why doesnt he call time out before the field goal? They were already down and with a minute to go and 2 timeouts you should be able to do a lot. Did they just figure they were getting the ball in the second half anyhow? Can't even imagine what they were thinking.
it could be simple bad time management but I don't think so

At this level that would be very sad if that were the case.

In that case, why not just punt on 1st down each possession?
I was thinking about this today and maybe he thought that if he calls a TO, Detroit then has more time to think about going for it and running a better play.
Whats the argument against taking the timeout there? There was 1:10 left on the clock when they were stopped on 3rd down. If Prater misses that kick they get the ball back at midfield with a minute left and 2 timeouts.
Even if you wanted to be conservative heading to half, why not use the extra time to see if you could bust a run or screen? I really hated that.
I believe it was 4th and 4, just inside the 40. That is an ideal time an place to go for it on fourth down. Call time out, you give them time to set a play, run it and then have time left over to score if its successful. That actually was a classic Coughlin blunder. He got burned by that quite a few times.
Don't call the time out and they go for a 56 yarder. That was probably a better chance of keeping them scoreless, and definitely avoided the possibility of giving up seven to end the half.
And conversely, 40 seconds on the clock for our offense wasn't likely to help much.

My only counter to that is the Lions had their own timeouts. If they wanted to go for it on 4th down, they could have called their own timeout. And the Giants have a good defense. I have no problem if a timeout forces them to go for it on 4th down.
I just hate not being aggressive there, especially in last nights game where you needed to turn things around..
our calling a TO shouldn't have affected DET as they had their own heading into the half. There is a reason they didn't take them... b/c they got to kick the FG and run time off the clock.
But we preferred that the clock run down. We were betting on a missed field goal as the best possible outcome. They were willing to take that bet. And they were right, by the skin of their teeth.
But if we called the timeout, they could have easily changed their plans and burned us badly. McAdoo studied Coughlin's game management failures, and this was one of them. Have too much confidence in 1) your defense stopping them and 2) the offense capitalizing and turning it into points. An honest assessment was that that was pretty unlikely
The chance of Detroit exploiting it were much greater. They had the ball. They were in control.
