I'm tired of all the negative football talk. Are there any songs for you that come to mind, that when you hear the solo, guitar or any other instrument, that for you it is one of the most perfect things you've ever heard?
For me, to immediately come to mind. First- Jimmy Page's solo in Stairway to Heaven. The song may be overplayed but the solo still moves me. Second is Clarence Clemmon's saxophone solo in Jungleland. I could listen to that forever. His solo in Prove it All Night is also up thee for me.
Also - Skynyrd Free Bird I love
Foghat - Slo-Ride solo
And Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
But yeah, Gilmore's Comfortably Numb solo is my fave, especially first solo.
Also - I think virtually ALL of David Gilmour's leads are spot on. I tell anyone who wants to learn lead guitar to do an in-depth study of the lead in "Comfortably Numb" it is perfect.
I'll also throw in a Skunk Baxter in "My Old School".
Roy Buchannon Please don't turn me away
Tina Guo Wonder Woman, Crystalize
The Outlaws Green Grass and high Tides
This
My favorite is Zakk Wylde No More Tears
His solo in Blue Sky, Eat a Peach, and the one he laid down on the live version of Whipping Post, Live at Fillmore East.
But hey, I'm a total Peach Head...
Slash - Breakdown
David Gilmour - Time
Slash - Sweet Child of Mine
Both SRV and Jimi versions of Voodoo Child
Alex Lifeson - La Villa Strangiato
Also - Skynyrd Free Bird I love
Foghat - Slo-Ride solo
Saw him once at some benefit (I'm not sure why I was there, him neither) and got to within 6 inches of his Sax solo. Best R&R moment of my life
Martin Barre was quite the dresser!

bhhaa only to be outdone by Bon Jovi We got the power. the worse commercial in Television history

I actually like the opening solo on "Locomotive Breath" more that that on "Aqualung"
His solo in Blue Sky, Eat a Peach, and the one he laid down on the live version of Whipping Post, Live at Fillmore East.
But hey, I'm a total Peach Head...
I came here to say Blue Sky. Both Duane's and Dickey's.
Also "Europa"
There. Happy now?

Moderately pleased.
yes...
Now that I'm older I still think EVH is immensely skilled though he gets overlooked because there just isn't much depth to Van Halen's music.
So late in life I have grown to admire Stevie Ray Vaughan so much more and would say that Texas Flood is probably the best "guitar solo" or guitar playing by anyone IMO.
Jimi Hendrix would probably be next and it could be any one of four of five different songs.
George Harrison - Something
Eric Clapton - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Danny Cedrone (Bill Haley) - Rock Around the Clock
Felder and Walsh - Hotel California
Brian May - We Will Rock You
Jimmy Page - Stairway to Heaven
Knopfler - Sultans of Swing
Brian Setzer - Rock This Town
Warren DeMartini - Lay It Down
I never knew wtf he was doing until I heard Radiohead interviewed and Thom Yorke said Greenwood hated the song so much he was trying to ruin it.
I think it works. Not something I'd say belongs in this discussion for perfect solo, but an interesting piece of music and story (IMO at least).
THIN LIZZY - Cowboy Song - ( New Window )
Good call! One of the few Mountain songs I really like (and written by Jack Bruce).
Derek Trucks on Midnight in Harlem...tons of live versions.
In this case however I have to give Steve Morse his props.
He does not get enough credit for the stuff he has done with Purple, or even with the Dixie Dregs. He is one amazing guitarist that has played Blackmore's stuff flawlessly over the years and this is one of the best in the entire Purple catalog.

Almost one long solo, so not sure if that qualifies, but I love Buchannon's Sweet Dreams too. So many twists and turns in his playing in one song.

Also, EVH on Beat It is pretty sick.

Gary Richrath
Richrath is often forgotten in these discussions because REO is an under the radar band, but his leads are as memorable as any - the lead in Keep On Lovin' You is also pretty epic - he had killer tone - phenomenal chops - for me, the only reason worth watching REO at all back in the day. Great player - died a couple of years back...
Agreed.
Gary Richrath and Kevin Cronin absolutely crush it.

Voodoo Chile - ( New Window )
Good point I'm surprised no one has mentioned Duane Allman, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour or Mark Knopfler either - no mention of Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen either.

REO wasn't under the radar. They were often boring soft pop rock but they had multiple hits. Two number ones at least.
Buck Dharma on "Burnin for You". That's a fun song.
