NFT: Yankees Sept 19th - happy thread

section125 : 9/19/2017 9:12 am
I started this just because of the disaster that was NY Giants Football last night. I opened a few Giants threads and commented but want to stay away.

So Chapman looked great last night. Best command I've seen all season. What ever the pitching coaches did, they straightened him (and his fastball) out.

Betances - I noticed he had several pitches where he sped up his delivery. Not that I know pitching mechanics, but having seen Betances throw for a few years, I could see that he rushed the ball home. Kind a like, you can see something is not right, but you don't know what it is. He is just out of sorts.

Judge - it is time for him to recognize that he will be getting sliders outside the zone(low and away) on 75% of the pitches he sees. He might want to try laying off that 1st pitch unless it is in a specific place..how many times does he get behind 0-2 swinging at crap low and away? It kills him. Also, go with the pitch if you are swinging at a low and away one. Seems that he is getting most of the right side open between 1st and 2nd because of the shift and still trying to pull that pitch... He is too good of a hitter to constantly swing at garbage. I think he has a realistic capability of being a .300 hitter.

Time to start thinking of the post season roster.. who makes it and who does not. Going to be a few disappointed players.

I know it doesn't help us with the Bosox, but in terms of clinching the #1 WC every win over the Twins is a twofer.

but it bodes very well for us that we're already this close. Dombrowski has blown his load to build a title team, while we're still ascending. I'll take our young studs over theirs, and we still have free agency splashes to make over the next two winters.

Yep. And let's not forget, next season we have the call-ups of Gleyber Torres and Chance Adams to look forward to.
Interesting trend with Sale too
Stu11 : 9/20/2017 12:46 am : link
his 2nd half #'s have dropped off a lot the past 2 seasons. Seems like he can't sustain it for 6 months. That does not bode well when you stop playing the Jays/A's and O's and start playing the Astros and Indians...
Judge is far from a finished product.
manh george : 9/20/2017 2:34 am : link
I start with the premise that a 6'7" 280 pound 24-year-old baseball player is NEVER a finished product. Oversized athletes simply take longer to peak. And then, I consider that his swing isn't a mature one, despite the home run output. A mature swing includes at least some use of the lower half.

I also have strong hopes that, over time, he will learn to use his lower half. A swing that includes the legs and hips stays in the hitting zone longer, keeps the bat in contact with the ball longer, has more time to put the bat in motion, has better plate coverage, and has less tendency to pull off the ball. All of that also means less tendency to swing at pitches well out of the strike zone.

Will he ever have a Greg Bird swing? Highly unlikely. But over the next couple of years, I expect that he will develop a much more mature swing--he's a smart kid, who wants to learn. And, I am confident that he knows that getting the lower half into the swing will make him a better hitter overall. If that happens, the outcome could be really amazing. No reason to think of him as a .280 hitter when he really matures. I expect that even by next season, he will come back with improved technique.

By the way, he has been quoted saying that Greg Bird is the best hitter on the team. So, he knows what swing he wants to emulate in germs of technique.
Respectfully disagree, Manh
Kyle in NY : 9/20/2017 8:56 am : link
I think Judge does use his lower half effectively. He has very good mechanics, I always enjoy watching the side view of his swing in slow motion. I believe it was Keith Hernandez when we played the Mets that commented on how much he likes his swing mechanics.

If anybody isn't getting the lower half involved, it's Bird. And I think it's contributed to his struggles. Some of that is injury related though.
You don't hit the ball
Kyle in NY : 9/20/2017 8:58 am : link
as hard and as far as he has if you're swinging all arms/upper half. I don't care how strong or big you are.

This really isn't about an opinion.
manh george : 9/20/2017 11:18 am : link
One of the broadcasts over the weekend showed a side-by-side of the two swings. As they discussed and showed, Bird rotates his hips, turns his legs, shifts his weight and gets a lot of his power from his lower half. Amazingly, Judge gets all of that remarkable power without doing any of that. All of the rotation is in the torso, which means that he generates massive bat speed, but his bat doesn't spend much time in the hitting zone. Unless the video was wrong, or O'Neil's analysis of what was clearly on the screen was wrong. Think Madagan or Mattingly or Tino Martinez for proper lower half engagement. Or Jessie Jackson (who loves Bird's swing, btw).

And Judge really was quoted in the NY Post as saying that Bird is the best hitter on the team. And, I expect Judge to learn to get his lower half properly engaged, over time. He will strike out a lot less when he does.

Jessie Jackson?

