and stayed overnight in a hotel to play a Friday night football game before taking the charter buses back to Detroit afterwards. I know the team has boosters and the trip was most likely paid for by boosters that earmarked the funds specifically for that trip, but the optics are pretty bad given the way the administration is always talking about budget concerns and penny pinching on actual classroom necessities.
It says a lot about the community when they put their dollars behind athletics while academics languish, imo. We had three bonds shot down in a row to repair infrastructure. In one school, they had to use bottled water all year because the water lines were so bad, and the voters shot down a bond to fix the lines. Worst part? The biggest complaint was that those who wrote the bond included $ to build a second (practice) gym for the school.
Meanwhile, the local Jr. High decided not to have a 7th grade team because they had no money for uniforms. A local booster stepped up and paid for all the uniforms on the spot for the entire team. It was that important to them.
