They've run the football on consecutive downs two times.
Two.
We did it one time against Dallas and one time tonight.
Countless drives have started with a run play for minimal gain followed by Eli in the shotgun on a predictable pass play where he often gets pressured or sacked resulting in a 3rd in long that we don't convert, a 3 and out, and a punt.
I get that the run game looks like garbage, but there were a few occasions where we've run on first down and gained 3-4 yards and then immediately went right to a pass play that resulted in a sack or incompletion.
I really think this team has to try and commit to the run more. I get it, everyone's tired of seeing a 1st down run for no gain - but that isn't always the case. And even if it is, run the ball again.
These defenses just don't worry about running plays because if we run one that gets stuffed, we immediately abandon it. And then the drive usually ends because Eli gets sacked on the next play or whatever pass play we run doesn't work.
I don't care if it's Perkins, Darkwa, Vereen or even Gallman. We need to at least try to establish some semblance of a run game otherwise absolutely nothing is going to open up in the pass game.
I still think McAdoo is a good HC - but he's got to give up the playcalling. It's bad. OL personnel is still a problem but I just can't get behind the play calls. We can't seem to establish anything at all.
As for the running game - IMO, I'm the last guy to play the 'bench XX' game - but Perkins has not looked good at all this season. He did well as a rookie, and seemed to be coming on at the end. Granted, he doesn't have a lot to work with - but he's missed badly on a few of his runs, and Darkwa seems to have run better. Maybe it's time to send a message and give Darkwa more carries, or even go so far as to activate Gallman (not sure if he's ready with protection schemes yet though).
How is it possible that the coaching staff spent a long week preparing for this game and didn't devise an adequate protection scheme? Did they think Flowers could neutralize Ansah one vs. one? Based on what?
Why is our PK kicking off to the sidelines? Why are we running down every play clock down to one second? How is it that our offensive guru still can't figure out a way to defeat cover 2 defenses after three seasons?
He may be a good coach but I have reservations. This team just seems so unprepared.
I agree Perkins has been underwhelming and isn't overcoming ANY poor blocking which a lot of good runners are able to do on occasion.
But just move fucking forward for a couple plays in a row and try to set up a 3rd and short. What did we keep a fullback for if we're not going to utilize having one? We signed a TE who is known for his blocking and can line up in the backfield.
Line up and try to push a pile a few times. We run the ball one time and even if it gains a few yards, we immediately put Eli in the gun and he constantly gets sacked or throws an incompletion. So many drives end this way.
What we're doing obviously isn't working. I don't see how it could hurt to actually make a concerted effort to establish some semblance of a run game.
McAdoo hasn't exactly covered himself in glory over the last year, but letting someone else call the plays probably won't be some magical elixir either.
also, Giants RB are Smith, Gallman, Darkwa and Perkins--4 nobodies. Their receivers are Odell (all-time great), Marshall (HOF), SS (quality SR) and Engram (first round pick).
You don't spend all those picks on receivers and then come out running the ball.
Plus, Giants were behind most of the first two games, so they had to throw the ball. If they get ahead the run stats will look better.
3rd and long? Forget it. We can't protect, we often throw some bullshit underneath pass to a RB or slot WR because it's all we have time for and we fall way short of the marker. That's if we're fortunate enough to not see Eli get sacked.
Make defenses think you actually might run the ball on 2nd downs sometimes. Eventually you'll catch a safety cheating or get a linebacker to bite on a PA pass.
It's too easy to play defense against the Giants. Way too easy.

Is the passing game any better? Beckham doesn't have his wheels right now so the explosion that makes him a threat to take it to the house any time he touches the rock isn't there right now. Marshall is barely seeing targets and dropped a huge pass tonight.
Engram looks like the goods and Shepard has been solid but our passing game doesn't scare anyone right now.
For the passing game to succeed, we're going to have to make defenses actually consider defending something else. Otherwise teams are just going to keep dropping men into coverage leaving Eli with nowhere to go while they pressure him with 4 men anyway.

Ive been saying this since last week. Dallas was weak up front and we didn't even attack them with the running game at all.
two games for a paltry 2.9 YPC .
We watch Vernon run over through and around Flowers an entire
practice who is a very good two way player but he is not a sack artist . My nephew big Phins fan said he wasn't a premium pass rusher but a good player .
to let Flowers go one on one with Ansah was such a miss match
He gets a break this week facing Vinny Curry but can't expect much help with Jernigan and Cox in the middle and whomever
goes against Graham ..