We know he was icing his knees down after every game for a while, and there were a bunch of times during his slump where it looked like he was trying to get his shoulder to loosen up. .275/.415/.775, 6 homers in his last two weeks. Very nice to have him rounding back into form.
I remember opening day 1978 when the fans threw all those

"Jessie" bars on the field ...

Hey mg - I don't have a current email for you, but I'm at the same place as always. Shoot me an email.
Judge's left shoulder was wrapped in ice quite a bit, too.
bceagle05 : 9/20/2017 12:25 pm : link
I know he had 30HRs at the break, but I think he had 27 at the actual halfway point of the season. If he winds up with 18-20 in the second half, it's really not that steep a drop off, especially with the injury.

Whenever this season ends, I'm going to want to fast forward right to spring training to get things going again. Very exciting times.
With a week and a half left in the season, Judge leads the AL in
Del Shofner : 9/20/2017 12:26 pm : link
six offensive categories: Runs, HRs, BBs, OBP, SLG and OPS. Pretty amazing for a rookie.

Judge is always going to give credit to others first. He is Jeter-esque that way. He may decrease on K's a bit but he's always going to be a heavy three outcomes player. And that's fine. Give me that .400 OBP with 40+ HR any day.

I don't see it with Bird. don't get me wrong, I like the player. But nobody has gotten more hype out of a few good weeks two years ago than this kid. Two seasons essentially lost now. It's got to happen next season or the Yankees might be inclined to move on. No matter how much Jessie Jackson likes his swing :)
I think Bird is a legit talent
Greg from LI : 9/20/2017 12:38 pm : link
But I also think that his injuries have set him back significantly, to the point that it's hard to say what he'll become. He can't make any progress if he can't stay on the field for any length of time.

Anyway, since Phil mentioned that tweet, I went to RAB's twitter to see what Judge actually said, and found this.

hahahaha
LOL!

Frazier's strong clubhouse rep seems well deserved.
Yep
Greg from LI : 9/20/2017 12:50 pm : link
I didn't think he'd be brought back next year under any circumstances, but now I'm not so sure. He's been fairly productive, can play a few positions, and is a popular guy in the clubhouse. If nothing else, keeping him around provides some insurance if/when Bird is injured again next year.

Plus, it's Torres insurance. We can also DH one of the extra OF everyday, keeping Frazier's glove in the field.

I don't think we'll need a traditional DH next year with the surplus OF.
I had no idea Frazier was THIS good a defender.
bceagle05 : 9/20/2017 12:57 pm : link
If Headley and Castro are both in the plans for next year, I can't image there's room for him with Bird, Torres and Andujar around to man the corners. One of Headley/Frazier would be sufficient as a 1B/3B swing guy, unless Castro is moved to open up second base for Gleyber sometime in 2018.
And you know he'd love to come back
Kyle in NY : 9/20/2017 12:59 pm : link
I could see it. He plays a great 3B and he really grinds out ABs
Good point about the DH.
bceagle05 : 9/20/2017 12:59 pm : link
The days of the everyday Matt Holliday-type DH should be over for the Yankees. We should have four or five guys rotating through that spot in the lineup next season.

He sees a ton of pitches. Can't undervalue that...
well, right off the top you know Sanchez will get a handful of DHs
Greg from LI : 9/20/2017 1:06 pm : link
18 this year, and he missed a month. Probably 25-30 next year. Judge probably gets 10-15 too to ease the toll all that running at 280 pounds takes on his legs.
Also, I think Castro gets traded this offseason
Greg from LI : 9/20/2017 1:09 pm : link
His value is probably as high as it will ever be, and Didi is the better player. Just too many mental mistakes, subpar defense, and too much of a hacker. So Torres takes over second and then you could have Frazier take Holliday's roster spot.

What return are you thinking?

SP? Prospects?
probably pitching
Greg from LI : 9/20/2017 1:19 pm : link
I'm not sure you're getting much in the way of prospects for Castro - the Yankees pipeline is pretty full as it is. Right now, there are only two sure bets for the 2018 rotation, Severino and Gray. Tanaka could opt out, and if he does he's gone. Cashman already said they won't pursue him. I *think* CC keeps chugging along on one-year deals, but that's just speculation. Garcia is a UFA and I don't see them bringing him back. Monty hasn't quite established himself yet, IMO. They need some more options.
Yeah, they don't need to jam up the minors with more talent...
manh george : 9/20/2017 1:28 pm : link
that will likely need to be traded any way. IF they decide to move Castro--I'm not convinced--it has to be for starting pitching.
