NFT: Yankees vs. Twins - Wednesday Matinee - Severino

adamg : 9/20/2017 12:50 pm

Let's get this sweep!
Fangraphs on Severino
Greg from LI : 9/20/2017 12:59 pm : link
Nice little piece, although honestly I don't think there's much separation between Severino and Sale at this point. Kluber is the clear choice for the Cy in my eyes.

Severino: 184.1 IP, 141 H, 218K/49BB, 2.93 ERA, 1.031 WHIP, 156 ERA+
Sale: 201.1 IP, 153 H, 287K/41BB, 2.86 ERA, .964 WHIP, 158 ERA+

I guess Joe is really going for it.
Severino is absolutely a revelation this year
adamg : 9/20/2017 1:04 pm : link
Hard to believe how he turned it all the way around.
Hard to believe
dune69 : 9/20/2017 1:05 pm : link
Big Sexy is still pitching. He has had a good career and made some nice money.
FYI Joe explained that moving Sevi to today
Stu11 : 9/20/2017 1:08 pm : link
was a little tweak so that if need be he'd be on schedule to pitch the last game of the regular season, in case anyone was wondering. Don't think it will come anywhere near down to that. I like pitching him today and playing an A lineup. Lets put our foot down on their throats and basically clinch home field for the WC.

It's always impressive when a power pitcher manages to adapt to a diminished fastball and succeed. It took him a few years to figure it out (and to stay healthy enough to be productive), but CC did it.
Got some fortune with a throw out going unchallenged
adamg : 9/20/2017 1:18 pm : link
But Sevy makes it through a scoreless 1
Wow
blueblood'11 : 9/20/2017 1:19 pm : link

Sucks when

and a coincidence, but this is the 2nd time in 4 days Joe flipped around one of his top guys a day before (Gray on Sunday) and they had their worst start in awhile.
Great slide by Bird

Lead off double is nice right now
For what it's worth
blueblood'11 : 9/20/2017 2:18 pm : link
Sect seems to be pitching differently today and I don't know if it's by design. He's less aggressive with his fast ball and seems to throwing more breaking balls. It's like she's pitching reverse of how he normally pitches. If they do play the Twins in the wild card Sevy may be setting them up.
OMG

I don't think today's performance is a coincidence (I sort of expected it based on what you said), but Sevy has battled through starts like this before several times this year and given the team a chance to win. Those games were almost as impressive as the flat out dominant starts.

Whew, glad he's not hurt. Thought that's what it was. 45 pitch 3rd? Wow. Wonder if has to do with Joe moving him since Tanaka was supposed to pitch today.
Sevy was pitching on 5 days' rest, which is

WGAF about that? If these out of town announcers aren't complaining about something when it comes to the Yankees/NY, then they probably aren't talking. Let's see the list of regular complaints...

- payroll
- band box
- steroids (that was an old one)
- someone being overrated because he's in NY

Judge, Sanchez, and Bird all with HRs today.

Gardner's starting to get hot again, too
Greg from LI : 9/20/2017 2:53 pm : link
He had been in a bit of a rut in August through the beginning of September - not really struggling, but kind of drifting along hitting around .250-260 with little power, but went .358/.404/.453 over the past two weeks and now 2-3 today.
Sanchez with another RBI.

88 on year for him even with missing a month.

9-3 Yanks!

Didi has now hit more HRs at SS for the Yanks than any SS in history.
See, now this is a lot of fun

best young hitting prospect, Cashman said Bird as well. They clearly think very highly of him. He just needs to stay off the DL.

If you have this taped, watch how much Bird does with his legs and hips.

Quote:
Judge is far from a finished product.
manh george : 2:34 am : link : reply
I start with the premise that a 6'7" 280 pound 24-year-old baseball player is NEVER a finished product. Oversized athletes simply take longer to peak. And then, I consider that his swing isn't a mature one, despite the home run output. A mature swing includes at least some use of the lower half.

I also have strong hopes that, over time, he will learn to use his lower half. A swing that includes the legs and hips stays in the hitting zone longer, keeps the bat in contact with the ball longer, has more time to put the bat in motion, has better plate coverage, and has less tendency to pull off the ball. All of that also means less tendency to swing at pitches well out of the strike zone.

Will he ever have a Greg Bird swing? Highly unlikely. But over the next couple of years, I expect that he will develop a much more mature swing--he's a smart kid, who wants to learn. And, I am confident that he knows that getting the lower half into the swing will make him a better hitter overall. If that happens, the outcome could be really amazing. No reason to think of him as a .280 hitter when he really matures. I expect that even by next season, he will come back with improved technique.

By the way, he has been quoted saying that Greg Bird is the best hitter on the team. So, he knows what swing he wants to emulate in terms of technique.

If he is staying inside the ball better, then he is starting to use his lower half better. He HAS been watching Bird, as he has indicated. I am in awe of what Judge will become... and what the young power talent all over this franchise could become.

Btw, I watched Sanchez closely today on his homer, and Didi on his. Both of them get huge amounts of momentum from their lower half. When they make contact, their belt buckle is facing the pitcher. Difference is that Sanchez is also spectacularly strong, while Didi is just a really superior athlete, so he turns on the ball very quickly without losing his rhythm/grace.

World class athletes every one. Pretty amazing.
ooooh, bases loaded for Judge
Greg from LI : 9/20/2017 3:25 pm : link
Give us a show, big fella
Judge is barreeling more balls again, hitting HRs,
yatqb : 9/20/2017 3:29 pm : link
getting sac flies when needed. Heck, he just missed two HRs yesterday.

these very, very, very bad teams the sox are facing lately are killing us. we're about to win our 15th game in 18 games, but i think only move up like 2 games? insane. especially with all the leads in the 9th boston keeps overcoming somehow and all of their extra inning wins :-). but really, the sox are not that great - very average starting pitching outside of sale, and only real bullpen threat is kimbrall? outside of that, very, very hittable :-). I see them getting eliminated in the first rd again, or even the wc game if they drop down hopefully :-)
We HAVE to get through that Wild Card Game.

All guns are set by MLB this year. So for whatever reason the guns are all tuned the same way. Take it for what it is worth.

Probably doesn't matter, if the Twins miss out then the other WC team is likely.....oh for crying out loud, it's the goddamned Angels. God himself could come down from the heavens and reveal the mysteries of the universe to me, and I still wouldn't know why the Yankees eternally struggle against that goddamned franchise.
