SC QB Sam Darnold....the real deal.

thrunthrublue : 9/17/2017 12:49 am
Great o.t. Game v texas.....sc's walk on freshman field goal kicker wins the game by making the first and second kicks of his career, and darnold has all the talent, arm and swagger of farvre......making him a great future addition to the nfl, or the giants......(if they continue to go "three and out" for the duration of the 2017 season.)
The Jets are tanking for him

One can only hope he pulls a Peyton Manning but doubtful.
Real unimpressive start to that game.

I don't know if he's "real deal" status yet, but I did see some good games last year from him.
think he stays another year, still learning
micky : 9/17/2017 7:44 am : link
but the kid has the intangibles and likely to be a great qb down the line barring anything unforeseen.

The kid will declare. The only reason you stay is to improve your draft stock and get paid more. He already is a top 5 pick and why risk injury next year and dropping?
I didn't see the real deal there
PatersonPlank : 9/17/2017 8:58 am : link
I will also say that for all the talk of so many great QB's this year, and how Webb would have went undrafted if he came out this year, I've seen only two who may be 1st rounders. Those two are Darnold and Rosen, and both of them have a lot of turnovers, and stats no better than Webbs.

A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush, as they say.

Though if the Top 5 included terribly run teams like the Jets he may decide it isn't worth it

.

I had a question about Rosen, saw some of the UCLA game...
did he have knee surgery last year?I noticed he had a brace.
He threw a couple of bad picks, at this EARLY stage, I like
Darnold a bit more....Just at this stage, who knows down the road leading to the draft.
Darnold is a stud

Slightly more mobile stafford type.

Lot of balls in the pocket.
The ot td he stood in and zipped that post.

Kid is a stud

IF Mahomes got drafted 11th overall (I think it was), then Lamar Jackson is obviously going in the first round too, last night's stinker notwitstanding.

Fitzgerald (Miss State) and the OK State kid apparently also have shots to go mid first round.

Agree Josh Allen has been really disappointing - probably moved from #10-15 overall pick to 2nd round with his lousy play first 3 games.

Side note: I do think Baker Mayfield in the 4th/5th round will work out well for a team with an older startng QB.

Last night was the first time I've seen an extended view of him. I agree he's got great ability but I was also a bit surprised by what looks like sloppy mechanics. He rarely steps into a throw. Many of his passes last night were with his weight all on his back foot on his follow through. He still got some zip on the ball but that won't fly at the next level. I'm sure it can be corrected, or maybe it was just last night and not really an issue. Like I said, I haven't seen enough of him, just basing it on one game I've seen in its entirety.
Based on what we have seen in their first NFL years so far
PatersonPlank : 9/17/2017 9:32 am : link
I think last draft class will prove to be a very underrated QB class. Watson and Kizer are already starting. Trubisky, Mahommes, and Webb have all looked good and have showed real potential. Webbs issue is he's behind Eli, an issue none of the others have. Honestly how many times have we seen QB's come out as can't miss guys, and then flop (and vise versa). Never take anything for granted in the grading of QB's.

I agree completely. I was shocked at how consistently he threw off his back foot. His arm is strong enough that he can still throw with a lot of velocity and some accuracy while doing so, but he'd be a lot better with better mechanics.

He would be staying and not declaring this year.

I read a report from Schefter claiming that Darnold and Rosen are considering returning to school next year because they don't want to go to the Jets. How devastating would that be for Jets fan after enduring this season. The only consolation to this terrible season was the thought of getting a franchise QB.

Things can change.
That Rudolph kid looks good as well.

This is shaping up to be one of the most compelling QB classes I have seen in some time.

Rudolph plays in a gimmicky offense with one read and predetermined throws, like RGIII. Might be a tough transition to the next level.

Jets could outsmart them and stink the following year as well.

With that roster I would be shocked if they didn't have a top 3 pick in 2 years.
He is climbing
Sy'56 : 9/17/2017 12:57 pm : link
Still needs to show more consistency with his decision making. But his arrow is pointing up, while Jackson, Rosen, and Allen have been underwhelming so far
I think Rosen is better
dpinzow : 9/17/2017 12:59 pm : link
at least from an NFL standpoint, but Darnold will be very good
Darnold
Marty866b : 9/17/2017 4:41 pm : link
Has not stated if he is returning or not. He has only started 13 games in his college career. My best guess is that stays at USC because he is a different type of kid and he loves it at USC. He does have the gunslinger mentality but is fearless and there is no moment too big for him. Sam loves football. There is some out on the west coast who question Rosen's love for the game. Darnold will be the higher rated prospect if they both come out. There is little doubt that Rosen will.
Stud or not....

NFL is still about coaching a player up, and surrounding that player with talent, so he's not running for his life, i.e. David Carr.
