I am not advocating getting rid of Eli next year but I am wondering what cap space gets freed up if Eli gets cut or retires after this season. I don't know if Webb is the future but let's just say he gets elevated to QB - 1 next season and Eli is off the books. What kind of numbers will be available to improve this offense? Just spit ballin here.

That's been the case going on a few years now, save for 1-2 guys. But given the fact that our current bunch stinks, we might have to roll the dice on someone.
Especially in light of the fact that one or both of Pugh and Richburg might not be here.
That's a big number.
My guess is if Eli really has intentions of playing another 4-5 years, that will be renegotiated. It's really in his best interest I'd think.
This is only partially correct. The above numbers are correct if Eli is a pre June 1 cut.
However, if the Giants were to designate Eli as a post June 1 cut, the Giants would incur $6.2M in 2018 and $6.2M in 2019 as "dead money." However, the Giants would gain $16M in cap space as of June 1.
While on the surface, that does not appear to help the Giants, it would actually be an immense help to giving OBJ an extension.
The Giants will have some decent cap space after this season- and can make more by dropping Marshall and DRC. Thus, if the Giants were to prioritize OL (more specifically, interior OL), they would have the cap space to do so.
I believe that the Giants run game issues stem almost entirely from an inability to control the middle of the line- Richburg is the real weak link there. A major upgrade at OC is probably going to be necessary.
I also suspect that Flowers is really a RG, not a LT. I don't buy that Pugh is the answer either, but if they brought him back, he would be a LG. I think Wheeler could work at LT- and if the season goes badly, just have him learn on the go this year.
The bottom line, the Giants should prioritize OC, LG (if Pugh does not return) and RT- in that order. They have the cap space to do so if they wish- but dropping Eli post June 1 is probably the only way to extend OBJ next summer if they want to do it next year.
OL improvements is another story though.

after this season, the Giants will have $12.4M in dead money on the books, but an additional $9.8M in cap space. If he plays 2018 and then retires, they'll have $6.2M in dead money with an additional $17M in cap space.

How does the post-6/1 cut designation work with the $5MM roster bonus that Eli would be due on the 3rd day of the league year. I know that teams can now designate that cut in advance, but it seems like a pretty large loophole if a team can get the benefit of counting the cut as though it happened on/after June 1, while also avoiding a roster bonus that would be due prior to June 1.
