as compared to what we have expected from them. We are actually not doing well vs the run this year. Near the bottom in our first two games allowing an avg 133 yards per game.
Stopping there... open discussion for the rest of you to give your thoughts on our defensive performance so far after two games. Especially since ALL of the talk has been about the offense and McAdoo.

I actually find it odd that there is so much talk swirling around about a defensive mutiny. They are not playing well enough to worry about what's going on with the O right now.
3rd down hasnt been good.
Run defense as you noted.
Tackling has been dreadful.
JPP only one generating consistent pass rush.
The D is not getting any calls. Their line is being absolutely mugged on every play.
At least you see the adjustments by Spags in the second half. They are the reason why we are not getting completely blown out..
Agree but I also seem to remember us giving up at least one big play in each game that killed us. Eli Apple (yesterday) at the goal line for example. An under thrown ball that any professional corner should have been able to defend.
An earlier post pointed out that we are not getting the pass rush that we need. That creates turnovers.
We also let both QBs leak out of the pocket too easily picking up first downs with their legs. Yesterday, we had him trapped for a 10 yard loss and he ended up turning it into a huge gain.
It should also be noted that Goodson and Jenkins were huge losses last night.
That is certainly part of it, but the defense has something to do with TOP as well. A few 3 and outs would help, and the D went 6 quarters before getting their first. They allowed DET 10 minutes TOP in the first quarter, which helped DET set their tempo.
Not suggesting that the D is the problem, but they have clearly been worse than last year.
Thompson is the guy that's disappointed if you want to find someone to point at. Not seeing the advertised ball skills and just meh vs the run.
Second, don't be so quick to crucify Thompson. This is essentially his rookie season. Remember how many peoplwe wanted to run Collins out of town?

Starts and ends here - the offense has done such a piss poor job they've hung the D out to dry. https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/average-time-of-possession-net-of-ot - ( New Window )

The defense actually got a 3 and out their first series of the year - and then the refs decided to gift Dallas a spot a full yard ahead of where the ball ended up.
From that point on - the D had to play against a Dallas team content to just continue running the ball, knowing the Giants weren't going to do anything offensively. They wore them down, and 3 and outs (but not stops) were virtually impossible without selling out to stop the run.
Last night - absent their best corner and playing a MLB who was undrafted and basically third on the depth chart with very little notice, they allowed 17 points, with 10 of those coming after the offense or STs handed them the ball in our territory, once in scoring position.
I do think the defense could play better - but right now there's not much to point to as far as the defense playing poorly.

+1👏
Teams do not have to play us balls to the wall on offense....just get the lead and take time off the clock....
Dak missed a lot of throws last week...
Stafford only threw 21 passes, but completed 15.....
This defense has trouble pressuring the qb with only 4 rushing the qb.....
We still have problems covering TE's.....
If I am OC, I attack Apple and basically ignore the FS position of the Giants...the position does not make plays....
A good passing attack, will shred this defense, and if they have a good running game, good grief....
I saw Jenkins get beat last week, but Dak missed some throws.....of course that is just one game.....but we can't have Jenkins missing time out there, either....
DRC does not look like DRC.....
Apple still looks like a rookie sometimes.....
Where is the Collins of last season?
Goodson looked good for one game, can he continue?
Kennard made a few plays....
It didn't take Thomas long to get hurt....
This defense has to remain healthy, and it will be solid....but this offense is putting too much pressure on it.....at some point, if this offense does not improve, it's just hard to go out there and play for a losing team.....and this defense will be affected by it....
He was excellent in coverage last year, eliminated teams TE's which freed up Collins to make plays. Collins has been stuck with playing it conservative as he has to maintain focus in the box, and be ready to go defend deep. Thompson hasn't impressed me, team needs a rangy FS to help over the top and let Collins do his thing.
Jenkins is a huge part of this Defense, and Apple is still figuring it out. I like the skills Apple has, but he is making mistakes out there right now. I have faith he will get better though. DRC is starting to show his age, they need to find his replacement sooner than later.
Once the D gets healthy I think they are capable of being Elite again, that means getting Robinson, Goodson, Jenkins all out there again together. This Defense needs a 3rd pass rusher to step up. JPP and Vernon are going to wear down again, I'd like to see something from someone at the position.
So far, Tomlinson looks real good, and I imagine he will only get better. They need Goodson back though, Munson is ok depth but not a guy you want coming in playing a full game cause he will get exposed.
- 54 yards (TD)
- 29 yards (TD)
- 37 yards (56 yard FG)
People are nitpicking on what is still a unit playing very well. One thing that's happened is their first 2 opponents have picked on the units few weaknesses... Linebackers in coverage (screen passes), free safety in coverage, and Eli Apple.
He should have had a pick last night. Didn't even make a play on the ball.
Munson doesn't belong on the field as a starter. He gets run out of the play consistently.
The last two weeks both opposing offenses started sitting on the ball in the 3rd quarter. Detroit was moving yesterday in the second half and then got the two holding penalties in a row to be first and 30. As it is they only came up a couple of yards short. When the defense needed to get the ball back, they let Detroit run off the last 4 minutes of the game.
Don't be fooled, the defense is not as dominant as last season nor should we have expected it.
I think Hankins is missed as well.
Defense has been asked to shoulder a tremendous burden already this season. They've been good under those circumstances. Detroit had something like 250 yards of offense last night. That should be good enough to win.

So your argument is they "might've" had ONE drive where they went the length of the field to score points if not for those 2 penalties? Look at the length of their actual scoring drives... they had 2 short fields for TDs, then made a 56 yard FG.
The defense did get the offense the ball back at 17-10 and 24-10 and both times, the offense failed to capitalize. Focusing on a drive when the game was basically over is unfair.
Don't be fooled, the defense is not as dominant as last season nor should we have expected it.
We cannot expect this defense to perform at last year's level. In fact, during pre-season I actually said our offense will need to be better this year somehow than last year because our D cannot keep up that pace. With the defense coming back down to earth a bit and the offense looking worse than even last year.... it is not looking good.
