Odds on Spags Getting the Bump if Benny Mac Tossed?

TC : 9/19/2017 4:24 pm
.
Giants are
map7711 : 9/19/2017 4:28 pm : link
Not the type of organization to fire a HC in the season. If they actually do that, which the odds on that are about 1%, then yes Spags is the guy.
If Ben is gone everyone is gone

McAdoo is not getting fired.
Brown Recluse : 9/19/2017 4:30 pm : link
Not for a while anyway. He bought himself some time by going 11-5 last season.

Sullivan might get
BigBlueDownTheShore : 9/19/2017 4:30 pm : link
a shot too. He was considered a Head Coaching replacement for TC for a while, before his career imploded in Tampa Bay.
Exactly. 11-5 gets him one bad year.

He's not getting fired during the season.
the giants
japanhead : 9/19/2017 4:33 pm : link
are about to go three weeks where their offense totals fewer than 20 points, combined. i mean, they've scored 13 points in two weeks. that has never happened in the history of the franchise, and this is a team with one of the best QBs in the game (yes, i still consider eli a top 10 qb in the league). if this continues, mcadoo should absolutely be let go in-season. this offense has shade of 2013, maybe worse, and mcadoo is supposed to be an offensive-minded guy.
When was the last time the Giants
Section331 : 9/19/2017 4:36 pm : link
fired a HC in-season? Bill Arnsparger? That was 40 years ago. Even Ray Handley, who deserved firing more than any coach I've ever seen, made it through the season.

Barring an epic meltdown, I don't see them firing McAdoo in-season, and if they do fire him afterwards, I don't see Spags making it either. He certainly won't be the HC.
He won't be fired during the season.
Diver_Down : 9/19/2017 4:38 pm : link
If the Offense continues to shit the bed, then Ben won't see year 3 of his contract. It will be considered severance pay for his efforts. Spags would likely be tasked with the HC duties for a limited time.
I wasn't necessarily thinking in-season.
TC : 9/19/2017 4:46 pm : link
But irrespective of when, wonder if Spags has a shot? He's got history with the Giants that predates Benny Mac, has a fairly successful D, and actual HC experience, though he bombed. As did Belichick, though I don't confuse the two!)

That plus the Giants penchant for the comfort factor of staying in-house is what makes me wonder.
last year
japanhead : 9/19/2017 4:46 pm : link
i believed that the offensive struggles could be pinned on 1) a weak OL, 2) a forked victor cruz, and 3) no starting quality TEs, and that this was the reason for trotting the same personnel out there for 97% of all plays.. this offseason, the giants fixed 2 of those three problems and the unit looks to be worse. of course they probably won't fire him in-season bar an epic meltdown or if he loses the team in disastrous fashion. not sure that's the right call, but it's certainly the mara way..
Spags would get the interim hc

If MacAbum gets fired
If you know
oldog : 9/19/2017 5:20 pm : link
how to stop offenses, maybe you can generate them too. Importantly, to my knowledge, Spags does not throw his players under the bus. Spags, a proven failure yes, but everyone deserves a second shot.
Giants won't do it
Sammo85 : 9/19/2017 5:22 pm : link
They'll keep him through next season even if this year and next year go into toilet.

My guess is Giants plan to give or get McAdoo a QB he wants sometime in the next couple years.

Or maybe you hire a GOOD OC, and let them do their job.(You know, like some other NFL teams do!)
Spags as HC option
Big_Pete : 9/19/2017 5:31 pm : link
Firstly, this is way too early to have this kind of discussion. McAdoo is stll a young coach,he will be given a shot to right the ship.

Should McAdoo be fired, Spagnuolo will almost certainly be in the mix. He was one of the candidates to replace Coughlin and the defence has significantly imporved under his tenure here (for the second time).

I actually think Jerry Reese is more likely than McAdoo to be fired after the season (and that may not be that likely). If that did happen, I would imagine Dave Gettleman would be a strong option.

The Giants ownership in general are very patience and avoid knee jerk reactions. We are 'only' 0-2 at this point, lets see how we respond over the season, sure it is a big ask, but it can happen. We should remember we went 0-2 in 2007 and turned it around.
Personally, I'd like to see Spags get another shot at head coach.
Mark C : 9/19/2017 5:36 pm : link
He was dealt a bad hand in St. Louis. I'm sure he learned a lot from that experience, and there are plenty of hall of fame coaches (Bellichik comes to mind) who flamed out in their first head coaching gig.
Given the Giants
old man : 9/19/2017 5:56 pm : link
long standing policy of letting contracts fully play out, both players(giving them every chance to succeed) and coaches, a Ben firing is not likely.
And neither a Reese firing:-(.
Reese built this team with weapons for Mc's O, including Webb(he just forgot;-) about the blocking necessary to make it work).
I don't think the FO views Spags as HC material, but love him as DC.
You guys are delusional
ThatLimerickGuy : 9/19/2017 6:30 pm : link
You dont fire a HC coming off of a rookie 11-5 season even if the Giants would have lost the 2 combined games 120-0.

Sometimes I truly believe that some of you think this is Madden or something.

I am not even a big McAdoo fan but this is just dumb to even discuss.
If Ben is tossed (and I don't see that happening)
Blue21 : 9/19/2017 6:32 pm : link
then Spags will be the next head coach.

He's not getting fired. Having said that I don't buy into this great "he rose the team to 11-5" mantra I keep reading. He took over a 500 team, and then got to add $200M to the defense. The team that went 11-5 was not the same team as Coughlins last. Also the offense has continually declined since Coughlin left.
It's the slicked back hair.....
Fishmanjim57 : 9/19/2017 7:05 pm : link
Time for McAdon't to show up scruffy like he did last season.
As for Spag's getting the bump? I don't think so. I'd rather bring in another completely different coach for next season, as well as the entire staff....including a NEW GM! FIRE REESE NOW!

Again, I am not even that pro-Mac but you can't dismiss an 11-5 season from a HC.
I think Mac could be a decent HC, team leader...
Vinny from Danbury : 9/19/2017 8:35 pm : link
but he needs to give up his OC responsibilities as soon as possible. He seems to be a terrible OC, and play caller. Not that I think Sully is the answer, but I don't see where he could be worse than Mac has been since he took over HC duties last year.
practicality is an HC quality
idiotsavant : 9/19/2017 8:43 pm : link
guys like Belicheck and Parcels struck me as people who, if their wives didn't like how you do something, you change it, guys who realize when its a clogged fuel filter instead of a bad carburetor, even though they might be 'trained as carburetor guys.'

Interesting experiment will be to see if Macadoo and or Sully can change their stripes this season.

If not, Spags seems fairly practical.
this thought crossed my mind several times this afternoon
mdc1 : 9/19/2017 8:51 pm : link
we win 3-4 games this season, McAdoo gone, Eli to Jacksonville, Spags new HC, we draft a new franchise QB and life, use our money to hire a real oline.

Spags is not a good head coach

He needs to whip out his oversized suit from 2014 - which coincidentally, is the last time our offense crossed the 50 yard line. True story.

To be fair, when the offense has been on the field the last couple of games, it has reminded me of old-school Madden games when I'd be on D playing as LT and co.
