Coaching/scheme has to be a huge part of it.
He is not a good lineman but he's better than most of what we have here.
And yes, a lot of it is coaching. Our head coach runs a broken system and our offensive line coach is hopeless, hapless, and helpless.
Is Gabe Jackson that much to write home about? Now Rodney Hudson at Center and Osemele at LG is an awesome combination - and Penn can still hold his own at LT.

Say what you want about the Jets, but they do have Leonard Williams and Mo Wilkerson on their line. Granted, Newhouse wasn't going against one of them on every play, but the Jets D-line is their strength

Oh absolutely - definitely takes some of the spotlight of him, for sure - but you could also argue that with the rest of the unit being so strong that opposing defenses would throw everything they had at Newhouse if he was really that much of a weak link

That still makes a huge difference as the RBs/TEs can chip to help Newhouse (not sure if that's the case or not). Here, both OTs suck and Jerry wouldn't recognize a stunt if it slapped him in the face. Also, the ability to run keeps you ahead of the sticks and minimizes 2nd/3rd and longs which is when most sacks occur.
With a 2 game sample size, competition and score also matter. Giants have been trailing both games which makes it much easier for Ds to ignore the run and get after the QB. Also constantly in 3rd and long situations.

Granted it was pre-season, but didn't the Giants OL handle those 2 pretty well too? And they also had Richardson still.
And he hasn't. That is as black and white as it gets.
I think overall PFF is pretty accurate.. some times they are off.. but even his coach has been praising his performance.. I think it may be as simple as its only 2 games.. small sample size are not conclusive.. wait for 8-10 games and then we can judge..
I think it still helps. The line is a unit...and having a beast like that on the line impacts the way the whole thing operates as well as how opponents play you.
But hey, we can't overpay for a guard.

Newhouse is a warm body NFL reserve linemen, and as the season progresses, teams will scheme to go after him.
His saving grace is Carr's mobility, and the overall strength of that line.
It might be that he felt liberated playing for a team that didn't have a fan that whined about every draft pick every year.
but playing next to him was more garbage
now he has a competent guy next to him, he is less garbage
give Defenses time , they'll find marshall again
p.s.--For the record, I wanted the Giants to re-sign him to a "6th man" contract similar to the one he signed with the Raiders and let Jerry go in free agency. That was part of my plan for 2017 free agency which also included signing Kevin Zeitler and Jack Doyle. And in the draft I wanted Cam Robinson. Not saying this would've been a smarter path than the one the Giants chose, I'm just saying this is what my thinking was for solving the team's OL issues via free agency and the draft.
