UKGiantsfan with a view on OL

Thinks our brst OL solution this year is to put Wheeler at LT. Not a suggestion I gave read before.
Wheeler at LT - ( New Window )
Question is...
njm : 9/20/2017 8:41 am : link
will Wheeler be as vulnerable to the bull rush as Flowers is to the speed rush? This would have a better shot of working next year.
That lack of strength seems to be underplayed a bit
jcn56 : 9/20/2017 8:44 am : link
It's not a trivial issue - even if his technique/footwork are perfect, if he's lacking the strength to stand up at LT the results won't be pretty.

Might be the best option though - I don't like the idea of moving Pugh to LT either. I thought Jones was adequate at LG, leave Pugh at RT, and give Wheeler a shot. All of this assumes that Fluker is still on the bench due to injury.
Wheeler almost went in for Flowers?

It was reported that after the second Flowers' meltdown, Solari had Wheeler get his helmet on and was instructing him. So that tells me the Giants almost pulled the trigger last night and inserted Chad into the starting lineup.

Was this mentioned somewhere?
I didn't see that bit anywhere
jcn56 : 9/20/2017 8:49 am : link
but I read all the pressers and didn't see it mentioned, so they probably went off someone who saw this from the stands and assumed it was related to a benching, when it could as easily have been a precautionary measure in case they needed to shuffle the line around a bit more due to injury.
Yea awesome idea!

Never heard that one before. That's idiotic to put a rookie free agent who's weak at left tackle. Everyone knows he needs time in the weight room. He likes serviceable against 3s and 4s. The only legit solution we have imo is keep flowers at tackle. Keep Pugh at left guard. Richburg at center. Fluker at guard or tackle and hart at guard or tackle. To start shuffling guys I. And put is ridiculous. It's a terrible thing when the team have more faith in Brett jones at guard then fluker. Just scary.
Look I love Wheeler

and he may well be a Left Tackle. But Sy and I spoke directly to him aftrr his first shot at first string LT. He's a work in progress.
We need to really think about why we would want Wheeler to start.
Brown Recluse : 9/20/2017 8:59 am : link
Are we just looking for a fresh body, for the sake of change, or do we really feel he would be an improvement over Flowers.

I don't know if he would be an immediate improvement, but Flowers is so bad that I wonder how much worse Wheeler would be in his place. Technique can sometimes compensate for lack of physical strength.

Most seem to forget,
Doomster : 9/20/2017 9:01 am : link
That Wheeler played against basically 2nd and third stringers....so throwing him in there against savvy vets, may produce the same results as with Flowers.....

But somewhere along the line, you have to replace Flowers, if he continues to struggle..........is Pugh the better option over Wheeler on Eli's blind side? But that means someone has to replace Pugh at RT, if Jones is at LG.....

If you throw Wheeler out there, you basically have to have Ellison at his hip for a chip block.....but if that protects Eli's blind side, so be it.....

I didn't read about a Flowers meltdown anywhere, but when watching the game I did see something where Flowers seemed to get into it a bit with other lineman in the huddle.

I don't recall the exact time in the game but ESPN just came back from commercial and had the view from the end zone, behind the Giants standing around in the huddle waiting for play to resume. You can see Flowers hopping up and down and moving closer to Richburg, then Richburg waving his arm like he's talking in an animated fashion. Jerry then steps in and pushes Flowers back to his side of the huddle. If anyone still has the game recorded take a look back and see if you can find it.

I'm not sure if that's the "meltdown" mentioned above but from my eyes it did seem like something, though could have been just heat of the moment stuff.
The

fact that a UDFA rookie may be our best option at LT just proves the OL situation is really bad.

I'm very reluctant to put Wheeler at LT. As others have said, he looked good in preseason against 3s and 4s. Totally different now. I can't believe the Giants would do so, instead of shifting Pugh back to LT.
Down the road
Biteymax22 : 9/20/2017 9:24 am : link
there is a chance he develops and winds up starting for this team. Reality is it probably won't be this year, but maybe we'll get lucky and I'll (and most everyone else) be wrong about this and he'll develop faster and take over in the middle of the year. Probably won't happen.

Remember, the coaches watch these guys practice everyday and obviously are able to say definitively that Flowers is a better player... If not Wheeler would be starting.

Agree, he's not ready now, but he may be the answer long term.

Its also idiotic to leave Flowers out there to get beaten by like a drum whenever the D needs pressure. The offense will never get going. Something has to change.
On the one hand, I don't think he's ready yet.
Ira : 9/20/2017 9:41 am : link
But if Flowers continues to struggle, it might be a good idea to put Wheeler in for a few downs to see how he does.
Coaches evaluations
Painless62 : 9/20/2017 9:54 am : link
Sad to say, but there are many times coaches favor drafted players, especially high first rounders, over UDFA's. Perhaps or most likely probably, there is pressure from above. One of the things that made Jimmy Johnson a good coach was his philosophy that the best player played, no matter where or how they got on the team. I'm not saying Chad Wheeler will be better, but at least there would be hope. Keeping everyone in the same spot, what hope is there?
Flowers is so frustrating
Rjanyg : 9/20/2017 11:21 am : link
He is a strong and massive human being with bad technique. Is this all his fault? He didn't draft himself 9th overall. He is still very young and this may be part of the reason Reese hasn't drafted or invested in a 2nd option to the LT position. Signing Wheeler is a cost effective way of adding developmental depth but is it time to turn to a more athletic but weaker LT?

It might be.
Its one thing to cross your fingers and hope for the best

It's another not to have a backup plan .
A portion of us had zero faith in the line watching this team
struggle to score run the ball or go downfield felt that there was no way we were gonna march this same unit back out there . I never liked the hire of Ben and I was biased in having TC remain but I always felt that I would have hired
an ex NFL coached or possibly a College head coach that ran a pro style offense . Well will the wheels come completely off this Sunday or will somehow we shock the world with a win .
If Wheeler isn't capable of filling in, he shouldn't be on the roster.
Ivan15 : 9/20/2017 3:30 pm : link
He certainly shouldn't be active.
Pretty sad that they didn't have someone better, like Haliopo.

Wheeler--Jones--Richburg--Jerry--Pugh from left to right and then use the short passing game to set up the run. If it means a 3-1 pass-to-run ratio so be it.

Milton - you may be on to something. Check out the thread on Jackie Slater's view of Wheeler.
