I posted this in a separate thread but figure maybe it got lost in the shuffle.
Guys, it was unbearable to wade through all the trash in the game thread last night. Could we not have a function where posters who registered on that day have a waiting period before posting, perhaps just for gamedays?
It should be one of the best things about BBI to come on and compare notes during a game with other die-hards. Yeah I realize it gets nasty when the Giants play like garbage. But I'd rather suffer through that with real BBI'ers than a bunch of mealy-mouthed trolls and dupes who just registered that day for the purpose of ruining the experience for everyone else. I hate to say it, but if not addressed, it's going to get to where following beat writers on twitter in-game is preferable to checking in to BBI.
I know you always say to let you know if that kind of activity is going on...to bring it to your attention so you can deal with it. But this is more about adjusting the system/controls than singling out some user who will be deleted and then just come right back under another IP address as another troll.
What can be done about this?
I may get drilled for this post, but I've been on BBI for 15 years, so I can take it (i.e. Come at me bro!). Hopefully this is taken as constructive and will lead to some adjustments that will improve the gameday thread experience.
Maybe he wasn't a dupe - but you thought that was upholding the TOS?
Again - if that's the view you guys have taken of trolls, then you've already lost and it's not close.
jcn -- if he continues to post that way he will lose his account -- but maybe it was just a bad night - we are giving him the benefit of the doubt for now
[quote] You mean that elderly fellow who got the bum-rush last week after he called out the coach?
That looked like a gang-up and bullying to me, its obviously fair to critique coaching at any time, much less recently, and he was not wrong so far.
Or was that a different Grizz?
If, same guy, we need to self monitor and not loose our way here people. [/quote
turns out that grizz299 is a cowboys fan -- on several cowboys fan sites -- and he intentionally and consistently posts the names of our players inside out and backwards to annoy
Gamethreads aren't worth it any more.
!00% correct. It was a dupe of that idiot 32_Razor, this week it was the multiple posts using some childish name shit and last week it was over 12 posts about OBJ's hair.
I understand how hard it is to clean up the 15 other trolls who make a comment here or there but when you have such an obvious pattern week in and out that is a weak excuse

There was one very obvious troll there - dead giveaway being the namecalling towards Eli and the lack of any other activity - I started a thread outside the game thread to point it out - that thread got deleted, that poster remained.

And I called him out on a thread last weak and that also got deleted yet he stayed. So I have no idea who this dickhead has pics of but for two weeks in a row the same exact thing happening is no coincidence
Again - if that's the view you guys have taken of trolls, then you've already lost and it's not close.
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree about this conclusion -- we've cleaned up a lot of trolls in the past six months -- but we try to implement a fair and balanced approach to this, and not leap to conclusions without some solid evidence

Which is exactly why I proposed adjusting the system/controls so that posters who have joined the day of the game (or say, within 48 hours) be put in read-only status. It would surely help a lot, and it shouldn't cause the mods to have to police quite as much. Unless there's not such a capability (which is why I also directed this to Gary), I can't imagine a reason not to put such a system in place. The alternative...users going elsewhere for banter with other fans...doesn't seem to me like what BBI needs.
What you could do is have the 30 day probation period AFTER they make their first post. And if there is no activity by them for 6 months they get auto deleted

Well, agree to disagree then. I can understand not wanting to ban borderline, but... it's basically the equivalent of electronic diarrhea being smeared on the game thread repeatedly.

I fought this battle years ago.
It's has all the drama of a political thread, but because it is during a game, the inmates get to run the asylum for a few hours.
It is a football site remember.
The tape is even erased after the crime so there is no evidence of the idiocy.
If you want to play in the asylum, do so.
If not, don't
It's really that simple.

Please stop calling people "dupes". If you have a serious concern about a poster, please message the mods. I have created a number of tools to ferret out bad actors. Nothing is perfect, but I think it all works pretty well.
Honestly, if you can't take people talking shit on the game thread, stay out of the game thread. Game threads on this site have always had some of that going on.
Personally - if the option is to let that guy slide while encouraging anyone who doesn't want to deal with it to just avoid the game thread altogether, it won't be too long before you've got nothing but that crap in the game thread.
Not a problem for me, Reddit's been doing a good job on game day as far as game threads are concerned.

Hi Gary!
Maybe you guys should consider placing a moratorium on game threads, seeing as how all that vitriol seems to be spilling over into other threads.
Thanks!
I think a civil thread bringing to light the problem is more productive than folks jumping in and confronting bad actors and causing chaos as has been the case before.
Re: game threads, for a number of years I've understood it that you all prefer to keep the game conversation in that thread, so if it's where the team wants us, I vote it ok to after the fact point out the folks who seem to only be there to irritate. Dupe or just a garden variety asshole.
I personally really enjoy the threads and the contributions from folks following Twitter, listening to the radio broadcast etc. There are sound contributions from a number of folks.
I don't think anyone is asking you guys to monitor the thread, that sucks and isn't fair.
This person would have to be a pretty dedicated troll. Both posters have multiple IP addresses and there's no overlap.
Looking at the IP info, both of them post on BBI from an iPhone, but they use different cell phone providers.

