NFT: Perspective

Capt. : 9/20/2017 9:38 am
I watched the game Monday from a motel in Sebring FL while on my way back to Key West. I evacuated a week ago Saturday at 1 am. Originally I intended to ride the storm out in a big hotel but after seeing Irma slide west toward Key West I figured my house and boat were gone, I might as well save my truck. I drove home through the keys yesterday looking at the devastation in the middle keys. Marathon, Big Pine and Summerland Keys got crushed! I have a friend in Summerland, he got wiped out. 5 ft of water through his house, boat sank and truck damaged. I got home midday and other than leaves and branches and a couple old fences at some rental properties, I had no damage. I am amazed. Eye passed about 30 miles east of KW so we were on the "better" side of the storm. Just 30 miles made the difference between losing it all or being OK. When I left I believed the life I've spent the last 36 years building was going to be wiped away in the blink of an eye. Yes I have insurance, but at almost 61 yrs old, I don't know if I'd have it in me to start over. I still have some straightening up to do, but I have power, water, TV and obviously, internet. I've always appreciated how lucky I've been to live in Key west, let alone to be able to make a living in taking people fishing. How tremendously fortunate I am to have survived this storm at all, let alone with virtually no damage is not lost on me. I want the Giants to win, I hope they have a good season, but whether they win or lose, life must go on. As a fan, it's just a game.
Always be thankful for what you have. I know I am
Just thought I'd throw that out there
My in-laws place on Matlacha was spared as well.

They were looking at a 10 foot storm surge in the hours before it reached them.
Good to hear

thanks for the thoughtful post - a good reminder about what's important.

Glad to hear you are well. Sorry for your friends and those affected. Prayers for those in the path of Maria.
Glad to hear you made out relatively well, Capt.

I do think people need a bit of perspective and I think your post will help.

The Giants don't depress me on a full time basis, but football is an escape I look forward to all year (much like fishing), and when it's bad, it sucks to have that escape lost. Pales in comparison to life's real problems, though.

I wish that region's people nothing but the best in their rebuild. Having spent some time down there, knowing those locals, I don't doubt for a second they're up to rebuilding bigger and better than where they started.

I used to spend some time down on Marathon

because some of my relatives used to winter down there. There was this awesome bar, the Sunset Grill, with a pool in the middle of it. I loved that place. I'm sure it was probably decimated by the storm surge.
Glad

Glad things worked out for you! 2 questions

How did Duck Key look when you went by and how did your boat make out?

Could not see duck Key very well.

I was paying attention to traffic in front of me. It appeared the worst damage was further south. Wish I could tell you more.
Boat made it great. Thankfully. Should be fishing by next week. Probably go even if there are no customers. Just need a break

Craig lost a lot of trees and didn't get power until yesterday. I think he did well other wise. He lives up the keys a little, but his house is block and elevated. His boat made it fine also

Thanks

I know where he lives. I knew a few miles up could make a difference.

Glad you 2 made it through in fairly good shape.
