The actual start of the lines problems began when Justin Pugh was placed at RT. I'm no fan of Pugh, he is a finesse player, which I don't like up front. Be that as it may, it is much easier to make that switch if you are a power player. He succeeded in college, with those short arms though, because of,as Mike Mayock said (insert lisp here) "angles". I can clearly remember at a game I attended, watching him working on his technique on the sideline in what became a fruitless effort to get competent at the position. Instead of giving him a chance at LT, the Giants take a finesse player and make him a Guard. Sure a Guard needs to pull, but he just isn't big and strong enough for the position. That was a Coughlin move, and a dumb one. That disaster of course is what made us have to reach for Ereck Flowers. It was obvious from watching tape that Flowers was not a good pass protector. He is just uncoordinated. Players do get better, but projections are supposed to be left for the later rounds, not the top 10. But a solution seemed obvious. According to Reese and Coughlin he was the strongest player in the draft. He is, as Coughlin said, an "aircraft carrier". So why in hell can't BM see that he is a prototype guard. None of this means that Pugh is going to be good at LT, and Flowers will be a good guard. What it does mean, is that the Giants lack of creative thinking didn't explore these possibilities, and now, along with subpar play from the others, we are left with a catastrophic situation on the line. If BM thinks that Flowers is going to improve at the position he is going to be fired after the season because I doubt we win one game. It's that bad.
^^^this. And the sky is falling just so you know
As for Pugh, I would much rather have a T Rex who at least can move and engage pass rushers. He does get pushed back, but at least he is between the pass rusher and the QB. Flowers is changing the pass rusher as he kills Eli.
No time to criticize the best O lineman on the team. Be glad he's there. Sorry he's not a mauler, but he is an NFL player, and they will resign him at a price you will think ridiculous, but you have to pay for what you need. Giants can't turn their noses up and say he, or any other FA O lineman who can help this team, is overpriced. The got the skill players, now it's time to pony up for O linemen.
Part of the issue is that we did not have the talented depth behind our starters and didn't plan well post Snee, Seubert, O'Hara, McKenzie and Diehl.
The CBA and the college game makes it harder to build an oline through the draft.
I wonder if Dave Gettleman leaving had an effect as well. Gettleman does value the trenches.
Also, he did the same thing with the tight end position until recently. And the maddening thing about how he has constructed this team, and don't get me wrong I love what he did on defense, he neglected the offense and did nothing to retool the protections needed around Eli to allow him to run the offense effectively.
This team right now is playing with one hand behind its back because Jerry Reese has built a team that has no balance. It's pretty much all on the defense. This offense shows no ability to produce more then one drive a game if that. And if they get behind do not have the ability of fight to come back at this point. Defenses have no fear in attacking this offense even when Beckham is on the field.
So you have a really good defense that has shown some warts early on and an offense that can't help them out at all. We can salivate all we want about how good this defense can be but when you one the most incompetent offenses the Giants have had in many moons, along with an unimaginative head coach who appears to be in over his head, you aren't going to win many games.

Exactly. Imagine how good this defense could be if they could play with a lead and rest on the side line with and offense that could sustain drives.
Bargain bin shopping and misses did the same thing to the LB core. Sure once in a while you find a gem like Blackburn but you need to hit on your draft picks. Sintim, Wilkerson were high picks that didn't pan out and kept NYG looking for talent in FA and they didn't do great there, except Boley who was decent.
The OL is a disaster because of the mindset that Reese has in regards to asset allocation from the salary cap. He puts value in theses positions: QB, DE, CB, WR and OT, specially LT. He invested a high pick in Flowers and has missed badly. The best way to fix it is to move him to guard, Right Guard specially. He is a strong man and can move people so put him in a position to succeed.

Not only did Reese draft poorly on the offensive line but he only drafted out of a last ditch effort because he did such a poor job transitioning after the 2011 Super Bowl. He thought he could get waiver wire talent and low draft picks ala Dave Diehl, his type don't come along all that often, and took for granted the coaches could turn chicken shit into chicken salad.

The maddening part about all this is the HC stubbornly refuses to change any part of the O-line unless due to injury. While continuity and sticking to it is great, it's not so good when your week in week out performance is abysmal beyond belief.

I don't think I have heard anyone say it better, in so few words...
