So last week I checked and wasn't impacted. Now I apparently am.
There's so much information overload out there about what to do to protect yourself. It's such a damn inconvenience to have to go out and pay fees to freeze credit or buy credit monitoring (beyond the one year) due to the inability of a critical organization to protect its data.
What are some of the things you guys are doing to help mitigate the effects of this breach? I hate to think what could happen years down the road with my information.
Credit card numbers were also stolen. I'd say the days of using a debit card for me are over. At least if your credit card is compromised, you can contest the bill and withhold payment. If someone cleans out your checking that'll leave you in a real bind until it can be replaced.
Now, you're entered into a lottery, the kind you don't want to win. The chances of your info being used out of 140 million is still relatively low, but a risk none the same.
If you think freezing your credit is a hassle, think of the hassle created by the entire credit system collapsing. To be honest, I think we've all been living pretty free and easy in terms of credit transactions. A change in how it's done may be coming due to this, but it will be very painful at first.

why in the world would anyone keep substantial sums of cash in a checking account? Good for paying bills and you should know what those are monthly with some small excess.
