No mention of Roger Lewis on punt coverage?

SLIM_ : 9/19/2017 11:31 am
He was in my mind a very good gunner last year. We just cut King and he didn't get a jersey last year a good portion of the time as Lewis showed his worth on punt coverage.

I think the PR touchdown was on him. He was the outside guy, he didn't maintain his leverage and the return was able to take it outside. This took Harris completely out of the coverage and for the most part DeOssie. One of the bigger plays of the game and that play in combination with the Marshall drop was the nail in the coffin.

From poor route running, bad off the field decisions, etc., Lewis appears to be a dumb player. Dumb players usually lose games. This was one example of dumb players making dumb plays.

Special teams sucks

... but I have no confidence in this offense whatsoever even if they made the tackle and the defense made a stop

Defense makes big play ... Eli makes terrible throw leading to tipped INT on literally the next play - that's when I knew this game was over.

Eli is done, this OL is embarrassing, and yes the special teams suck too

I honestly don't even want to watch next week ... Cox is going to break Eli in half
Ellison should've had him

DeOssie also took a horrible angle.
Yeah, whenever

The cut of a promising positional player is explained by, "the other guy is a better ST player," I'm always incredibly skeptical. How much better can he make a unit that's destined to be below average more seasons than not?
I think the idea of cutting serviceable players

because they can't contribute to special teams is stupid at this point. It doesn't matter...our special teams fuck up anyway.
So many issues, so little time

We'll get to him

wasn't a thing of beauty either.
Yes, Lewis played it poorly

and then it was compounded by the missed tackles....

But it became magnified after the Marshall drop....
I'm non Quinn fan

But that was just great individual effort on the KR. Guy just had a great return
...and Dwayne Harris has done actually

what during his tenure at five times the salary? I've been critical of Lewis for some of his piss poor decisions, but he is far from the whipping post most on this forum like to make themselves believe is somewhat of a remedy for this dismal start. Oh, and Brandon, guy looks totally lost in a football uniform. Watch your screen next game, on most punts he's (Lewis) the first one in your view and if there is a bitch about coverage or tackling perhaps that sentiment should be brought up with that special team's guru Quinn! You do understand what the role of a gunner is right? Jesus!

Whenever the opposition returner drops a punt it turns into a huge gain; when our guy does it turns into an opposition huge gain?
Funny how that works.
at least we knew

where he was on the return. how can a returner run up the sideline that we punted to and only have to make 2 guys miss.
Lewis has always been terrible

at actually tackling a returner. His "good" plays are when he downs an uncontested punt or stands close by while a fair catch is made.

Check out the replay of the TD and freeze as Lewis approaches the 20 yard line. Then go frame by frame. He has a clear shot at a returner who is preparing to make a catch but he is not preparing to make a tackle. He crosses from his right gunner position to a spot three yards left of the returner to avoid contact with a returner who has not signaled for a fair catch.

Just last week we saw Lewis stand dumbfounded when the Cowboy punt returner returned the ball rather than make a fair catch.

Lewis's plan A is to down the ball if it hits the turf. His plan B is to stand and watch a fair catch. He has absolutely no interest in tackling.

For this (and the occasional dink and dunk reception) Lewis is gifted a roster spot. NYG compromised its principles to sign him in the first place and is getting what it deserves for stubbornly refusing to admit that it did so for nothing.
