Jon Gruden

Stan in LA : 9/19/2017 7:15 pm
What a difference a year makes. He actually was quite good last night. Not afraid to criticize when warranted, praise when deserved. Now if only Tony Romo, AKA: Mr. "everybody's good/great" can learn that lesson sooner rather than later I might turn on the sound again.
It takes a lot to get Gruden to be critical

The Giants' OL did the trick.
Everyone has their limits.

Frankly, I've always found him fun, and sometimes, even insightful.
He puts on the rose-colored glasses awfully quick but
mattlawson : 9/19/2017 8:04 pm : link
He also complained about the referees, the poor line play, the quality of the product on the field, and again the calls on the field.
Uh, Romo has been great in the booth.

And unlike Gruden, I don't think he's angling to get back into the league soon.
I wouldn't mind Gruden as coach

at all. He's certainly got the experience, and IMO wouldn't be as pig-headed as McAdon't.

1st week Rome was listenable, this week I had to turn off the sound. Every play was 'great' every player was 'great' every call was 'great'. OMG. He made me call for the return of Simms.

Don't bother. This is exactly what this troll wanted out of this thread.
can't stand McDermott.

His voice is numbing. How did he get such a big job?
If Gruden wanted to get back into coaching
Modus Operandi : 9/19/2017 10:48 pm : link
There would be several teams lining up to hire him tomorrow. He's attached to job openings every off season and yet he's back in the booth. Why would he want to coach?

Completely agree. He should be commentating for spelling bees.

I thought I was the only guy left who still liked Gruden.
I thought he was awful

and the entire ESPN production more generally. McDermott repeatedly claimed Apple was only getting snaps due to Jenkins' injury. They often showed aerial/sideline shots and other garbage as the teams were getting to the LOS only to have to quickly cut to the action as the ball was being shot. Did an awful job showing replays of key plays (e.g. didn't even mention why Engram received the flag). Had no idea why the KO was being marked at the 45 after it went out.

And Gerry Austin is awful. Basically just gives his quick opinion on questionable calls without going into a detailed explanation. Literally no value.

As for the game itself, they really need to speed things up, particularly stoppages for penalties/reviews. How do the refs not know where to spot the ball after a KO OOB?
I agree about his voice, but his name is...
Pete in CO : 9/20/2017 9:33 am : link
Sean McDonough. His father was Will McDonough, and worked for NBC for years. If Gruden was looking to get back into football, he's taking his own time waiting for the right job. An analyst's gig is seemingly much less stressful than that of an NFL HC...

Agree - can't stand the ESPN production and the announce team. McDonough is not a #1 NFL play-by-play guy - better as a college broadcaster. Gruden is much better on his radio appearances when he's dialed down.
He is very critical if you listen closely...
EricJ : 9/20/2017 9:46 am : link
he will not come right out and say it. Here is an example...

"I am surprised that the Giants did not pass in that situation"

"Eli is going to need more time to throw if this offense is going to be effective"

"I guess Ben McAdoo did not think he had enough time to move the ball into FG range right before the half"

He was better
JonC : 9/20/2017 10:11 am : link
but I can't stand him in the booth, he and the zombie next to him are absolutely brutal.
