Pugh Defends Flowers,

clatterbuck : 9/20/2017 12:44 pm
Pugh statement (247Sports) defends Ereck Flowers, says fan and media pressure may be affecting his confidence; he's only 23 years old; left tackle is really hard, and it's the entire line, not just Flowers that needs to play better.

It's fine that Pugh is coming to the defense of a teammate. It would have been better had Pugh, or any other Giant on the field, come to Manning's defense after he was viciously face-planted by a Lions DE on a hit that could have broken his neck. The hit should have been flagged for unecessary roughness. The refs didn't protect Manning and neither did his teammates -- before or after the play. Btw, Eli completed a pass to Shephard on the play.

the guy never gets a roughing call, do you think there is any way Brady or Rodgers doesn't get a roughing call on that play?

It's only been two weeks against two good teams - do you think the team is that fragile?
if the problem
japanhead : 9/20/2017 12:51 pm : link
is really fan and media criticism affecting flowers' confidence and that is the proximate cause of his poor play, its an alarming indictment of his mental toughness and he's probably not cut out for the NFL anyway. and this BS about him being only 23 years old- spare me.. he declared for the draft and left college early.. he shouldn't have done that if he was too mentally fragile to handle it. come on now.

A lot of the issues on offense have been ongoing since the beginning of 2015, and certainly since BM took over as HC. Not too many of the players involved have changed.
I would agree

It's not just Flowers. The mighty midgets in the middle of the line share some of the blame being Jones Pugh and Richburg. Yes I know Pugh played RT but was the starting LG. I would go two TE and play Shepherd and Marshall less.

Fair point. Thanks.

According to some of the 2007 players that were there on Monday, the OL didn't even bother to help Eli up most of the game.

You think they're going to give a shit about going after that DE if they cared that little in the first place?

Compare that to what TJ Lang did earlier in the game when Stafford was hit on a slide. But there were options to improve the line this offseason right....

This line is not only bad, it's soft. It's one thing to have guys who are tough but struggle with technique and speed rushers. These guys are just bad. Get zero push off the snap and have zero toughness. Pathetic they brought back this unit.

What did Pugh think this was going to accomplish?
robbieballs2003 : 9/20/2017 2:10 pm : link
All it does is make him look even worse. If Flowers at any point in his career show to be a worthwhile tackle then maybe some of us could buy into this garbage. But, he has never been good. People gave him the benefit of the doubt because he played on a bum ankle. We respect that but that doesn't mean his play was good. Most gave him the benefit of the doubt and said he will improve. He hasn't.

Pugh also looks like a moron if he thinks Flowers is playing well or has played well. Just because the whole line hasn't played well doesn't mean the criticism of Flowers isn't justified. If Pugh wants to step up and talk about how he can improve and how he messed up that is perfectly fine. I get supporting your teammate and standing up for him but to put down the media and fans in the same breath is just asinine.
All this does is lend credence to the idea that Flowers is soft
shockeyisthebest8056 : 9/20/2017 2:17 pm : link
mentally and that's why the coach and GM go out of their way to NEVER criticize him publicly. I'd tell Justin that Flowers is playing like dogshit to the point he's putting his quarterback's health at risk. Can't get mad at people for calling a spade a spade and it makes no sense to pretend that he's been better than the prevailing belief says.

No. Richie was the "Big" bully and Jerry only piggy-backed on Richie's comments to Jonathan Martin. We were too classy of an organization to consider a "Big" bully on the OL, but Jerry? Shoot, hand that man another contract.

That is incorrect...
Isn't it funny
David B. : 9/20/2017 5:15 pm : link
that Flowers and Solari never do interviews during the shit storm. I can almost understand Flowers -- given the shoving incident with Raaaaaaanaaaaaaaaan. But as most of the other coaches chimed it after the loss(es), where is the OL coach? Just to tell us that "it's not one guy" and that "it's all correctable."?
It's all on Reese
GeorgeAdams33 : 9/20/2017 5:59 pm : link
He overdrafted these guys and signed others in total desperation. If Reese would've kept the offensive line stocked with even decent talent Coughlin and Gilbride would still be here going for their third ring with Eli; if they hadn't attained it already.

Reese needs to go for being horrible at finding offensive linemen, linebackers, tight ends, safeties, etc... Give the GM job to Falcon's assistant General Manager, Scott Pioli and make Dave Gettleman the Pro Personnel Director.

Say goodbye to Reese, Abrams, Ross, etc..

The words by Pugh
RetroJint : 9/20/2017 6:10 pm : link
are inappropriate ? For chrissakes he is trying to help save a career. The Giants have a statue for a quarterback. Therefore there are always going to be pressures and nary a clean pocket as McAdoo mentioned in the most telling statement during the entire off-season. If they want to continue with Flowers, they will have to help him. It's as simple as that. The guy is not good enough.

Exactly. 100% agree. Pugh just gets a pass because he's the shiniest turd in the port-a-potty of an OL. Doesn't means he's anything more than a JAG.
Pugh is the leader on the OL and a very good player
PatersonPlank : 9/20/2017 7:22 pm : link
He has played LG, LT, and RT for us, and done all better than anyone else we had. I don't know why he gets bashed on BBI.

If anyone was going to speak about to defend Flowers (if he indeed should be defended) its Pugh.

though i am trying hard to like richburg. the knock on pugh is that he's concussion-prone and is pretty much a lock to miss a handful of games each year. i understand him sticking up for flowers, i'm just saying it makes flowers sounds like he's mentally weak

I hate to be fair to the refs, because they hardly deserve it, but they did let the late Kennard hit go and if they were really chippy could have called Munson for jumping on the sliding Stafford...so I'll give them a pass just this once...for consistency only, not for their interpretation of the rules.

Quick question: I was told at a young age the phrase " Call a spade a spade" is a racial slur as term spade referred to a African American. Definitely not calling you out, just curious.
To be fair
eclipz928 : 9/21/2017 9:00 am : link
Players that play the QB position are accustomed to receiving blame when the offense or the team are playing poorly. It may be a bit unprecedented where the guy playing LT is getting the blame for the entire team's failures. I doubt that there are many non-QBs that would be able to handle that kind of pressure.

That's my point. Leadership would have been getting in the face of the opposing player who roughed up your QB.
