Not ready to throw the season away yet but I think if we get to 2-4 with the schedule we have, we may have to consider this ... trade DRC for a draft pick. I think there is logic to it.
- He's an aging veteran with a high contract but really not that high for a high performing starting corner.
- He could be the piece that puts a contending team over the top.
- With our holes on the OL, I'm not sure he is a luxury that we can afford.
- We have a starting nickel caliber cornerback in Cockrell. Whether Apple steps up and lives up to his draft slotting remains to be seen.
Again, I hope this season doesn't come down to this but say we can get a #3 for him. We go into the draft with a fairly high slot for our picks and we have an extra #3 and #4 hopefully for Hankins.
We go OL with 1 of the top 2 picks bring in a free agent or 2 and then we can still load up with another 2 more during rounds 3 and 4 without dedicating our whole draft to OL. I envision at most 2 starters coming back. Really hope Wheeler or Bisnowaty can challenge for a spot but I have my doubts that Jones is an NFL player and Fluker if he can't start this year also needs to go.
Round 1 - we trade away a defensive player who's integral to the defense, on the field most downs, isn't paid very much, and is liked in the locker room.
Random team - 'we'd like you to trade us DRC'
'Yeah, but what do I get?'
'I'll give you a 3rd round pick'
If I take that trade, I've taken a guy off the team who's on the field most defensive downs, who is still playing at a high level, who is reasonably paid - in exchange for cap space in the $6-7M range that I don't need right now, and the rights to draft a player after the season, who would be a rookie next season, coming from a round that has what, a 25-30% success rate? And it leaves me with a hole that I can't really address with existing personnel, since we're lucky to be 4 CBs deep and we certainly don't have a 5th.
Why would *ANYONE* do this?
Why would someone do this and hand you Staley or Thomas? Neither of those teams has a budding young OLT being shielded by the existence of the older veteran. Even if they're not competing, they don't want their QBs dead, not to mention at least have to feign putting out a competitive product since they need to sell tickets.
This is the NFL - there's a handful of player trades on a yearly basis, and they're usually not very good. Stop dreaming, the solution isn't coming via that route.
So trading draft picks, unless the Giants front office and coaches really believe they are that one player away to turn this around this year, is out.
Trading a DRC or other assets, I don't see it either because the Giants won't look to tank this season. The back half of their schedule is heavy with home games, and all against the NFC East. They will be in position to make up ground even with this slow start. And this is a team that celebrates championships with a 10-6 and 9-7 record. I don't see anyone in this division winning more than 10 games this year. There won't be a Dallas run away again. So Giants just need to be in striking distance of 9 or 10 wins and they could still win this division.
My bet is the Giants leave this alone and let the season play out and go after a QB in the first round next year, and focus the remainder of the draft and free agency on OL.
Everyone also knows he works hard in the classroom, so his work ethic is not questioned. He also has no character issues.
Webb is an unknown. That won't change by the end of the year in all likelihood.
Don't be surprised if he doesn't play this week, or misses some time the rest of the season.....
I don't think you would get much for him, but then you have to replace him......Did you see Cockrell on that run play? If he is out there, I would be throwing in his direction....