Avenge Berrylish!
She asked to banned. She knew and took a measured step that would result in banning. She even said it after she was banned that she knew what she posted would lead to it. I am as sick as many others over it - but it was her choice.
Constantly raising it as opposed to what other posters are allowed to get away with - is really an unfair assertion.
We will keep our eye on that -- thanks for pointing it out
also I agree with you about jcn -- his comments are taken seriously, investigated and he is respected. He has a point - and his comments are not lost on us.
Mook -- I won't deny that it's taking me a while to completely figure out this mod thing, but I assure you that I, and all of the Mods, look in the mirror and weigh our actions and that we talk to each other about decisions we make. So as a matter of process, I hope I am improving as a Mod.
they did have similar MOs -- but guess what -- they are both gone now
Thanks for taking the time to answer questions Mods
If you think someone is actually dupe, or you otherwise feel they're breaking the rules, send an e-mail to moderators@. Don't post call out threads or other nonsense on the Forum. You're not helping.
Seriously, the instructions for reporting abusing behavior are pinned to the top of the Forum and have been for nearly two years now. I am linking them at the bottom of this comment for your convenience. If you haven't bothered to read them yet, I ask that you do so now.
I have developed, over the years, a fairly comprehensive set of tools that helps me find out who is a dupe and who isn't. I look at IP addresses, browser strings, login patterns and a few other things. Nothing is foolproof, but I feel reasonably confident that I can ferret out most dupes, given a bit of a heads up.

Then once you wouldn't allow for that any longer and essentially neutered or ran off many of those members who actually helped to "police" the site. You have since ran into the problem of trying to monitor it all on your own, which admittedly you all now often say takes too much effort and time do truly do effectively.
Hell, I have a simo jackass emailing me and bragging he has 5 handles while telling me he's going to harass me whenever he can here and there's nothing I can do about it.
It is fairly obvious who is on the board to interact and who is here just to stir shit up. Whether they are called dupe, troll or fuckwad, does it really matter?

Hey FMiC, I was wondering how they are getting your email. Then I clicked your profile and see you have it listed. Hah. Might want to take it down if you're getting harassed consistently.
I'm just pointing out that you have people who exist on the board to stir shit and they can do it with multiple handles.
But calling them dupes is the problem......

Gary, thanks for your replies. Gppd tp hear there's a gatekeeping element for approval of new posters on game days. Didn't know that.
What's the official position/reasoning against a waiting period for new members to post? Seems like it would cull out a good bit of the troll element.

A very cogent post by my favorite Kentucky colonel!
I've long advocated that registration be confined to a couple of months in the offseason, but it ain't my sandbox.

steve -- respectfully -- this is nonsense -- all we said is that we'd rather watch the game than police the game threads -- that does not equate to saying it takes too much time and effort to truly do effectively
in effect we do encourage policing -- but not taking direct action on a thread
we do go on game threads when it is requested however

I wasn't using this one example for the point I was making. I can't count how many times I have read responses that stated how Eric or moderators have lives and don't have the time to (insert whatever problem was being discussed) deal with it. Eric even mentioned that he was busy moderating a large 100,000+ member site elsewhere which takes up much of his time in one response.
Look I agree you can't be expected to devote too much time, and I certainly wouldn't expect or ask you to forgo watching the game. So that brings us back to my original point and why I drew the distinction between what the few of you can realistically accomplish moderating the site effectively compared to when Eric used to ask the community to collectively police it.

Steve -- I understand your point -- and we do encourage self-policing in the form of notifying the mods of issues that are observed
The problem with self-policing directly on a thread is that some of us don't know how to restrain ourselves or observe the discretion of only policing a poster in need of policing. It takes the form of abusive behavior. Self-policing without restraint can take over threads and create multiple chit storms instead of threads.
We want to expand our audience - and those types of instances/thread activity inhibit expansion - so we made a policy of attack the post and not the poster. We think this is a good policy and we are committed to it.
Any poster that has a beef with a poster's activities can bring it to our attention. One of the Mods will definitely follow up on it and that includes activity on game threads.
I am not saying I have all the answers, and I can understand that things can't stay as they were when I first arrived some twenty years ago. The site caught on and grew and with that come forced changes. The thing is those changes seemed driven largely by eliminating whatever most became an irritant to Eric when people started complaining to him. I appreciate that because I wouldn't ever put up with it but it just feels like as a result the tail is sometimes wagging the dog and as a result this site has lost a massive amount of quality members and their great insights.
Maybe it is just because I have been here for twenty years it feels more that way, and maybe most won't agree with me. LOL probably most that would agree have left the site long ago. All I know is I find that I am visiting the site much less than in the past, and certainly don't post as much as a result. I'm sure Eric will just think that's fine, there are plenty more new people arriving to replace each one of the old timers that fall through the cracks. I'm not angry, I'm not making one of those "I am leaving posts", not my style to begin with and also because I haven't left. I will still check in and post when I feel inclined to. I just find that is less frequent these days. I'm just offering my point of view that something is just "off" in the forum. I'm not a tech savvy guy so I don't know all the ins and outs of finding trolls, and to tell the truth in all these years I have never called anyone a troll. I never could understand how so many people could keep track of who might be who. LOL I don't usually even remember who insulted me in a post a day or two later. But it seems like just with some common sense you can tell who is a valved member and who is posting drivel just to incite a reaction or disrupt. Feels like sometimes those of you in authority sometimes react in order to prove that authority, or because of a perceived slight, all the while not seeing the forest for the trees. IMHO it has been a detriment to the forum.
Well I wasn't expecting to get into all this, and this has certainly gone longer than I intended, and once again believe me I truly am not trying to insult anyone and apologize if it comes off that way. Just felt included to give my perspective.
