I still cant get over the "reverse" to shepard on the short side of the field that went in the same exact direction as the RB. How is it a misdirection play when you have the guy with the ball going in the same exact direction as the fake? All you are doing is giving the defense a head start.
Probably the most destined to fail play i have ever seen. Just awful design.
Let that sink in.
I'd rather run into the line rather than lose 7 yards but hey thats just me.
Point is we are limited with what we can do. It's hard to gameplan during the week, and call plays knowing you can't pass block and run block.

See this is wrong thinking. A run into the line is a no gain or short loss. You lose 7 yards, with this offense and you might as well punt. Though we screwed that up last night too.

So why are you running a play that gives the defense a head start? Wouldnt actual misdirection make more sense? Why would you give the defense a head start to get in front of the runner?
You rang?
It just might work ... maybe wildcat with Odell at QB?
I think the OP was saying that the problem is not with the Giants running a reverse, it is the design of the play. I heard the OP saying that when you run a reverse, you run the ball in the opposite direction of where the back is expected to go, hence the term "reverse". If you run it in the same direction, then it kind of defeats the purpose. Makes sense, it does sound kind of stupid.

I'm at a loss as to how our running game is so bad. How can we not get 5 yards against 3 or 4 DL and the LBs and safeties paying so deep? It's almost impossible

We can't run the ball.. We can't pass protect on deeper passing concepts, such as 5 or 7 step passing concepts. We can't even pass protect on 3 step passing concepts. So what play would you like to call?

Yes, but the defense knows it too. You don't think there was a sense of let's try whatever to get this offense going? I can imagine a 2nd year HC getting booed at home on national Tv was thinking let's try something to get this offense going. Moreover, what did the guys upstairs tell him? Did they see something regarding the formation of the defense that dictated them to let Ben M. to run that play?
These are the things that go on that fans are privy too. It isn't as cut and dry as calling a play for the sake of it.

Exactly. Running a reverse is fine. Trying to get cute and run a fake reverse where the receiver goes the same way as the back makes no sense. Just run a double reverse if you think you have that play set up. That way there is some misdirection.
Normally, when you can't hold off a rush, you slow it down with screen passes.
The last time a Giants team was effective at running screens was.....?
Our O got the ball and I was saying 'run it, run it, run it':
(that is where you want to
1- calm down and take control of the game,
2. the game clock,
3. even a field goal here can be considered a 10pt swing, as the fumble sack recovery probably prevented a lions score, in addition,
4. given the state of our OL, any pass becomes an injury or INT risk, which lack of pass pro is cured by
5. successful runs by the way)
in addition, a low % possession maintenance play design
if its wide 9 pass rush, you run from under center zip quick up the gut.
if its a blitz, you run the opposite way, as lions dud last night.
if these are not in the playbook and practiced, you loose.
its as if we lost "book 4 out of 4" i.e. 25% of the typical football playbook at someones house party and forgot to go back and get it.
