NFT: Electrical Linemen question

TampaGMan : 9/19/2017 6:23 pm
Just curious if there are any linemen on here that could explain something to me. I live in Tampa and when I returned from evacuating, we had power. The same day, we started noticing issues with some of the plugs and lights. Then we noticed all of the 220 volt electrical was not working. I called an electrician who said one of the legs coming into the house was dead and he called in a work order to TECO and said he thought it was the meter. This was We'd. Finally had full power restored Sun morning. TECO said that the had to replace the "crab in the handhold". I received this info 2nd hand but I was wondering if someone knew and could explain what this is.

Crab in hand hole.
Not an electrical lineman

But a crab is a crab joint - an electrical line connector. And he probably was saying manhole, not hand hole.
You have two "legs" coming into your house,

110 volts each. They connect to your panel, usually running one on each side. Combined together, they will power your 220V items like your dryer, range, or water heater. If one leg is out, usually due to a loose bug (or crab) at the pole, in the meter pan, or in the street, anything circuit on that leg will be dead, as well as anything that requires both.

Pretty standard, pretty common.

Believe Jim has this correct. Man Hole, not hand hole...and then that makes sense.
Thanks
