At all to start the game. Not once, I don't to start every 1st possession with 2nd and 10s. Spread the defense out, all your playmakers on the field and play fast. Don't let them substitute, Chip Flowers' man, then throw it to that man in the flat. Tire the D out. Start running on the second or third possession. I would rather see them throw it deep and get an incompletion than run into the line for nothing.

Keep the safeties honest with Beckham and work the TEs + Vereen in the flats and/or short middle. Mix it up with some max protect.

I agree with this. I am not suggesting abandoning the run the whole game. I feel like every game for the last year or so we come out with the attitude..."WE ARE GOING TO RUN TODAY!!" We get stuffed, it fires the other team up and we faced with multiple second and long and 3rd and longs on our first few drives. These drives eventually stall and we end up playing from behind again.... We should know by now we lack the physicality to run at the start. I would love to play a game with a lead. Our defense is designed for it.
Vereen should be starting and get most of the snaps. Vereen is a better pass blocker and he is available for dump offs.
If Shane Smith can pass block, Iwould consider putting him in the backfield with Vereen on pass plays. He can block and vereen can slip out for a dump off.
